J love you! your Parent(s) DEDICATION TO A FRIEND MRS. DORYCE BRADLEY Mrs. Dorycc Bradley came to West Side High School in September 1971 to serve as security guard. Prior to coming here, she worked as an inspector at a lingerie factory. She has been a mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to all of us. She has always been firm but fair. She has maintained respect from all the students throughout her eight years. A dancing career was part of Mrs. Bradley’s earlier years. She enjoyed dancing in the RKO circuit with Bill Robinson and Buck and Bubbles. She also danced at other theaters and night clubs in the metropolitan area. Unfortunately, she broke her leg in 1946 and had to end her dancing career. She will always remember her last performance at Small’s Paradise in Harlem. After retiring, Mrs. Bradley plans to rest awhile and then do a little traveling. She will, however, come back to visit West Side. She says that she will mostly miss the students whom she calls her family,” and will always remember assisting them to class. Mrs. Bradley, we the graduating class of 1980, wish you the best in your retirement. We take great pride in dedicating this yearbook to you. 8 CLASS OF 1980 Our Advisors u Mr. Lonnie Paige Ms Maude Prince SENIOR CLASS ADVISORS We the Class of 1980 would like to express our warmest thanks to Ms. Maude Prince and Mr. Lonnie Paige, our senior class advisors. DARDEN Acting Administrative Coordinator of Federal Programs GLORIA BRYANT Public Information Officer DOUGLAS SMITH Dissemination Specialist Admit i Mr Nathaniel I Potts Principal June. 1980 Dear Seniors. My graduation message to you is very simple. “You Can Do It Easily! Whatever you need to do. no matter how difficult or demanding or challenging, you can do it—easily! You can have wisdom, strength, poise, guidance, assurance anything you need at any moment and under any circumstance. How? You have the very ability within you as your own personal birthright and heritage. Because of and through this ability in you. you can to anything you need, want, or desire to do—easily! Take a few minutes right now to be still and know this for yourself. Relax physically, emotionally, mentally. Gently bui firmly remind yourself, “I can do it easily. As you let this idea take hold in your consciousness, you will find yourself more adequate, confident, and assured than you had thought possible Instead of thinking and saying, What if I can't? or “What if it doesn't work? or What if something happens?” you will be using the power of the Spirit in you to successfully meet whatever challenge or difficulty that you must face. In closing, let me leave this thought with you . . . We need not go along with unhappy conditions, believing that we have no choice in the matter. Always we have a choice, always it is in our power to change the pattern of our life. There is nothing you cannot accomplish, no goal that can't be attained, if you have abundant energy, joyous enthusiasm, faith in yourself, and most important of all prepared yourself accordingly. Remember . . . You Can Do It Easily! Peace and Prosperity istration Consider ihe postage stamp, my son. [t secures success through its ability to stick to one thing till it gets there. Josh Hillings MR MICHAEL MIRABELLA VICE-PR I NCI PA I. MR FRANK PELOSO VICE-PRINCIPAL To the class of 1980, we w ish the best of all of life's challenges and the tools with which to successfully meet them. For life without challenge becomes boring, and boredom often leads to non-achievement. But. challenges must be met with skill. It will be your life’s work to make yourself skillful. The 80's will be a decade of maximum changes in a minimum of time, and you must be able to adjust to the swiftness of the social currents that will cither sweep you along with them, or be directed by you. Remember, one of life’s saddest individuals is the man who never realizes any of his goals. You may not know what you want to be. but you should have an idea as to what you hope to have someday. Keep to it! Keep it in sight! Be prepared for when it comes along! You’ll get there! Judith M. Willie Richardson and Ricky Ausbon were the familiar faces that most often crossed the finish line first. Daniel Williams. Darrell McMillon and Jeff Williams were the other students from the squad. Freshman runners were Lea Jean. Olivia Rhodes. Yolanda Adams and Jackie Hill (teamed) with senior Glenda Brown to lead the girls to a second place finish in the city. 106 MELVIN (BOB) CLARK GLENDA BROWN RICKY AUSBON JOHNNIE MAE ROYAL MELISSA GRAY JUANITA GILLON 107 West Side Wrestling “The West Sideway” is a way of tradition, pride and dedication. This year we will better last year’s 6-3 record. A winning tradition is no easy task. Last year West Side produced one regional champ who went to the states for the first time in school’s history-. Also three district No. 10 place winners, two city champions four place winners. We lost the city title by one point to East Side; we placed fourth in the District tournament. This year we are off to better those goals with a nucleus of veterans: Wayne Stubbs, Reggie Phillips. Kevin Turner. Alec Smith, and William Baker. So far this season, we have placed third in the Elizabeth International Tournament with three champions Wayne Stubbs, Alec Smith, and William Baker. Credited to our wins thus far include victories over Shabazz, Valley, Montgomery, Barringer, losses include Columbia, St. Benedict’s and Seton Hall. Standing (I to r) Coach Solomon. L Turner. A. A third district place finish last year and an Elizabeth Tournament Champion this year. Baker has pinned everybody he has wrestled except Seton Hall (13-7 win). He works takedowns well. He has a good gamby roll from referee's position. Baker holds a team record for most pins in the least amount of time. REGGIE PHILLIPS placed third in the City Tournament last year. He is expected to win the title this year. Wrestling at 108-115 lb. weight class. Reggie is quicker than most wrestlers at that weight. He uses speed to his advantage oo takedowns and escapes. ALEC SMITH, a four-year varsity wrestler who won the Roanoke. Vi. Tournament as a freshman He was a district runner up as a junior, and second in the city tournament. Alec is a knowledgeable wrestler, and has great balance and strong grip. He uses various leg rides on opponents He also has a good fireman's carry takedown. WILLIE WHITE is expected to perform well this year. In spite of the fact he is a rookie. He is wrestling better with every match. He holds one of the highest academic averages oo the team. 109 Indoor Track—Female Division GLENDA BROWN JUANITA GILLON 110 JOHNNIE MAE ROYAL Standing: (I to r) J. Royal. L. Turner. Coach Stoney. J. Under the directions of our adviser, Mrs. Cato, Editors, Juanita Gillon and Robert Register, the yearbook staff went through many tasks of selecting pictures and designing layouts. However, hard work and perseverance paid off in helping us put together a yearbook of the highest quality. ROBERT REGISTER. EDITOR JUANITA GILLON.
