Students following the College Preparatory pattern are required to take at least two years, and preferably three, of a foreign language. In the modem language classrooms, emphasis is placed on the spoken language; in the I-atin class, however, stress is placet! on grammatical analysis. Students are taught not only the language, but also the history and customs of the people and the country. The first year of the language deals with the basic grammar and elementary reading. During the second year, the student is subjected to more difficult reading in larger amounts, and to the finer points in grammar. In the third year, the time is spent in reading the classics and masterpieces of the specific country. Many of the language teachers sponsor after-school clubs.
