PRESENTED BY THE CLASS Of JfMUflRy 1 955 • UJEST SIDE HIGH SCHOOL NEWARK. NEW JERSEY School Song In the morning light and evening fall. Through all the days of coming years— In times when glowing futures call— In hearts with laughter and with tears. Our love for you will never die. Oh. Alma Mater. West Side High. Our love for you will never die. Oh. Alma Mater. West Side High. This love we have for you has grown More bright than any treasured gold. It deepens through each friend we’ve known. Each truth that to our hearts is told. Within the shelter of your walls. Within the rooms where wisdom calls. Our love for you will never die. Oh. Alma Mater. West Side High. Though we have need to wander far. Close in our hearts your name will be. Your goodness, like a radiant star. Will rise with every memory. And having these sweet dreams of you. We shall remember and be true. Our love for you will never die. Oh. Alma Mater. West Side High. In morning light and evening fall. Through all the years of coming years. In times when glowing futures call. In hearts with laughter and with tears. Our love for you will never die. Oh. Alma Mater. West Side High! Our love for you will never die. Oh. Alma Mater. West Side High! 2 francis B. Snavely PRINCIPAL “Thou dids t mould us dear old State into men. into men.” The quotation is from the Alma Mater of Pennsylvania State University. We at West Side hope that we have helped to mould you during the past three years. The future holds the answer to our success. Your presence here means our work is ending. To a great degree yours is beginning. We think we have helped you. Your characters and material achievements will be the answer. We have surrounded you with the wisdom of the ages. We have exacted a measure of response. We have moulded the exterior into reasonable compliance with the demands of society. The deep aim of education is not just compliance but a change in the individual so inner acceptance and motivation can replace exterior compulsion. Only your life can show whether we have succeeded. m Edgar K. Damson VICE PRINCIPAL 5 in flppfifciniion to • ■ a Esther HI. Horton William D. Herron We. the Graduating Class of January 1955. wish here to thank our two advisers for their hard work and their many tribulations in making our senior year a successful one. Through their perseverance and diligence, we have been able to enjoy those activities and items which are a part of the senior year. In spite of our small class and its accompanying problems, we have still had those things which seem so important to a senior class. Without these two friends, we would have been unable to accomplish all this, so here we wish to voice our appreciation and gratitude to our class advisers. Mrs. Norton and Mr. Herron. CLASS ADVISEfiS ‘ to Our faculty The graduates of January 1955 wish to convey their gratitude to the faculty of West Side. Without their guidance and teaching our three years in West Side would have been more difficult. Through their hard work, we have acquired knowledge which should always be a part of our life. They have guided us over an important period in our lives and we would like here to show our sincerest thanks and appreciation to every member of the faculty. .. .June 2i, 1954 yearbook Committee WILLIAM D. FUTURE DREAMS I think that I shall never see A teacher who will look at me And ask me to indulge in some Refreshing, tasty Beechnut gum. Or say at my arriving late. “I understand you had a date , Or if my theme is not on time. He'd smile and say. Oh, that’s no crime. And when they send a cut slip small He’d tear it up and say. That’s all. Dreams like these I'll let fly by 'Cause I’m attending West Side High. On that day. we received the joy. the responsibility, and the dignity of becoming seniors. These honors were passed to us during West Side's traditional Lamp Ceremony . On that day. we had a foretaste of what we could expect in the few months of school remaining for us as we witnessed the honors, awards, scholarships, and merits being given to the preceding graduates. Having had an impressive taste of seriousness that morning, we were ready for our share of fun and merriment that evening. After much careful planning and ‘money business”. the Senior Reception became a pleasure-filled reality. Even members of the faculty, usually so dignified, let their hair down for the affair. The theme of the decorations was the circus. Sideshows added to the social merriment and ever so slightly to our treasury. We had a weight guesser. a monkey, a fat lady, and even palm readers, all of whom in the daytime were our teachers. Wanna buy a booster? was the familiar refrain echoed and re-echoed through the halls, as the fall term began. Practically everyone, everywhere was encountered during the next few weeks by the ambitious seniors on their financial mission. Despite the small size of the class, only 1 13. the task of raising money for our projects was brought under control successfully through the cooperation of our patrons. More planning and work followed for. of course, we had to have a senior play. Stage Door by Edna Ferber and George Kaufman was chosen, not only as a good play, but one well suited to our needs. About a quarter of the class participated in the play either as actors or stage hands. Under the careful and understanding direction of Mr. John Freimann. the rehearsals were under way. Instead of sheep, we were counting our Senior Show tickets. The play was a success, with each actor deserving an Oscar. Our quiet classroom routine was again interrupted by plans—plans for one of the most important events of the senior year, the prom. This colorful event took place at Hotel Douglas on January 14. 1955. The long-awaited Senior Day and Senior Reception were held on January 24. 1955. Even more important, but not without its note of sadness, was Commencement Day. January 26. 1955. This long-awaited event opened a new door of life for us. We can never forget all the joy and perhaps a bit of sorrow we have experienced during these past three years. By the same token, we shall never forget our unselfish parents, teachers, and friends who have guided us. On behalf of the graduating class of January 1955. we would like to thank personally and appreciatively our counselor, Miss Eleanor Maurer, who has always extended her help and given us advice. Of course, we will never be able to thank our class advisers. Mrs. Esther Norton and Mr. William Herron enough. Without their guidance and constant work, no event recorded here would have been possible. We have many wonderful memories of West Side friends to carry with us throughout the rest of our lives. 78 ELIZETTE PASCOAL class hull fine TfsiArntni We. the Class of January 1955. being in as sound a mind as seniors ever are. do hereby proclaim this to be our last will and testament. To those we leave behind, we bequeath: 1. To the succeeding generations of classes at West Side we leave as many happy experiences as we have had in this school. 2. To all the underclassmen, we leave buses 31. 54. 5. and 6. upon whose punctuality our lives and fates have depended. 3. To the less diligent among our followers, we bequeath the 2:30 bell which has had such a soothing sound of liberation for us as we sat nervously counting the last minutes of our school day. 4. For Mrs. Norton, we request a leave of absence to recover from the worries brought on by our activities. 5. To Mr. Herron, we leave a request for a leave of absence to rest from work as co-adviser to the class and adviser for our yearbook. 6. To Mr. Shampansky. we leave a set of our broken mirrors for the girls in his future classes. 7. To Miss Maurer, we bequeath the latest book on adolescent psychology so that she may understand others even better than she saw through us. 8. To Mr. Dawson, we leave a smile and a helping hand for his work of scheduling. 9. To Mr. Snavely. we solemnly bequeath our love and a tie rack for the seniors yet unborn. In witness whereof we have hereinto set our hand and seal this twenty-sixth day of January, nineteen hundred and fifty-five. The Graduates fRIfflDS NIW ClTV MINTING COMPANY UNION CITY. N J
