Many of them would like to have become engi- neers, jet pilots, lawyers, nurses, dress de- signers, medical doctors, certified public accountants or another field, but they chose the teaching career instead. We know that this is a field of dedication, and we hope that they will continue to work at West Side. In the many years to come, we will always remember most of you Faculty Dear Seniors of 1989, My graduation message to you is about success . | picked this topic for two reasons. One, you have already experienced success by being in this graduating class. Sec- ond, it is something you can strive for all your life, however you wish to define it. I'm not talking about success in terms of money, power, prestige, or status. What | mean is, no matter what the job, success in doing it is the underlying factor, and it seems to me that there are four keys that are captured in the word success . These keys are competence , values , teaching , and responsibility . Let me explain what | mean. Let's begin with “competence”, each of you is com- petent. Now some of you have more competence than others and in different fields. For example, some of you are more competent in math than your friends are; others are more competent in athletics; others are more competent in art and music; some of you are very competent in mechan- ics. | have often marveled at people who can tune up or rebuild an automobile engine because | don't have this competence and it seems such a complex thing to do. You see my point? We all have our areas of competence and that should help us to be successful. But in the real world, competence is not enough. You need to complement competence with values , the sec- ond key to success. What values do | recommend? The first would be, without doubt, the value of treating others as you want to be treated. That's not preaching. Just think about it and you'll see it is a good way to go through life. The second value is being the best at what you do. No shortcuts, no goofing off, no cutting corners; do what you have to do right and do it well. The third value is to contribute to the groups you belong to. We are, as human beings, a group oriented species. Our group include families, peers, sports, clubs, organizations, to name a few. People sometimes become obsessed with the idea that there must be some deep dark secret for success, when in reality, success can be summed up in two words: I WILL! So | recommend that you start each day with the “I wills.” | will do the best | can today! | will treat people as | want to be treated! | will contribute to the groups | belong to! Now there are two keys left- “teaching” and responsi- bility”. What do | Mean by teaching? Successful people are teaching people. Give me any successful person, and | can illustrate how that person teaches. Responsibility encompasses what | call three “P's”. “Personal responsibility Professional responsibility Public responsibility Successful people are responsible for their own well-be- ing as well as the well-being of their families, friends, neigh- bors, and fellow workers. Successful people are responsible for maintaining and improving their professions. While it is too early for you to be concerned about this, it is not too early at least to think Administration MR. NATHANIEL L. POTTS PRINCIPAL about it. Successful people assume a public responsibility. Now this you can do and may have been doing already. Successful people carry out their responsi- bility by getting involved, by teaching others, by volunteering their time, by making donations, and by voting. This is no less your responsibility. Let me summarize my four keys for success, as you ready yourself for GRADUATION DA Y: -Success means being competent! ‘Success means maintaining a set of values! -Success means being a teacher! -S uccess means carrying out personal, profes- sional, and public responsibilities! So, on your key chain that you carry around with you as you leave your high school years, remember that there are at least four keys on the chain that will do more than open doors or start engines; these are the keys | have written about: competence, values, teaching, and responsibility. After four hours of traveling, we arrived at Baltimore Harbor to tour the shopping areas, walk around the water front, eat and just sight-see. We stayed in Baltimore for three hours; and then journeyed to Richmond, Virginia for our overnight stay at the Holiday Inn. On Sunday morning, we boarded the bus for Kings Dominion and stayed at the amusement park all day long. On Memorial Day morning. we left the hotel for our four-hour journey home, stopping in Maryland for a brief moment to eat a small snack We will always cherish the memories of our Junior Class trip. Seniors Troy Johnson and Marcia Baker were the leaders for the boys and girls cross country team; the leaders had one of the best seasons in more than 5 years The team finished second in the City and third at the Essex County cham- pionship meet. On the boys side, Troy Johnson led the team into bat- tle each and every meet. Cory Jones, Thaub Ishamail, Delwin Carr and Johnny Grimsley were the other key senior members. Juniors Ernesto Perez and Lavonn Townsend had an impressive season— opening the eyes of many opponents. On the girls side, Marcia Baker was the lone senior female on the squad, but she represented the team quite well. She ran extremely well at the Essex County, City and State Champion- ship meets. Christine Lindsey and Tenesia Hankerson were the other key members of the team. The Riders spirits remain high as the team is working hard to prepare themselves for the hectic Indoor Season. Working hard throughout the season, the team had to settle for a 4 and 3 record—losing to East Side, University, and Weequahic. Even though records count, and we cer- tainly tried to improve ours, they do not totally indicate the successfullness-or lack of success-with all teams. Individually, and as a team, the girls con- tinuously improved in skill, sportsmanship, character, maturity, and perseverance throughout the season. With the addition of two new coaches to our staff and the returning of twenty one lettermen, hopefully our team will take City during the 1989 season. The team consisted of seniors—Ola Carswell (captain), Delvoris Bryant, and Kendra Hamilton; juniors— Sabrina 4 Anderson, (co-captain), and Denise - 一 Starks; sophomores Helena Turner and Anita Dickens (most valuable player); and two freshmen— Dewan Collins and LaTonya Graham. The team is led by Laroy Irvin who has averaged over 25 points per game and secondly by Shawn Abraham, who has averaged 17 points per game. With young transfers from Vailsburg and other sur- rounding elementary schools, the Rough Riders will look to compete with the best in the upcoming 1989-90 sea- son. With first year coach Dennis (Moe) Layton (Mr. Rasool), (whose high school team, Weequahic, in 1967 was 314 in the country, sporting a 27-0 re- cord with Moe Layton leading the way). Things looked very bright for W.S.— Mr. Layton’s experience also in the N.B.A., and a talented assistant coaching staff in Troy Webster, (All American—Clifford Scott) and Gary Taylor (All County—West Side) should make W.S.'s presence felt very soon. W.S. will lose three seniors who con- tributed much to the program. De- shawn Cokeley, who wil be remem- bered for his three-pointer buzzer shots that upset high ranking Newark Tech at West Side 66-65, Terrence Flood, who possessed a soft touch around the basket with his good rebounding skills and Paul Bradley, who joined the team late in the season, but made his presence felt with twisting moves un- derneath—along with a good touch from the outside. All three will be missed and remembered for their dedi- cation to the games. W.S. will return with young talent next year, including three promising juniors— Ammaud Nolton, a powerful rebounder and tough defender, James Moore with the good outside jumper, and Ever- ette McCouley, who Coach Layton feels has the ability to be one of the best guards in the State. Other talented guards, Dwayne Cannady, Twan Floyd (both sopho- mores) and J.V. freshman LaRoy Ir- ving: a.k.a. Pop , who averaged well over 25 points a game, completes W.S.'s back court. Coach Layton says, | With one-year experience under our belts, along with the new transfers from Vailsburg Middle School, | look for- ward to a strong season in 1989-90 '. What a sea- soni!!! The 1988-89 track team had one of the finest track seasons in the history of the school and the City of Newark. Each and every week, op- ponents wonder what place other than first would their teams finish. Some of the highlights of the sea- son included running the fastest time in the country in the 4 x 800 meter relay (7:53).
