The LAMP Presented the Class of January 1954 WEST SIDE HIGH SCHOOL Newark, New Jersey Praqer for Peace May Thy will come to annul wars and the shedding of blood from the universe and to extend a great and wondrous peace throughout the world. May it come to pass that never again shall one people raise the sword against another. Through our faith in Thee let the arts of war be cast from the minds of men. Let all the peoples of the earth recognize and know this, Thy innermost truth: that we are not come into this world for quarrel and division, nor for hate and jealousy, contrariness and bloodshed but to live in the peace of Thy blessings and bounty, to honor Thy name and that of the goodness of all mankind. We ask Thee to let Thy presence be felt and Thy counsel lx? heard in the assembly of nations that man through Thy divine intervention shall seek to eradicate the scourge of war from the face of the earth. Amen. FACULTY Francis B. Snavelij PRINCIPAL When a student enters the massive Rate leadinR to the Yard of Harvard University, he reads on the archway of the gate the words: “ENTER TO GROW IN WISDOM . When lie leaves the Yard, on the reverse side of the archway of the gate these words meet his eyes: “DEPART TO BETTER SERVE THY COUNTRY AND THY KIND”. Our official records at West Side show that many members of the Class of January 1954 have grown in wisdom as indicated by academic achievement. But school grades arc not alone a measure of achievement. Many of you have excelled in extra-curricular activities which contribute to the wisdom of community living. As you leave the portals of West Side, we know that you will serve loyally your country, as have those West Siders who have gone before you. It is our hope and belief that in the more personal sphere of our community life you will contribute to the happiness and the welfare of your neighbors and fellow citizens. 4 Edgar K. Dawson VICE PRINCIPAL 5 CLASS Harriet Shannpanski) We, the graduating Class of January 1954, give sincerest thanks to Mrs. Harriet Shampansky and Dr. Leo Litsky for the guidance, help and patience they have shown us in our last terms at West Side. To be the guiding hands of a movement is a job in itself. To undertake this task and per- ADVISERS Leo Litsktj form it to the utmost is many times as difficult. And so, Mrs. Shampansky and Dr. Litsky, we again say thank you, hoping that you have received your reward in seeing your plans and labors turn into realities which the Class of January 1954 will never forget.
