When Ms. Cato tries to be everybody's mother. When you fall and everyone sees you. Carrying books home. When you get your hopes up high and someone lets you down. When you're doing your best and don't get recognized. When Joyce R. falls in love! When teachers tell you to go to class. When our school competes with a suburban school and loses. When the football players expect the ROYAL TREATMENT.'' When things don't go right. When you only have a little bit of food and someone asks, Can I have some? Getting to school at 8:29 and the security guards closes the door in your face. 7:30 Detention. When you're counting a large amount of numbers and lose count. Being the richest person in the world? Mr. Malone without any detention slips? Tianza Williams and Tonya Whitehead not being together? Mrs. Bennett was Vice Principal. MY MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT When I fell down the stairs of West Side. On my first date, I was so scared that. I coughed all through the movie and the couple sitting next to us offered me a Vicks. When I fell trying to run from the security guard. When I sang the wrong song in church. When I was sitting in class, the sun was shining on my head and my curl started to smoke. When I was cheering and my bnefs were in an uncomfortable position. When I came to school with my shirt on backwards. When I ran to the side door just to have it closed in my face. When 1 wore mix-match socks and everyone knew it but me. When my top came down while I was swimming. When I received a beating in front of the class. When I fell during a relay race in gym. When I tripped on my own shoe string while playing touch football. When I wore my shorts on the wrong side. When I was standing in church and the buttons of my blouse were open. When my mother yelled at me in public. When 1 told the funniest joke I knew, and no one laughed. When my mother's slip fell down while trying to catch the cab. When I went to kick the ball and someone moved it. When my teacher told everyone I was a space cadet. When I brought my new boyfriend home to meet my mother, and when she spoke, her false teeth fell out of her mouth. When I was playing volley-ball and the ball hit my glasses and broke them. When I was walking down the hall and everyone called me BOY GEORGE.” When my mother called my boyfriend John and his name was Michael. When 1 spoke highly of this guy, and as I finished my sentence, he walked by with a girl. WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE FOR NOT DOING YOUR HOMEWORK? I did it. but I left it home. I was tired from making bottles and changing pampers. My dog ate it. I didn't understand it. The cat urinated on it. I lost track of time. I lost it. I didn't have any more notebook paper. I didn't know we had any. My pencil broke. I was watching Dynasty I broke my finger last night. I was sick. Death in the family. My cat got hit by a Tonka truck. I had to do something for my mother. My sister didn't have time to do it lor me. Mr. Edmunson gave me too much work. My mother threw it in the garbage. The bus was held up and the theives took my book bag. I took a nap and woke up too late. I got a beating last night. God That I may do my part For character and confidence And happiness of heart. James. J. Metcalfe Faculty Administrative Mr. Nathaniel L. Potts. Principal Mr. Potts and students Christian Cursey. Jamelle Davis. Allan Murray. Quania Norris and Larry Hamilton; get food ready for distnbution to the needy. Dear Seniors: I'm genuinely please to share with you these important moments in your lives. I'm pleased, first of all. because your graduation represents a celebration of one of the most cherished cultural values of the human race—enlightenment. I'm pleased, secondly, because your graduation represents for all of us, an occasion for sober reflection on the deeper meanings of life. And it is to this purpose that I wish to invite your attention in my message to you. You shall live out your lives in the most sophisticated culture ever to have been developed on the planet Earth. It is at once your high privilege and your awesome burden to bear the label, 'Twenty-First Century Man . Your age is an age of Adventures of the Mind,” especially as such adventure is re fleeted in scientific endeavor. Your age is the age of the atom, of space travel, of the thinking machine, of drugs that can shape men's minds, of symbolic logic, of hidden persuad ers. of assault on the very riddle of life itself. Your age is hardly, however, an age of Ad ventures of the Spirit. Twenty First Century man celebrates his mentality but not his humanity. He strives to shove out his mental horizons, but neglects to cultivate the humane side of his nature. The real question of the future, it appears to me. is the question of whether man can learn to educate his heart as well as his mind—whether he can learn to combine mentality with morality. Remember. “A future worth contemplating will not be achieved solely by flights to the far side of the moon. It will not be found in space. It will be achieved, if it is achieved at all. only in our individual hearts. Here is the overriding issue that I wish to explore with you—the issue of creating a better moral world for yourselves and your contemporaries. It must be obvious that whether you will find for yourselves the so-called Good Life and whether you will be able to help build a Good Society will rest at last on the question of your vision of the good. You shall need to take stock of your values and find yourselves a firm moral stance. And so. in the spirit of this splendid movement. warm with goodwill and the fellowship of the future. Because West Side had more school spirit and more togetherness, the result was more victories than the team has had for a long time. Some of the highlights were: Raffaele Halsey catching an 80-yard touchdown pass against East Side. Horace Roberts throwing for 245 yards and one touchdown in the game against East Side. Donald McNeil rushing for 191 yards and two touchdowns, also in the East Side game. Raymond Hardy rushing for 121 yards and two touchdowns against Central. Mark Caesar running an interception for a touchdown against Jamesburg. West Side's defense shut out Shabazz, East Side, and Vails-burg. The Riders defense stopped Shabazz on the five-yard line to help win the game. Mark Suber did the whopp on the field before the games with Shabazz and Central ended. Ads Bobby McGee Photographer HAS GOTTEN “THE WORD OUT” Mr. Richard Alexander Photographer Ann Lynette Bowser Editor-m-Chief The 1987 Lamp yearbook staff worked hard and diligently to produce a memorable portfolio of our senior year at West Side High School. The staff put in many hours after school and many lunch periods to make sure every page was complete and mailed to the publishers. Many were here during the months of September through December, however, only a few of us were left to the end. Putting this yearbook together took more than just choosing words to go with pictures, it took patience in waiting for pictures and stones; an understanding that everyone could not be on every page; quality to make sure that every page was different and interesting; and vast cooperation from the entire staff and graduating class. Our theme, The Word is Out clearly states that many of us have been accepted to colleges, and others will enter the job market or military services. The word is out that the Class of 1987 is reaching for the stars and know where they want go go. The word is out that we have come a long way, but still have a long way to go. Being the special people that we are, we will get there. My experience as editor of this yearbook has been wonderful. I had the honor of working with committed people and undergoing the joy of learning new things. My experiences were greatly enhanced by the opportunity that 1 had to work with Ms. Mary H. Cato, a woman of great depth. She has been an inspiration in my life. She was always there when we needed her and always had the right answers for all our questions. Her devotion to this yearbook and to the staff is greatly appreciated. She will always be remembered. We, the yearbook staff, hope this year's book has helped you to remember that The Word Is Out , success comes first. Whatever you choose to do. do it with dignity. I wish you all much success and a life time of good luck! Good luck in all your endeavors! Ann Lynette Bowser Editor-in-Chief Yearbook Slait 151 The Word Is Out . . . Come On And Shout!!
