A S K E T A L L T E A M 121 BASKETBALL 1980-1981 Roughrider Basketball Team The Class of 1981 can be very proud of the varsity basketball team. Led by its five senior members, the team had a winning record. Highlights of the season included winning the championship in the Essex County Tournament and being seeded fifth in the sectional State Tournament. The team was also ranked seventh in the County by The Star Ledger. The highlights of the season were the games with Livingston on December 30 and with Clifford Scott on February 22. In the Livingston game. West Side won its first tournament since 1954, and the Riders triumphed 73-66. Norm Hatcher was named the MVP of the Christmas Tournament. The Riders were given little chance of beating Clifford Scott, which was ranked first in the County and sixth in the State However, a total team effort resulted in a 59-57 upset victory before a large crowd at Seton Hall University. This win propelled West Side into the ECT semifinals, the first Roughrider team to advance this far since 1971. For his efforts in that game. Charles Jones was named The Star Ledger's Boy Athlete of the Week. This year s team has laid the groundwork for many successful seasons to come. Darryl McMillon. the captain of the squad, exemplified the kind of desire and hustle that it takes to turn alosingteam intoawinner. McMillon started for three years, a great accomplishment. Gary Stewart and Clarence Hayward were the play-makers who were responsible for directing the Green and White offense. These two men did the job well, as the Riders averaged nearly 70 points a game The 1980-1981 basketball team provided many exciting and happy experiences for all West Siders. John Davis is one of the best anchor legs to run at West Side. Joanne Clark has lived up to her All-State billing by surpassing her 1980 performances. CALVARY YOUTH CORPS 1114 BROAD STREET NEWARK. NEW JERSEY -7102 203 Now Is The Time For Us to Say Good Bye Good Luck Class of 1982 204 DANA CONFERS WITH HER STAFF DANA WITH MRS CATO. ADVISOR TO THE READERS: While this book was in process, there were many critics, but only a few creators. The talkers outnumbered the doers. We. the Lamp staff, put many long and difficult hours into making this the most comprehensive yearbook in the history of West Side High School. We proudly believe that you will agree that this is the best yearbook ever. Putting together a yearbook is more involved than just taking pictures and placing them on a page. It took cooperation and dedication. There were pages to be done—done right. There were headlines to be met—met on time. The pressure was on always. Changes had to be made at the last minute. Long hours duirng and after school every day were spent to make sure we met the deadlines. I enjoyed my position on the staff this year because of the people who were part of it. not only did we become friends, we became a family. Although there were times when we had a difference of opinion, we managed to reach agreement. Mrs. Mary Cato, our advisor made it all possible. We couldn't have asked for a mroe devoted and caring person. Not only did she advise us on the yearbook, but if we had a personal problem, she was never too busy to listen In closing, we the staff, would like to thank Lorstan's Studios. Mrs. Summers. Mr. Colyer. Mrs. Spillman. Mrs. Watson. Mrs. Tyson and the Class of 1981. We could not have done it without YOU!! DANA MARIA LEE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF 205 Oh, Alma Mater, West Side High West Side's a school that needs improvement. More teachers and students should care and take more ride in the school. —Leon Williams West Side is a school of good and bad. Too many students waste valuable time, but inspite the negatives, there are creativity and talent displayed by many. —George Jefferson West Side Story deals with the noise and large population just as West Side High. Too many people want to be heard and seen instead of striving to improve. —Jeffery Langley West Side has many intelligent and talented students who have made it inspite of the choas. —Darla Renee Fillmore West Side is a place to learn, and students need to become more mature and serious. —Linda E. Ham I feel West Side could be changed with the cooperation from the students and staff. ---Danny Miles West Side is a good place to be. it is a place for learning and a place for fun. —Gregory Blocker Being a student is more to us. Being a teacher that does not cuss. Attending West Side is a lot to me. But graduating is the way to be. -— Willie Speight I know that West Side would be a better school if the young men and women who don't want to get their education were dismissed They come to school only to take up space and wear beautiful clothes. -—Sharon Y.
