Text from Pages 1 - 132 of the 1973 volume:

The grand essentiols in life are something to do, something to love and something to hope for. Editor: Vanessa Freeland lay out Editor: Vonessa Freeland Gary Pitts Sports Coordinator: Emmett Moore Staff: Scheryl Davis Joanne WHIiams Carl lemon Minnie Morales Curtis Anderson Advisor: Mrs. June Dozier Many thanks to those who have contributed ideas and workable criticisms to the production of this yearbook. We are deeply grateful to Mr. Raymond Ornsby who designed our beautiful yearbook cover. ujamaa The agencies depicted above ore just a few that oid and assist the youth of Newark. Model Cities of Newark is one of the planning ogencies for the city of Nework and the community. Talent Search for Youth works feverishly with all high school students anxious to enter college. Dare is one of the drug rehabilitation centers in Newark which tries to help people with drug oddiction problems. As you can see, some members of West Side s student body mode o grond tour of the Dare Center on Littleton Avenue and we also went to the kitchen where some of the Dare members were prepar.ng dinner. 2 CLASS LEADERS Sandro Griffin Voted xtorion Jo-Ann Will.am SoMotorion Von   o Baker Clott Preudent Itnion Vemg Margie Murrell Qoji Vice-Prettdenl Business Manoger Collett Gray Ptesident of the Sfudenf Council We, the Senior Class of Nineteen Hundred and Seventy-three, have proudly fulfilled the necessary requirements for graduation here at West Side High Shool. Although we have been faced with many uncertainties during this period, we were strongly pulled through by the guidance, conduct, and interest of our class leaders. It is now that we take pride and pleasure in the acknowledgement of these members of our Senior Class. First, to Sandra Griffin, valedictorian, and to Jo-Ann Williams, saluta-torian, of our graduating class, both of whom have held high acodemic grades throughout their years of West Side High School. Next, we wish to acknowledge Vanessa Baker, President of the Senior Closs, Lenton Vining, Vice-President, and Margie Murrell, Business Manager for their leadership in steering the reins of all the closs affairs. Together, these members of our class put forth an effort to make it one of the best graduating classes ever produced by West Side High School. Finally, we salute Collette Gray, President of the Student Council, who worked collectively with others for a change in the interest of the students. We now applaud ourselves, the Closs of '73, for completing four glorious years at West Side. 3 The City of Newark is the proud host of three institutions of higher learning. Pictured at the right is the present building housing Essex County College. Below is on aerial view of ECC as plonned for the future. The colleges ore located in downtown Newark and are conveniently accessible to practically anyone wishing to attend. The nocturnal view of Rutgers University (above) serves many residents of Newark and other cities and towns of New Jersey. Finally, Newark College of Engineering is one of the finest engineering colleges in this country. We are indeed proud that these institutions are here to serve the educotionol needs of the Nework citizenry. 5 Those having torches will pass them on to others. The Administrotion and the Faculty of West Side High School will always seek to teach and to inspire all of those students who enter this edifice for learning purposes. The commitment to incorporate skills, values and goals shall always be an objective of those who serve the students. 6 Administration and Faculty Administration The Chorimon of the Governing Board, Mr. Kenneth Woters, Jr., and the two Associate Chairmen, Mr. Gordon Moyes and Mr. Sal Salerno, along with the Governing Board itself, are the ruling members of West Side High School. HOMEROOM 203 The senior class members of Horn room 203 hove worked with sin-cerety and devotion to achieve their goal of graduation, so that they may go into society and succeed as some of its most productive members. Throughout the school year students of homeroom 203 have shown respect toward their fellow students. They have shown signs of unity, a sense of humor, ond the desire to get ahead through education. Several members of our homeroom have taken part in the various sports, teams, and activities offered at West Side, while others have participated or helped in those senior activities which took place during the schoolyear. Many thanks are given to Mrs. Alice Glover, our homeroom teacher. Mrs. Glover has kept accurate attendance records and secured on orderly homeroom. Even though I only associate with them during the minutes allotted for homeroom period, (and occasionally in the halls) I feel thot each one of them possesses some distinct quality thot makes him on important and on exceptional person. Due to some bod breaks they finished the season starting two sophomores as forwards, Bruce Tindell, Kevin Largin and a junior guard Dave Jones. In the bright spots were Lionel Worrell (Dr. L) and Henry Jenkins (Cisco Kid). Worrell at center scored an average of twenty points per game and pulled off close to fifteen rebounds. Jenkins hit about 18.5 points per game ond played some pretty solid defense. Coach Art Salley should be a little happier next year because all but three men will be returning. Goodbye,’' from The Cisco Kid and Dr. L. Grtg Sp n r 99 Bowling Team The West Side Varsity Bowling Team is ot this writing finishing up the second round and fighting for a trophy. There are eight high schools in the competition and the tournament includes all ten members of each team, playing against others in his or her average grouping. This is called a singles tournament and trophies are awarded to the winner of each group. This year was the first time ever that Newark has hod varsity bowling competition. It's success has proven its worth and will probably be a permanent sport in the Newark School System. Standing l-R, Cooch Mr. G trino; B. dark, G. Robinton; I. War ; kneeling k, W. Smith; C. Singleton The Lamp Staff members have been performing tedious duties toward the production of this book for much longer than most people realize. The staff began work this post August of 1972 and their work will not be completed until all books hove reoched the hands of those who have purchased them. Because the necessory and orduous hours were not performed by enough students for this year's publication of The Lamp, several ideas in this book have evolved from the thoughts of two or three people. It was really hard to do the best job possible in capturing the most precious moments of a senior's life. This is the sole purpose of the Lamp. It's supposed to glow throughout the years, alwoys shedding light on memories of the past. So in later years if you should come to your book and say to yourself, This book does not reflect any memories of my years of West Side,- stop again ond let this thought from the small 1 973 Lamp Staff run through your mind. If you were there, spending hours at the time after school, holidays, and much more of your leisure, it would have been possible for you to contribute any suggestions or ideas that you have hod. Since you did not, we the small stoff of 1973 took it upon ourselves to produce this book. At one time there was almost a question as to whether there would be a Lamp 1973. Well, there is. Call it what you may but first consider the conditions under which it hos been created. If in life you ever get another opportunity to express your talent in such a way, which you were able to, concerning the production of this book, we advise that you do. We wish to leave you with this last thought. We must work together as brothers or perish together as fools, which was the philosophy of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King.
