NATHANIEL POTTS, PRINCIPAL ADMINIS BOARD Of EDUCATION WEST SIDE HIGH SCHOOt 403 SOUTH ORANGE AVENUE NEWARK. NEW JERSIY 07103 June, 1963 Dear Seniors, My graduation message to you is vary simple, “You Can Do It Easily! Whatever you need to do, no matter bow difficult or demanding or challenging, you can do it -- easily! You can have wisdom, strength, poise, guidance, assurance — anything you need at any moment and under any eircxsstance. How? You have the very ability within you as your own personal birthright and heritage. Pecause of and through this ability in you, you can do anything you need, want, or desire to do -- easily! Take a few minutes right now to bo still and know this for yourself. Relax physically, emotionally, mentally. Gently but firmly remind yourself, I can do it — easily. As you let this idea take hold in your consciousness, you will find yourself more adequate, confident, and assured than you had thought possible. Instead of thinking and saying, What if I can’t? or Kh.it if it doesn’t work? or What if something happens? you will be using the power of the “Spirtt in you to successfully meet whatever challenge or difficulty that you most face. In closing, let me leave this thought with you.... “Wv need not go along with unhappy conditions, believing that we Have no choise in the matter. Always we have a choice, always it is in our power to change the pattern of our lifo. There is nothing you cannot accomplish, no goal that can’t be attained, if you have abundant energy, joyous enthusiasn, faith in yourself, and most imoortant of all prepared yourself accordingly. Remembor.... You Can Do It Easily! Peace and Prosp-irltV Nathaniel L. The marching unit consists of 28 horns. 7 percussions, 5 twirlers. 16 flags, and the cheerleading squad. Mr. Eck is the band director and is assisted by Mr. Dave Long and Mr. Andre Farmer. It is the belief of the instructors to have only dedicated and experienced performers on the field The band is not interested in numbers, but production. The marching unit's goal is steady improvement throughout the season. Next year, the band will begin competing against other high school bands throughout New Jersey. The band will be the first in Newark to do so. Competition will be against bands of the same size and number. We will miss our graduating seniors who helped to make our band the greatest in the CITY. RONALD MCCLOUD TIGHT END COACH COACH WHIPPS AND RIDERS KEEP THE SPIRIT I would like to take this time to thank the many fan that we had during the 1981 -82 football season. We can't begin to tell you how we appreciate your loyalty even those who looked upon us ns a comedy of errors. Although our record was 1-8. we prospered in many ways; knowledge of the game, discipline; we also found out that the best coaches are either in the stands or in the classrooms telling u what we should have done. We thank you too. You were the fuel that kept us burning. We also learned what it is like to practice under extreme hardship. Last, but not least, the football players and I say without V hesitation, that everyone who wears a football suit is not a football players, especially those who quit. I have tried to make my feelings known about quitters, and you know who you are. To those guys who stayed through the two-a-day sessions, the long meetings, the agonizing drills that the coaches put you through, you have my admiration, love, respect, and most of all my loyalty. Coach The 1983 Soccer Team closed out its season on a blustery fall day in November. The final game was against Central High. The first period was scoreless. West Side scored the first goal of the game in the second period as Sophomore Anthony Prescott -10 scored off a pass from Junior Jody Rearfield «9. The West Side fans were out of control cheering their team onward. Central rebounded to slip the ball by West Side and tied the game. Halftime was unusually quiet The third period ended and still a tie game. West Side kept pounding away at Central's goal — shot after shot — but no one could score. Three minutes were left in the season. Would this final game be a tie? The it happened. Junior 12 Wayne Prescott scored. The West Side Soccer team's final game was victorious The score — WS 2 and Central 1. The season record stands at 6-10-1. On the Hoys Side ... graduation and injuries hampered the success of the team. Seniors Tyrone Johnson and Maurice Wilkinson ran extremely well despite being sprinters. The younger runners gained the necessary experience which will help them in the future. On the Girls Side ... It was a good season. Despite not winning any major team titles, the ladies placed 2nd in the City championship meet. They also finished 4th at the Essex County and Group II State Sectional meet. Both Bobbie and Glenda McGee had a good season. These two runners placed 1st and 4th at the City, and 1st and 6th at the County championship. Seniors Gwen Richardson came on strong and surprised everyone at the end of the season. Bobbie McGee won the Newark City and Essex County championship two consecutive years.
