It is through the help of counselors that the student is able to single out his interests and abilities, to decide which subjects are best suited for him and his future, and to determine the direction of his future. Our counselors willingly help a student with any personal problem. Other services of the Guidance Department include counselor assignment to each class, job placement service, sponsorship of the National Honor Society, college and scholarship information, and the administration of the College Entrance Exams. The women who work in the Main Office also have an enormous task l cfore them. Each day these women must publish the notices and the absence lists. They also make certain that the transcripts of the students are sent out to the colleges or employers who require this information. Another task each year is to check the records of the seniors so that they have sufficient credits for graduation. They perform many other tasks which help the school to run smoothly. Our Mathematics Department is one of the finest in the city. The courses offered vary from Programmed Learning” in general math to the accelerated course in Algebra 5. SMSG Math is also taught at West Side. For several years it has lH en a practice of this department to offer an accelerated course to capable students. In the gym classes, pupils do exercises, practice physical fitness skills, and play such games as volleyball and basketball. When the weather is nice, the classes are held outside. This department also includes the Tennis Club, Bowling Club. Cheerleaders, Girl's Swimming Team, and all of the varsity and junior varsity sports. Our school Iras a fine library, and two of the finest librarians. Recently enlarged and remodeled, the library now contains 7,250 volumes. The library is open from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. A more recent feature of the library is the Ixxrk reviews given by students during the lunch periods. The librarians also supervise the audiovisual aides. World affairs play a large part in the lives of everyone. The History Department tries to keep the students aware of the present as well as the past. To do this, it offers such courses as I.R. and Economics in addition to U. S. and World History. This department sponsors the History Club and is about to publish a history magazine. The Business Department includes the students in the clerical, secretarial, and business patterns of study. These students are being prepared to enter related vocations upon graduation. Some of the subjects of this department are also taken by students in the college pattern. The Business Honor Society has been established to give recognition to business students with good records. West Side’s science courses include: General Science, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry’. Physics and Chemistry include lab work in which the student performs a variety of experiments. The science courses arc open to students in any pattern of study. The Tri-Sci Club and the Future Physicians Club are under the auspices of this department. Our school has an excellent Fine and Practical Arts Department. A wide variety of courses are offered in Art and Music. Foods, Clothing, Mechanical Drawing, and General Shop are the major components of the Practical Arts Department. Students in all patterns of study are encouraged to take at least one course in either Art or Music and one course in the Practical Arts.
