A Friendly West Snyder Nestled in the valley between Jacks Mountain and Shade ,Mountain is a small, friendly school, west 'Snyder. Consisting of six-hundred and ten students from grades seven to twelve, West Snyder is located on the outskirts of Bea- ver Springs. The en- tire campus encom- passes only about fif- teen acres of land. Students attending this school come from the three communities of Beavertown, Beaver Springs, and McClure. When the admin- istration was asked what they considered to be the most favor- able feature of the school, they said that the small size of the school encourages friendly and personal relations between stu- dents and teachers. The small size allows for a reasonable stu- dent to teacher ratio so that students whd H606 individual help can acquire it easily. To These We Honor David Shellenberger, as a teacher and a friend, has directed us to many achievements which would not have been possible without his guidance. Because of his unlimited resource- fulness and creativity, we have attained a new outlook on life. The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness. If he is indeed wise he . . . leads you to the threshold of your own mind. THE PROPHET Douglas Lepley, as our advisor, has been our capable guide throughout our years at West Snyder. To him, we attribute the suc- cessful result of our many endeavors. We, the Class of 1973, dedicate our year- book to these two men who have given their time and efforts to make our high school years a lasting memory. New Faces At W. S. WI wonder who we are going to have this year?' Every year in August this question circulates through the Happy Valley SPQPGVTB. To avoid confusion, it should be stated that all the tongue waggling concerns the members of the facung Although school has been in session now for almost a month, some students are still asking questions about the new faces at WSHS. The grapevine has failed to spread the info, so this paper is going to pick the slack in the Mrs. Dorothy is not really new to West Snyder. Six years ago Mrs. Bingman left her commercial classroom here to work in the elementary schools. A graduate of Upper Darby High School and Susquehanna University, she now lives in Beaver Springs. Commenting oi the school, she says she is 'glad to be back to the high school after being SWB? for six years. Beware!! There is a Mlngo living in Room '51 The Chief Logan and Indiana University of Pa, graduate in Miss Diane Marker who teaches French. Miss Marker now lives in Glenwood, outside of Lewistown, to be cont. next CO1- L rieu 1U one month. She finds the 'Students and teachers very co- operat1ve.' The chemistry de- partment has a 'Flying Dutchman' this year. The lebanon Valley graduate is Mr. David Stull. A Sellnsgrove native who now lives ln his hometown, he says that he 'likes the size' of WSHS. In addition to his chem- istry dut1es,Mr. Stull teaches freshman science. Hailing from Mc- Alisterville, Miss Nancy Warner comes to WSHS from East Juniata High School and Shipp- ensburg State College. She has found her spot in the commercial de- partment. Miss Varner out that West 'is a very nice fied is a former Peace Corps member from Mifflintown. A grad- uate of Juniata High School and Shlppens- burg State Co1lege,Mr. Roger Whitesel teaches 7th grade science and senior high math. He served two years as a teacher in the Peace Corps in Ghana, West Africa. He observes that 'the people and students seem very nice, but it is a very crowded s1tuat1on.' to be cont. next col. the West'Snyder facul- ty is our German teacher, Mr. Frank Sohatko, H9 llVed ln Austria as a boy but attended high school and college in the United States. School Board At their monthly 'meetings, the Midd- West School Board mem- bers discuss and plan the future educational facilities which will best fulfill the edu- cational needs of our communities. The major issue this year is an educa- tional assessment pro- gram whereby our school programs and buildings are being examined by an outside firm which will evalu- ate our current school problems. Several answers have been proposed for solving the problem of classroom space, One solution is to add more classrooms on to our present buildings. Another solution favors construction of new buildings and re- shuffling of the grades in these build- ings. Such a rear- rangement of grades could be the placement of kindergarten through fourth, fifth through eighth, and ninth through twelfth in separate buildings. Whatever change will evolve, it will affect the futures of all students. The curriculum will prob- ably undergo a change to be cont. next col. as would a change in extra-curricular acti- vities. Under the newly elected President, William Kepner, and Vice-President, George W. Robinson, the Midd- West School Board is engaged in finding the best solution to this puzzling situation. Tradition Lies With Teachers Some people may ask, Njust what makes West Snyder a great school.n The answer 'to this question is very simple, uIt's faculty.u One third of the faculty has been teaching at west Swder for over ten yearsg .and at least two mirds have been teaching for over five years which gives West Snyder's faculty a high rating in teaching experimce. Mix this with the Dash new ideas of the young- er teachers and you've got the makings of a great faculty. One third of West Snyder's faculty have a Masters degree, which is ano- ther reason why teach- ing personnel at West Snyder are second to none. These teachers are the reason for a tradition at Superintendents Make All Systems Go Mr. Howard Master Mr. Robert Yerger Superintendent Assistant to the Superintendent School Board Oversees Gperations Midd-West District School Board: SITTING: Marlin Haines, Clair Goss, Mrs. Sara Sharadin, Mrs. Jeanne Weber, Mrs. Helen Frey. Good Senior leadership manifests itself throughout a school. As I reminisce about your accomplishments during your stay at West Snyder, I am reminded of numer- ous things you initiated for the first time which were well executed. Our thanks for the fine leadership and con- tributions you have provided to your alma mater. May you provide the same leadership to your future community and may your contributions be equally evident and rewarding. Sincerely, 0 M0'kZ14- Norman E. Kline Principal From The Rock of Experience Dear Seniors: Much advice has been given over the past twelve years to prepare you for the future. It is my sincere desire that this advice and our association has given you the necessary tools to make your lives full of happiness, fame, security, wealth, and a comfortable living. The June ior class, under the capable leadership of Max Lash, began decor- ations about a month before the prom. Since the class didn't like the idea of purchasing a ready-made kit for the theme, they decidq ed to start from scratch to create an enchanting picture of the city of Verona. The theme was NA Time ,for Usn, with the city to be cont. next col. of Verona and the Shakespearian setting being the main attrac- tion. John Snyder, chairman of decor- ations, was aided by fMr. Shellenberger in drawing up plans for the gym. A new development took place at the prom last year. The court iwas. as usual, select- ed by the Juniors and Seniors, but only those who attended the prom voted for king and Queen. Teresa Bubb and Dale Wright were crowned queen and king by 1971's queen, Joni Bishop. The first pert of the lunch period had gone reasonably well and she was deliver- ing a large tray of food to the principal and his wife. Learning a new culture was, in itself, a wonderful experience. It has been a great step for me to come from Kangaroo Country to Deer Country, and I was proud to be part of this West Snyder District. To the student body and faculty at West Snyder High School, I would like to express my deepest appreciation, for allowing me to be a member of your school system. My most sincere thanks go to the West Snyder Rotary Club, and my four host families for participating in this International Youth Exchange Programme, of which I was a part. Lastly, I would like to say that I came to Snyder County with the intention of modeling myself around the young people that I met. Ijust hope I have achieved this goal. Thank you for all your friendship, Peter Wheatley Australia, Page WMM, Seniors Invade Washington The British weren't the only ones to invade Wash- ington! At 4:00 A.M. May 19, 1972, the Class of 73 began their trip to the nation's capital. Arriving at 10:30 A.M., the army of Juniors first pillaged the Capital. Then, under the leadership of Mrs. Margie Krebs, Mr. Douglas Lepley, and Mr. Roger Guss, the juniors Went on to the White House, which was the highlight of the morning. After the fall of the Na- tional Archives in the early afternoon, the nation's law enforcement agency, the F.B.l. was put under seige by the Juniors. After this victory, the Class of 73 went on to Arlington Cemetary and the Smith- sonian Institute. The day was capped by a visit to Ford's Theatre Where the class viewed the musical Godspell.', Victorious, the Juniors then began the long march home! However 8-l and 8-h homerooms are right behind. Overall height of the 9-3 homeroom has made ther the leading contender for the championship. Although 8-l and 8-h homerooms are lack- ing in height they do possess extreme speed and quickness. The three showdown games should prove to be exciting. Turning to the ping-pong segment of the intramural program Ivan Hassinger and Bot Bowersox have advanced to the finals in the senior high singles tournament. The final game will be unusual in that both players are lefties. The junior high ping-pong tournament so fer has been quite competitive. A mass- ive entrance of play- ers has made the ture ney one of the most competitive in years. with all this corpeti- tion Doug Moyer and Brian Hassinger are leading contenders for the championship. Last but not least is the intra- mural volleyball tour- nament. Thus for 8-3 and 8-l homerooms are in first place and it appears that the show- down game between those two powers will decide which homeroom wins the championship. Class Stands The 1972 Beaver Fair has come and gone and only memories of hard work and sacri- ficies remain. Once again, the students at West Snyder have out- done themselves in an effort to make this the best Beaver Fair ever. The following final reports reveal this exceptional year. The eighth grade, selling french fries, pop corn, and baked goods, totaled only 68.h9 more than the seventh grade in gross receipts. Surpris- ingly enough, their total profit was S2lj.69. Junior High Magazine Drive Due to the ef- 'forts of the hard- working Junior High students, West Snyder has again been victor- ious. This year's magazine drive has been another success. with the help of the homeroom captains, magazine drive man- agers, and homeroom teachers, the ambi- tious young salesmen surpassed their desig- nated goal of 85,250 by Q3l9.76, making a grand total of 35,569.76 in sales. to be cont. next col. For their efforts all students who sold two or more magazines selected prizes from a prize chart. Depend- ing on the number of magazines sold, the students received .prizes from Various levels on the prize chart. The rewarding 'of prizes produced incentive to sell more magazines. Also, the sellers of certain popular magazines re- ceived extra bonus prizes. The magazine drive produced other benefits. Two ice cream parties, one for the highest homeroom on the first day of the drive and the other for the highest homeroom at the end of the drive were enjoyed by the students who submitted subscrip- tions on the desig- nated days. Also, the student body enjoyed a full-length Walt Dis- ney movie during regu- larly scheduled class cess was achieved by Gwen Kaufman, eighth grade, and Pam Heim- bach, seventh grade, who tied for highest salesman by each sell- ing a total of 23 sub- scriptions. The homeroom which sold the most lsubscriptions on a per student basis was Mr. Miller's, 8-3, Mr. Botdorf's home- room, 7-2, placed sec- ond. The two sisters, Abby and Martha Brewster, really think they are giving these old men eternal happiness by killing them. The plot is further complicated by the appearance of the three nephews of Abby and Martha, one of whom really is a murderer. In addition to the acting, the set of this production should prove to be of pro- fessional quality. Mr. Shellenberger has indicated that the set will be completely furnished with authen- tic antiques on loan from a local dealer. Homecoming On October 20, 1972, West Snyder was the scene of a pros- pectively new annual event. The fair- grounds were trans- formed into the scene of West Snyder's first Homecoming. Despite the cold weather the event was a success as demonstrated by the attendance of approxi- mately 25O people. Acting as Master of Ceremonies, Max Lash began the night's events by introducing the court. The Home- coming court was elected by the student body and included Barb Shambach, a Sophomoreg Cheryl Shambach, Patty Eater, and Kim Kline, Juniorsg and Dixie Rice, a Senior. The girls wore long gowns and carried long- stemmed red roses. The next center of interest was, the bonfire, an appropri- ate spot to be on such a cold night. With the help of Peter Wheatley and his com- mittee, the logs were cut and piled in the old traditional manner of the Boy Scouts. While the cheerleaders led the fans in cheers tion booth was pre- pared for the final voting. With all of the votes in, the fans' attention was turned to the skits put on by the cheerleaders and the soccer players. Immediately following the skits, Max Lash announced the winners of the poster contest. First place was awarded to Jeanette Carper, Cheryl Sham- bach, Cheryl Yetter, Darlene Rigel, and Roy Wagner. Second place was given to a group including Steve Knepp, Jack Knepp, Ivan Has- singer, Karl Krick, Mike Erb, John Snyder, and Doug Dean who were representing the Var- sity Club. Ranking third in the competi- tion was the Sophomore Class which was repre- sented by Tom Everly, Dianne Kline, and Marci Stallone. The part of Home- coming which everyone was anxiously awaiting was naturally held until last. At this time, the Master of Ceremonies announced the queen of the Homo- coming, Cheryl Sham- bach. Cheryl had been nominated by the as queen, F.F.A, and she received a bouquet of red roses. Runner- up was Dixie Rice. Due to the suc- cess of our first Homecoming, it is POS' sible that this event will become another Nest Snyder tradition. 100 Left ,H , .I --Q Gan 'A' ': - - - - lineman vHkQ?gWWW,w,m m M w w-w Q ,. The Dramatics Club helps with the Christ- mas assembly and pre- sents an assembly of its own. Students who are members of the FTA learn about the prob- lems and satisfactions of teaching. During National Education week, the members of the FTA gain actual experience as they spend a day substitut- ing for the faculty members at West Snyder. Those students who have a high soho- lastic ability provide the school , with the Junior and Senior Honor Societies. The members of the Senior to be cont. next col. The Varsity cheer leading squad is com- 'prised of ten girls from tenth through twelfth grades. They are chosen by faculty members on the basis of their knowledge of cheers, their pep, their poise, and vari- ous other qualities. The Junior Var- sity cheerleaders con- sist of ten eighth and ninth grade girls. They are also chosen .by faculty members on the same basis as are the Varsity cheer- leaders. In the spring of each year, tryouts for ,the fall JV and Var- sity squads are held. The girls chosen will cheer just for soccer and field hockey. At the conclusion of these sports, tryouts are held again for the winter cheerleading positions, These girls will cheer dur- ing the wrestling and basketball seasons. Besides cheering at all sports events except baseball, Soft- ball, and golf, it is the cheerleaders' responsibility to con- duct pep rallies, make signs, and generate enthusiasm within the .school. A Year Of Success In reviewing the past athletic year the Mountie baseball team complied an overall record of lO wins and 7 loses. The team posted a 9-5 league record which was sec- ond best only to West Perry. Although the Mounties finished in second place, five members of the squad were voted to the all- star teams. Robert Rager, Steve Knepp, Snyder had its own golf team. Although West Snyder functioned as an independent team the Mountie golfers compiled a fine first year record. This first year record shows great promise for the future. The girl's field hockey team posted an O-8-l record but it was only their second year of competition, Tnterest has been shown and an improved squad is expected next year. The Mountie soc- cer team secured a fine l2-2-2 record but failed to capture the Tri-Valley League Title or the District IV Championship. This 1l,,,-v, J . -.... ceived first team honors and Mike Erb and Lynn Dean received second team honors. Since all members of these all-star teams will be return- ing with the exception of Lynn Dean, these players should supply a strong nucleus for this year's team. Last year's girls softball team posted a 6-5 league record and an overall 5-5 record, Although there were five seniors lost to graduation, Bev Bowersox, Barb Gross, Adrienne Hetrick, Kim Kline, Dayna Knepp Kline, Dayna Knepp, and Christine Stuck should provide a strong nucleus for this year's team, A new dimension was added to the sports curriculum last year. For the first time in history, West to be cont. next col. rected next year, To date the girls basketball team has a 7-h record. The girls have entered District IV playoffs and will lay Line Mountain in .1,,a,, -. nn A Tribute To Seniors As' the class of '73 brings it's high school career to a close, the West Snyder sports teams will be losing a lot of talent to graduation. The soccer team will be losing the following players: Glenn Fogel, center-forward: Dennis Seler, inside: Dane Aumiller, halfback: Tim Weller, halfback: Jim Geiswite, goalie: John Snyder inside: Steve Wagner, halfback: Doug Rigel, inside: an Tom Leipold, fullback. The Field Hockey team is losing Beverly Bowersox goalie: Christine Stuck, half- back: Sue Wagner,WUKS and Debbie Zieber, fullback. The Mountie bas- ketballers will be mi- nus six players next year. They are Dan Mattern, forward: Glenn Fogel, guard: Mark Swanson, forward: Keith Landis, guard: Gary Wray, forward: and Alan Wray, guard. Max Lash is leaving the Varsity manager position. The girl's bas- ketball team will lose seniors Barbie Gross, guard: Adrienne Het- rick, forward: Mary Jo Morrison, forward: and Beverly Bowersox, cen- ter. Beverly Kratzer will retire as Varsity manager. The Mountie grap- plers will lose five varsity men. Doug Ri- gel, 105: John Snyder, 119: Gerry Geedey,l38: Steve Wagner, 155: and Tom Leipold, Hwt. Folk l A s I A Q 9 N W N Aggravated Agnes The last day of school has come and gone, and poor Aggra- vated Agnes still hasn't 'recovered from her disastrous day. with the excite- ment of the final day of school being so near, Agnes got only one hour of sleep, That explained why she snored when the prin- cipal was -bidding a nappy summer speech to -the students in the assembly. After being practically mutilated by fellow students and teachers surrounding her, Agnes was deter- mined to be attentive for the rest of the assembly. She was doing a fairly ood ob of S J 'staying awake until the presentations of awards. Agnes, quite bored, dozed off a little, and when she woke up she thought she heard her name being called to come forward. She jerked and sprung to herfhet. The next thing she knew, she was being presented with an all- starg soccer troohy. Poor Agnes must have been dreaming.. After the assemb- ly, Agnes realized it was time to hand in her textbooks. She so tired that was morning that she plac- ed her papers in new lunchbox and her sand- wich in her science book. Upon opening the book, she found a peanut butter and jelly sandwich smashed between the pages. Oh my, what else could happen? with Agnes, one could expect any- thing Th fi di - trous igcidegeloccgggd when Agnes was squat- ting down at her lock- Sr. While she was cleaning out the tons to be cont. next col. ers .she found gge phgd no place to keep her locker key sc she put it in her mouth for safe-keeping, Her arch-enemy, Bertha Brat, saw Agnes swamp- ed with the papers and Purposely bumped her when passing, Agnes 8HSPed and swallowed the key. well, it looks like Agnes would be stuck with this llocker next year. But Whykdidkit have to be Graduation On June 5, an- other class of Seniors will have passed through the halls and doors of West Snyder. They will leave with an experience which hopefully has prepared them for the world of reality that awaits. Their years at West Snyder will be the? framework with which, they will either sink! or swim. On graduation day as the Senior stands in line to receive his diploma, memories will swim in his head. He will remember his first day. He will remember 90, young, frightened students searching for their homerooms. And then his memory will jump to be cont. next col. ll-L ahead to another first day, his first day as a Senior, confident and at ease, pretend- ing that the world lies at his feet wait- ing for his command. But then the senior will receive his di- ploma and his bubble that he has lived in lfor six years will burst. Hopefully, a young man will emerge Every time this hap- pens, West Snyder's star shines a little brighter, and every time a young man emerges, an extra sparkle will be notic- ed, Now, as the class of 1973 bids its fare- well, there is only one hope in its mind, that in years to come the star will not tar- nish and that the class will be able to look back on its high school career and say that these were its gfinest years. GOOD-BYE. 41,5 Senior Farewell On June 3 and 5, 1973, eighty-seven West Snyder High School Seniors enjoyed the honor of gradua- tion, At a Baccalau- reate service on Sun- day, June 3, the grad- uating class listened to the message of Rev. Kenneth Swanson. In addition, songs were sung by several vocal- ists of the school. Two days later on June 5, the Class of '73 found themselves experiencing commence- ment as they marched down the center aisle of West Snyder's audi- torium while the Junior Band played nPomp and Circum- stance,n The Valedic- torian and the Saluti- torian then iindivt- dually addressed the members of the class along with their teachers, parents, and friends. After making a brief speech, the principal, Mr. K1iH6n awarded several seniors such honors as The Best Male and The Best Female Athlete, The Foreign Language Award, and The Citi- zenship Award. Imme- diatly following this, the Midd-West School District Superinten- dent, Mr, Howard Master, addressed the Class of 1973. Fi- nally, Mr. William Kepner Sr., President of the Midd-W,5t Dis- trict School Board presented the eighty- seven diplomas to the seniors as their high school years came to a close and their future began, K. ,H ' V .
