The Mounties were the surprise club of the Tri-Valley League in 1958. With a host of inexperienced ball players they managed to tie for the league title with Middleburg. The big wins for the red and white were two back to back victories over Lewistown, 8-1 and 4-3. The leading batsman for 1958 was Sophomore Dale Hackenberg with an average of 450. The leading defensive ball player was pitcher -catcher K.L. Wagner with a 977 average. D. Hackenburg, K.L. Wagner, and Frosh., Tony MacGlaughlin, were stand-out pitchers as underclassmen. 73

CHEERLEADERS Ja.nice Heeter, Bonnie Baker, Joy Knepp, Pat Fry, Linda Young, Kathleen Dean, Sandra Herbster, Margaret Henry. Co-captains: Kathleen Dean, Janice Heeter. Each year the candidates for Varsity Cheerleading appear in a special assembly at the end of the yearg eight of them are selected by popular vote of the entire student body to be Varsity Cheerleaders for the coming year. The Cheerleaders are a great inspiration to the teams. They travel with them to all the games and encourage the spectators to cheer the team on to victory. The uniforms ofthe Varsity Cheerleaders consist of white sweaters, red skirts, and white sneakers. The VarsityCheer1eaders have sponsored dances, sold pom-poms, and sold emblems in order to earn money with which to buy sweaters. JUNIOR VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Front Row: Harriet Hawk, Tyna Snook, Kay Goss. Back Row: Judy Snook, Arlene Bickhart, Jane Benner, Glenda Leeper, Ruth Ann Ocker. Each fall the eight Junior Varsity Cheerleaders are selected by the vote of the Junior High School. They appear with the Varsity Cheerleaders at all the home games, they lead the cheers for the Junior Varsity games, and do a fine job of leading the spectators in their cheering. Their uniforms consist of red skirts, white long-sleeved blouses, red vests, and white sneakers.

The record for 1958 West Snyder 2 East Juniata 'West Snyder 3 Tuscarora Valley West Snyder 3 Southern Area Joint 'West Snyder 3 Greenpark Union 'West Snyder 6 Greenwood 'West Snyder 0 East Juniata West Snyder 4 Tuscarora Valley 'West Snyder 4 Blain Union 'West Snyder 1 Middleburg West Snyder 2 Southern Area Joint Totals C5-Zjcorner kicks 28 'League Games West Snyder drew its soccer season to a close after winning the Tri-Valley League championship. The climax of this season came when West Snyder defeated a strong and favored Middleburg team on Middleburg's field to the score of l-0. This victory gave the team the opportunity to enter district 4 eliminations by playing Southern Area Joint HighSchool under the lights atSelinsgrove Area Joint High School. A crowd of approximately 1000 attended this colorful affair. After a 2-2 deadlock at the close of two over-time periods, the Mounties lost their bid for victory on the basis of having been outscored on corner kicks, 5-2. With a relatively young team, a season's record of 8 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie, was compiled. The league record was 5 wins and 1 tie. High scorer on the team with 9 goals was Sophomore, Tony McGlaughlin. Dennis Knepp, senior, was second with a total of 6. Another outstanding Senior who had an excellent year was the veteran goalie, Barry Arnold, who had only 4 goals scored against him during the whole season. 74
