Jhe m oj Janaafiy 1953 Pnesenls. . . 9West iJe fiiqh School Qtewati, nicw Jeisey ION We. the Class of January. 1953 wish to dedicate this, our yearbook, to a great many people. First of all to our many wonderful teachers, whose hard work and earnest efforts to teach us all they knew, can not go without note. To our principal. Mr. Snavely. without whose cheerful guidance and firm discipline our days at West Side would have been impossible. To our parents who. by the very fact that they are our parents and our friends, have helped us over many a milestone in our high-school life. To our advisers. Mrs. Kaplan and Mr. Dudas. whose help in our 4A term can never be forgotten or repaid. Last but certainly not least to our teacher and yearbook adviser. Miss Clarke, without whose extreme patience and guiding hand we would never have accomplished this at all. We all hold the sincere hope that the future graduating classes will all appreciate their help as much as we did. 2 j onqnafalatione . . . You have run the race and reached the goal. Two hundred, seventy-six registered as 2B's in February 1950. Today we have one hundred, fifty-five in the 4A Class. The road has been difficult, but you have persevered. You have earned the right to be proud of your achievement. Let us take a peek at the future. Some twenty-five or thirty per cent of you will continue to be students. The rest are entering upon a vocational career. In either case, you are citizens. You have all the rights and responsibilities of citizens. Assume both in full measure. Your rights include the A Freedoms of the Bill of Rights, but remember, the privilege of Liberty must be won anew by each generation. Guard your integrity and your self respect zealously. Meet your responsibilities fairly and yours will be a satisfying life. The happiness of candy and ice-cream, I cannot promise you. but. if you walk upright in Spirit, with courage to do your daily tasks and with maturity in your contacts with your family and your fellow men, I can promise you contentment. I would not seek more for you. 5 We, the Class of January 1953. would like to thank Mrs. Kaplan and Mr. Dudas. our senior class advisers, for the extensive work they did in preparing us for graduation. Their tireless efforts, extreme patience, and continuous work are what made our graduation possible. Without their help, many obstacles could not have been overcome, and many pleasant memories would have been lost. Work such as they have done, in an effort to guide and prepare us for 6 graduation, can never be repaid, so we are offering to them our utmost thanks and appreciation. The guiding hand, which they so fully provided, has enabled us to reach our desired goal, and made us ready to go out into the world surrounding our school. Their time and efforts have been deeply appreciated, and we trust that the future will prove that they have not been wasted 7 WALTER DUDAS 07Homenom jfeac iefis ommeticiat tejaitment Jjanquaqe $)efat ment (Mathematics $)efia itment f)ejantment I to fiecia! 52 uijecis )efat men guidance efaitment Jjamfi Committees SENIORS Alfonso Joseph Adinolfi 256 Fairmount Avenue Vice President of Italian Club; Library Club; Current Problems Club; Decorating Committee; Senior Class Cbtcf Auditor. To study hard and learn. We buckled down right to the grind, Good marks we vowed to earn. We tried SO hard that first long term, To learn all that we could; Through every test we'd always squirm. Our grades were more than good!! The next term we returned to school With not SO strong a yearning. To study hard became a rule. Ambition was still burning. Term after term we tried so hard To make our class the best. We joined all clubs and earned good grades, Did bettor than the rest. Sometimes our early hopes grew weak And then our teachers all Reached out their hands to guide us right And save us from our fall. We leave this book for all to see What we had come to do. Read every page and you can judge What we have said to you. WEST SIDE HIGH SCHOOL Newark, New Jersey Joyce Batitto To Joyce Batitto. who was a member of our class, we. the Class of June 1953. dedicate our yearbook. The Lamp. There are so many things which cannot be ex- pressed in mere words but we know that Joyce was a true sincere 1 riend for whose friendship we shall always be grate ful. We felt a deep sense of sorrow at her passing away. We do. therefore, dedicate our yearbook to the cherished memory of Joyce Batitto. and wish her eternal happiness. 2 M ill) S Jk £S Congratulations upon attaining your goal. Twelve long years, not counting kindergarten, have passed. Now. you stand on the threshold of a new life. You probably have a feeling of uncertainty now and then Be not troubled You should have learned that a firm approach to a problem leads to a satisfactory solution That is one of the intangibles you should have mastered. You should already have thought of tomorrow and another goal. Plan and work toward it and it can be attained. 4 Perhaps you have nostalgic feelings about leaving West Side. That is natural. But you felt the same way about leaving grammar school. We hope you will feel free to return to us to ask for advice, to seek encouragement, and to share your triumphs. Now, square your shoulders and. with zest in your soul, go forth to newer and greater worlds. Add new achievements to your successes here. 5 Eleanor R. Graduating seniors receive honors. Farewell speech by Michael DoAngclis. 122 The last assembly for t graduating seniors. V of the Lamp Passing Our Senior Advisers. Proud Seniors in their honorary scats. 123 We take our seats of honor. Mr. Snavely's congratulations. We leave as Senior A’s. We. the Graduating Class of June 1953 of West Side High School, in the City of Newark. County of Essex, and the State of New Jersey, being of almost sound but slightly weathered mind, do hereby promulgate the following as our LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT: To the 4B's. we leave all the honors and dignities of becoming 4A s. such as seats of honor at assembly, evacuating the gum from their mouths and placing it under the seats, uplifted noses, and other benefits to be accrued therefrom. To the Juniors, we bequeath the Chemistry Lab with all its attendant odors and tear-drawing devices, as an inspiration toward higher honors. To the Sophomores, we leave erasers, blackboards, text books, scrap baskets, lunchroom food, window poles, and the faculty of inoffensive teachers. To the Cafeteria we leave a bottle of Chlorophyll Air-Wick (Kills odors). and a French dictionary for the purpose of concealing vegetables, soups, potatoes. and meat with gravy, under fancy names. To our Janitors, many of whom have become our friends, we leave the institution. To the Faculty, we bequeath seekers after knowledge, and we fervently hope that very little aspirin will be needed. To our Yearbook Adviser. Miss Clarke, we leave one yearbook and all the buffoonery of the meetings to come. To our Senior Advisers. Mrs. Fabiano and Mr. Hill, their first experience as such, we leave our most sincere thanks and appreciation for their leadership and advice during our senior year. To the School, we leave . . . In witness whereof, we have hereunto affixed our mark and signature. CLASS OF JUNE 1953 % VALEDICTORY We learned a lot in these past years . . Not all in books we find, A way to choose our new career And how the path will wind. We'd like to thank with all our hearts Teachers who paved our way. We're leaving now, we hate to part, Farewell is ours to say. The time we spent, the work we've done Though labor bent, was all in fun. We thank our counselors one and all Without their help we'd surely fall. We leave the lamp a symbol strong To guide the future class; It's light directs the right from wrong It's memory holds us fast. Ntw CITY MINTING CO A A onion city, n i ?ss VI
