But these past three years have been the most significant of our lives. During our high school days, we have evolved from frivolous and irresponsible children to mature and conscientious young adults. This evolution was dependent mostly upon ourselves in that we realized our goals and strived to attain our maximum potential. Yet we cannot proclaim to have reached this change entirely on our own. On the contrary, we needed the unselfish help both from our parents and from our teachers. It is evident that during these years, we spent most of our time either in school or with our schoolmates. Therefore, we were fortunate to have a faculty which consciously helped us to establish acceptable patterns of thinking and behavior. Our teachers also provided a sympathetic outlet for the emotional problems which arose during this period of maturation. They shared their experiences and knowledge with us and guided us along the right paths. Our teachers were aware of their responsibility in our development into well-rounded students, citizens and individuals. Fortunately many pleasures accompanied the hard work demanded by the academic life. We made lasting friendship. We participated in athletic activities, and we became part of the spirited student body. Thus in appreciation we, the Class of 1962, dedicate our yearbook to the most memorable three years of our lives, years filled with events and experiences that will never be forgotten. 3 ■ MRS. BERNICE EDELCREEK MR. GEORGE WEINSTEIN Senior Advisers The senior year at West Side is full of various activities designed to make the last year exciting and memorable. Without the helpful supervision of advisers these activities would be impossible to plan and carry out. The Class of June, 1962, has been fortunate in having three sympathetic and understanding senior advisers: Mrs. Bernice Edelcreek, Mrs. Pearl Meyer, and Mr. George Weinstein. With their tireless help, the senior class has successfully staged such affairs as the Senior Reception, the Senior Show, and the Prom. They have also supervised the collection of class dues which made these activities possible. Always available for experienced counsel to the members of the senior class, our advisers have been unstinting in their interest and devotion to our class. Mrs. Edelcreek, Mrs. Meyer, and Mr. Weinstein richly deserve the thanks and gratitude of every graduating senior. Our lardworking advisers preparing for the Senior Reception. I ( The student’s life is a hard road, but with the aid of the faculty, it has been made much easier. In the past three years, they have helped us whenever we needed help. For their patience and understanding. we owe the faculty our heartfelt gratitude. Administration and Faculty To the Class of MR. CHARLES BRODSKY Principal Most of you, tired of the discipline of compulsory formal education, will sigh with relief upon your being graduated from high school. All, however, will cherish the memories of your years at West Side. To those who will continue your formal education in colleges throughout the country, I sincerely hope that we have helped prepare you for a successful college life. To those who will seek employment, I wish you the very best of luck. The employment market is crowded. However, there is always a job for the person with a skill. We have trained your mind as best we could; it is your responsibility now to train your hands so that you have a skill to offer a prospect employer. I sincerely wish all of you Godspeed and success. MR. ROBERT LETT June, 1962... My feelings toward this graduating class are especially warm since we came here together in the fall of 1959. These have been exciting and full years both for you as students and me as principal. I must admit to you now how flattered I have always felt at your rapt attention when I have spoken words of advice to you at our assemblies. Please accept this last bit of advice. You are entering the adult world at a rather wonderful time in history. Scientific advances in space and medicine are coming with increased rapidity. Higher education can be had by all who want it. Jobs are available and employers are anxious for the skills and workmanlike habits you have learned here at West Side. If there are many problems still to be solved, be happy that as a citizen in a democracy you have an opportunity to help your countrymen solve them. Accept the best wishes of all the faculty and myself for a happy, interesting and successful future. CHARLES BRODSKY R. A. Not Pictured: Miss Mazeika, A Faculty ol Warmth and Understanding Every student in West Side is required to take English throughout his stay. Me must pass every course to lx eligible for graduation. Each required course includes the following work: Literature, grammar, composition, spelling, punctuation, speech, library work, reading improvement, and vocabulary improvement. In addition to the required English courses, many elective courses are offered. Pupils from any grade level are permitted to take these elective courses which include: Creative English, Journalism, Dramatics, and Speech. They are designed to develop the students’ abilities in the fields of writing, acting and directing, and public speaking. The English Department sponsorship includes the Drama-teers, the Westonian Editorial Staff, and the Annual American Shakespeare Festival Trip to Stratford, Connecticut. The Yearbook, the FTA, and Debate Club are also the concerns of the department. West Side’s Foreign I-anguage Department offers courses front the I itin of the ancient Romans to the present-day French, Spanish, Italian, and Russian languages. Students following the College Preparatory pattern are required to take at least two years, and preferably three, of a foreign language. In the modem language classrooms, emphasis is placed on the spoken language; in the I-atin class, however, stress is placet! on grammatical analysis. Students are taught not only the language, but also the history and customs of the people and the country. The first year of the language deals with the basic grammar and elementary reading. During the second year, the student is subjected to more difficult reading in larger amounts, and to the finer points in grammar. In the third year, the time is spent in reading the classics and masterpieces of the specific country. Many of the language teachers sponsor after-school clubs. This department also includes the Tennis Club, Bowling Club. Cheerleaders, Girl's Swimming Team, and all of the varsity and junior varsity sports. Our school Iras a fine library, and two of the finest librarians. Recently enlarged and remodeled, the library now contains 7,250 volumes. The library is open from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. A more recent feature of the library is the Ixxrk reviews given by students during the lunch periods. The librarians also supervise the audiovisual aides. World affairs play a large part in the lives of everyone. The History Department tries to keep the students aware of the present as well as the past. To do this, it offers such courses as I.R. and Economics in addition to U. S. and World History. This department sponsors the History Club and is about to publish a history magazine. West Side has an extensive guidance program. It is through the help of counselors that the student is able to single out his interests and abilities, to decide which subjects are best suited for him and his future, and to determine the direction of his future. Our counselors willingly help a student with any personal problem. Other services of the Guidance Department include counselor assignment to each class, job placement service, sponsorship of the National Honor Society, college and scholarship information, and the administration of the College Entrance Exams. The women who work in the Main Office also have an enormous task l cfore them. Each day these women must publish the notices and the absence lists. They also make certain that the transcripts of the students are sent out to the colleges or employers who require this information. Another task each year is to check the records of the seniors so that they have sufficient credits for graduation. They perform many other tasks which help the school to run smoothly. Our Mathematics Department is one of the finest in the city. The courses offered vary from Programmed Learning” in general math to the accelerated course in Algebra 5. SMSG Math is also taught at West Side. For several years it has lH en a practice of this department to offer an accelerated course to capable students. The Math Club and the Math Honors are sponsored by the Mathematics Department. OFFICE STAFF Mrs. Giffoniello; Miss Levine; Mrs. Beers; Mrs. Johnes. A Friend in Heed Now, girls, arc you sure that’s what you want? MR. HERMAN KAPNER Counselor Mr. Kapner, our guiding light, served as an inspiration to all of us. We looked to him for the past three years to help us throughout our high school career and to guide us toward the future. He helped us during our first days at West Side when we needed someone to turn to for support. The many hours that he spent with each of us in the selection of courses that would lead to our goals in life will never be forgotten. We felt free to bring any of our problems to Mr. Kapner with the knowledge that he would try his best to give us a solution. Of course, we found that we needed Mr. Kapner most in our senior year when the prospect of the future loomed before us. At this, the crucial period of our lives, he gave unstintingly of his time and effort. No words can express our deep appreciation for his wonderful help. Is it really that Ixul? 11 Carol Rosenbach President Class Officers The greatest task of the senators, as they will agree, was collecting money; first dues, then the senior show tickets, and finally the Prom bids. In addition, they represented their homerooms in various matters concerning the welfare of the senior class. Their many efforts have not been unnoticed. They have a right to be proud of the success of our class because they helped to create this success. SENIOR SENATORS Front Row: Diane Davis, Nlerlinc Webb, Linda Zimmerman, Jeanette Wolff, Eleanor Herkner. Back Row: Barbara Bakker, Richard Meimen, Frank Griscti, Kenneth Boehringer. Lenny Zen-natti, Joan Kaufmann, Marianne Pennell. Theresa Lcmke Vice President In May of 1961, four girls were elected to lead and guide the class of June, 1962. These girls, of course, are the class officers. They have worked hard and have spent many long hours planning and helping to carry out the will of the senior class. They participated on every committee and in some cases they led them. The Officers' job does not cease after graduation. It will be their responsibility to organize class reunions years from now. Their past and future efforts will not be unsatisfying, for they will take pride in knowing that they helped our class to function as a unit. YEARBOOK COMMITTEE Even' afternoon the yearbook committee could be seen working diligently on the yearbook. Under the expert guidance of Mr. Wacker, Pam Volpe, Editor-in-Chief, Linda Zimmerman, Literary Editor, Donna Renna, Art Editor, and Irene Tramutola, Secretarial Editor, managed to direct the energy of the group into creating a yearbook that we all can be proud of. Arranging the materials and thinking of witty sayings were just part of the tremendous task which faced the yearbook committee. But after the hard work, we can look back and rememl er the many good times we shared. LITERARY COMMITTEE With the increased amount of copy in our yearlx ok, the Literary Committee, has had a tremendous amount of work. After the layouts were finished, pages were assigned to each committee member. Copy had to be written, captions created, and deadlines met. Very often, members were required to remain after school to complete their pages and to help with unassigned pages. EDITORS Sitting: Irene Tramutola. Secretarial Editor; Pam Volpe, Editor-in-Chief. Following the instructions of Art Editor, Donna Henna, the group selected pictures to be used and sketched drawings which would represent our class theme, the Roaring 20’s. After many hours of hard work, seeing the finished product will give them a personal satisfaction each and every time they open this yearbook to reminisce about their three years at West Side. SECRETARIAL COMMITTEE Click, click, the sounds of the typewriters could l e heard in room 207 every day as the secretarial committee worked busily to type our yearbook. Pictures of 1959 As FRESHMEN we were the upper-classmen of our respective junior high schools. Many of our present friends were unknown to us. We were exuberant with the prospect of graduation and the thrill of coming to West Side. 1960 In 1960 we were referred to as the lowly SOPHOMORES, and such things as elevator and swimming pool passes were sold to us by the almighty seniors. Many girls were elected to the cheerleading and twirling squads, and boys were chosen for the athletic teams. 1961 Our JUNIOR year was marked by our admittance to the Group Assembly, our 11B class trip and the creation of the prom committee. It was during this year also, that Vailsburg High School was established, and we lost many of our friends and teachers. 1962 That wonderful SENIOR year! Irvington’s defeat by West Side at the Thanksgiving game topped the football season, and many parties were given to celebrate the great victory. A Senior Reception, “The Roaring 20’s,” was given to the Senior As. “Out of the Frying Pan,” our senior show, was a smashing success. We were treated to a delightful evening by the Class of January 1963. The Chanticler was the setting for our unforgettable Senior Prom. As we graduated, we looked back at our years at West Side as the most memorable and joyful years of our lives. 70 A DAY IN SCHOOL It is our purpose in this section to record for posterity a day in the life of the seniors in West Side Hit'll School. Of course, your day may he a lot different, hut we are offering a composite picture of the Class of June, I !K 2. The Day Begins—as the first rays of sunlight slowly creep oxer the windowsills, the sounds of awakening are heard in the bedrooms of West Side’s finest. Alarm clocks ring shrilly, as mothers try desperately to waken their sleeping seniors. On about the fourth or fifth try signs of life begin to appear from under the mass of covers. Here we go again! Stop in the name of the law. The rested and refreshed students begin to make their way haltingly to the kitchen. Here they eat a nourishing breakfast of anything they can lay their hands on. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a bowl of cereal or a tunafish sandwich, it’s food enough to keep going until lunch. After this energy-building meal, the typical senior heads for his bedroom to start getting dressed. When it comes to female seniors, this is a long and arduous process, encompassing getting dressed, putting on makeup, and, most important part of all, combing the hair. First it has to be teased, then combed into place, and finally sprayed with hair spray till it is so stiff it wouldn’t move even in a tornado. Boys are not immune from this hair-combing disease either. After all, seniors are by nature a conceited bunch, and they must spend a great deal of time making a good impression. Did you hear? . .. The Day Begins.. The weekend's over-Monday’s here. Always the girls’ first assignment—getting pretty. The usual mode of transportation for the annointed ones is the good old bus system. Of course, there are the hardy souls who walk. West Side offers many activities for early risers, or those who suffer from insomnia. Anyone walking around the 3rd floor of West Side in the morning is sure to see throngs of seniors gathered outside their homerooms. When it comes to knowing the latest gossip, nothing beats listening to these morning conversations. At the sound of the 8:18 bell, even more kids begin to hurry into their homerooms, and at 8:20, the mad dash to beat the late bell takes place. loafing. Late again. Sing along with Mr. Martin. 73 A friend in need is . . . The first period finds the Class of ’62 scattered in many directions on their way to classes. Throughout the next four periods, the seniors are involved in studying everything from English to International Relations. As the time for the lunch periods near, our teachers find it increasingly hard to hold our attention as visions of food drift through our heads. When the bell for any of the lunch periods finally does ring, BEWARE!! You’re likely to be trampled to death by a senior on his way to either the cafeteria or one of the luncheonettes in the neighborhood. Food is very important to anyone, but particularly to a senior. After all, one does need strength to talk, chew gum and pass notes. Of course, some energy is expended in studying, but only the barest minimum. A lunch period is not only for eating. It’s also time for catching up on the latest news, the type that isn’t carried in the morning bulletin. For some, it’s time to get ahead in homework, or to catch up. My, aren’t they quiet? It’s lunchtime at the Chanticler. Some of these eager senior As are on their way to the mob scene at the lockers, but more likely, they are heading towards some afterschool activity. As in all senior classes, there are many committee meetings after school planning our social events. Of course, there are the special seniors who receive the honor of membership in the “2:25 Club.” Teams also entice many of the senior boys. Practice for games, races and meets cause many students to burn the midnight oil. Watch the birdie! The Chem lab offers a chance for budding young scientists to try out their theories. Someone's out of step. 75 After this strenuous day, the members of the class of ’62 have just about enough energy to struggle home and yell, “What’s for dinner?” and plop down in a chair with the funnies. After doing homework, not too much though, the typical senior settles down to watch his favorite TV show. The day is ended when he wearily makes his way to bed to get some rest for the coming day. After all, being a senior has its responsibilities; having the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors looking up to you constantly is no easy job, and a person has to be well rested in order to bear this burden of being an upperclassman at West Side. West Siders gather in the Main Office to sec the latest notices. Rah! Rah! TWIRLERS Filled with school spirit and enthusiasm, our twirlers can be seen at various school affairs displaying their skill to the tunes of our band, led by the majorette, Pam Volpe. Our short-skirted girls in green and white work very hard to reserve their places on the squad. Maintaining a “B” average is one of the most difficult tasks of a twirler because much of her free time is spent at practice. She is expected to twirl at football games, sport assemblies, and parades. In the spring, she becomes a teacher in order to prepare the underclassmen to take her place on the squad after graduation. The graduating twirlers are: Barbara Bakker, April Blakeslee, Melinda Bloomfield, Carol Enin, Ingrid Lofgren, Paula Tartaglia, and Pam Volpe, majorette. Cheerieading Captains. Not only postmen carry on in all kinds of weather. 79 SENIOR CHEERLEADERS Mary Lou Priccadnte, Donna Renna. Lorraine Hill, Annie Sheffield, Barbara Davis. Cheerleading Try-outs. Work at the beginning leads to honor at the end. The honor of being a West Side cheerleader is surpassed only by the great pleasure one gets from taking part on the squad. Each cheerleader has to be thoroughly dedicated because she must do her very best to represent West Side at sports affairs throughout the year. Being a cheerleader involves much work, very tiring practice sessions and giving up all available free time. I .ike the twirlcrs, the cheerleaders have a “try-out pcri xl in which they train any girl who may be interested in becoming one of the squad. The academic rating of the group is also important; therefore, each girl must maintain at least a “C” average. This year eight girls arc graduating from the squad. They are: Barbara Davis, Diane Davis, Lorraine Hill, Jean Ann Mullins, Mary Lou Priccadnte, Donna Renna, Annie Sheffield, and Lillian Walker. 80 MAJORETTES Pam Volpe, majorette; Chris Schwartz and Janice Howes, co-majorettes. Morale Boosters McNamara is not her name but she’s the leader of our band! West Side is very proud of the girls who care enough to represent her; the cheerleaders and twirlers. The members of each squad work hard in order to keep school spirit and enthusiasm high. There arc many things being done by the cheerleaders that most of West Side doesn't realize. I ast year, for example, the girls decided they needed new uniforms. Since there was no way to buy them, there was only one thing left to do. The members of the squad bought the materials which were needed and made the green and white corduroy jumpers they are so often seen in. The twirlers, too, had a uniform problem. However, instead of making their own outfits, they held a dance, sold boosters, and through the help of gifts received, they were able to buy the uniforms that were worn for the first time last season. Besides being present at school sport affairs, the twirlers and cheerleaders must take part in parades. The preparation for these parades is long and tiring for the girls must learn to march while performing their routines. Quite often the parades arc held on very warm days and the area to be covered is long. These parades are held mainly in order to celebrate a holiday, therefore the girls must give up their free day in order to march. West Side’s prettiest, peppiest girls. Like any other sport, tryouts are held and thus the team is selected. They meet every day from 3:20 p.m. until the coaches feel the boys have practiced sufficiently. Vailsburg or West Side Park is the scene of this daily workout. On extremely rainy days, however, the team is permitted to practice in the school’s gym. Head coach Tom Higgins and assistants, Vince Mistretta, Anthony DeAugustino, and Jerry Greco, see to it that the boys practice hard and long at such skills as kicking, passing, and tackling in preparation for Saturday afternoon. Although the team finished the season with a record of two wins and six losses, the “Green” boasted a twelve-six victory at the annual Thanksgiving Day football game. Many underclassmen will have the opportunity to play varsity football next season due to the loss of West Side’s many graduating seniors. All members of the Roughrider team like this sport. Many of them feel that football builds character, gives self-respect and self pride, and establishes a feeling of sportsmanship. One senior Phil Nlongiovi adds an interesting point of view: “Football is almost as good as girls.” Co-Captain Alex Jarmalowich. All those boys wishing to become part of the team try out on a designated day. The coach, Walter Bakum, observes the boys and selects those who he feels will most aid the team. Each lx y that is chosen, then becomes the proud possessor of the Green” uniform. •The boys maintain their basketball skills by constant practice during the season. The team may be seen every day, practicing many hours in the boys’ gym in preparation for future games. Through comments and criticisms made by Coach Bakum, the team gains important knowledge which results in victories. With the help of its co-captains, Mark Feldman and Jesse Banks, and the many other capable players, West Side experienced a successful season. Out of seventeen regular games that were played, West Side won eleven and lost six. Tournament play added to the excitement of the season. One of the tournaments in which West Side’s basketball team participated was the Christmas Tournament. In order to be eligible for this tournament, a school basketball team must win at least half of all the games it has played. West Side easily came into this category. Unfortunately, however, the first game of the tournament that we played was lost to Clifford Scott. This automatically eliminated us from further competition. We were then invited to participate in New Jersey State Tournament. Our entry depended upon team ability and West Side topped Summit in the first game. The second game, however, was not quite as successful. Cranford managed to win over the Rough Riders. This loss finished our part in the tournament for the season. West Side is now in the process of losing some of its valuable players. Mark Feldman, Bill Gazell, Jesse Banks, Holton Smith, Dave Helmuth, and Howard Nelson are graduating seniors who will not be part of the team next season. Rough Riders leap for two more points. This year each meet included the 40 yard free style, 100 yard butterfly, 200 yard free style, 100 yard backstroke. Our team’s record this season was seven wins and three losses. In order to receive a varsity letter in the June sports assembly, a Merman has to earn twenty points. These points are gained through the races. The baskets were camouflaged with the aid of colorful crepe-paper streamers, and cutouts of heads, while the windows were festooned with huge “drapes” of paper. Practically all of the senior members appeared in a mood of party gaiety. While the boys were handsome in 1962 style suit, some of their feminine classmates came to the Reception arrayed in flapper costumes, consisting of fringed dresses, headbands, and colorful garters. Music, played excellently, was provided by our own Mr. Esposito and his combo. The most popular dances of the evening were the “Twist,” Bunny Hop,” “Cha Cha,” and, of course, the “Charleston”—a “Roaring Twenties” favorite. As the more ener- Good Time The Big Moment, the coronation of the King and Queen. getic seniors performed these lively dances, most of the teachers, present in a chaperoning capacity, contented themselves by watching their students. One spirited exception was Mr. Friedman, who, along with Mrs. Friedman, performed a “mean twist. The cafeteria was the scene of much laughter and conversation as out tired and thirsty seniors gathered there for cakes and chatter. Refreshments were served by Junior A hostesses. The climax of the evening was the crowning of the King and Queen of the Reception. The guests flocked excitedly about the microphone as the names were being announced, since the selection had been a well-guarded secret. The King and Queen were crowned by the Senior B class president and vice president. The lucky two Senior As to be selected were John Petrock, and Barbara Mathis. After the ceremony was performed, the dancing continued as before. 103 The band played on. As the music plays softly, the lights go down low. Chubby Checker couldn't do it better. Eat, drink and be merry ! Everyone was still rarin’ to go” when the band played the last dreamy dance. Many of our high-spirited Senior B boys secured decorations as souvenirs for the girls. So ended one of the nicest social events at West Side this year. THE CLASS OF JUNE 1962 West Side Htgk Sckool presents “OUT OF THE FRYING PAN” Friday Evening, April 13, 1962 — 8:30 P. The riotous incidents which take place in this apartment would tickle anyone’s funnybonc, just as it did in our auditorium on April 13th and 14th. The Francis Swann creation was directed by Rhoda Caroll and Arnold Hruska. The play was a rousing success. The auditorium rocked with laughter, as the patrons of the class of June ’62 were provided with the most fantastic show that ever hit West Side. Even a busy actor has time for love. ... and into And don’t you dare spill a drop. Slam! Bang! Arnold!! The preparation of the show proceeded at a hectic, or should we say, frantic pace. The stage crew spent many, long, hard hours after school making, painting and erecting the sets. The work proceeded at a rapid rate, despite the kibitzing of the baseball and track teams. The final results were terrific. “Out of the Frying Pan” couldn’t have been the fabulous success it was without Nick Ruggiero, our wonderful stage manager. No one ever had trouble hearing him, or his orders!! The senior show couldn’t be mentioned without thinking of Pat Martin, Nick’s able assistant. She was always ready with the details that no one else thought of. PRODUCTION staff Temper, temper. STACK MAXACU AMtSTAST STACK HASACa SKX KIKCIIMO FAT HAMTVl cosmos FAIMTVtC Dim. Cm, Ah,. lm. Great Day Carol Rosen bach, president of our class, receives Lamp from graduating president, Patricia Natale. Senior students are honored by the P.T.S.A. Nostalgia, reverence, and pride marked the traditional Senior Day Assembly at West Side High. Recognition of Senior As who had served our school in the form of clubs or other extracurricular participation was bestowed by sponsors or members of the club or activity. Senior A students who had attained scholastic excellence were not neglected, cither. Both our PTSA and the West Side Chapter of the National Society presented tokens of recognition for our academically bright students. The traditional Lamp-Passing Ceremony highlighted our Senior Day. As has been done so many times in the past years, the Lamp, symbol to West Siders of knowledge and service, was passed from the hands of the present graduating class into the care of ours, the Class of June, 1962. We, in turn, looked forward to the day when we would perpetuate the chain of tradition by presenting the Lamp to the next class in line. Service Awards arc given to the deserving seniors. in the Morning Two of the most important honors, the Mayor Carlin and the Bamberger Awards, were presented to graduating seniors Robert Kowtko and Nancy Cohen. Respect and admiration from both teachers and fellow classmates for a job well done the past three years at West Side were conveyed in the bestowing of these honors. Finally, the long-awaited moment occurred. After saying good-bye and wishing success to the graduating class, we, the June, 1962 Class, marched into the auditorium and took our place in the front rows of seats. We were now Senior As, the elite” of West Side, and the group from which the other grades expect initiative and leadership. The singing of the Alma Mater took on a new meaning to us, as we realized how much we had learned at West Side, and how much we had yet to learn before we would leave her doors for the final time.
