4 1 utyps f fJJj ZS6I dedication The 4A Class dedicates with great gratitude this yearbook to their advisers. Miss Catherine Culfimore and Mr. Sam Boyar. They encouraged us when we were downcast, and throughout the entire senior term, they did everything in their power to help us. and then some. Without their help, we would never have been able to put the Senior Reception, nor the Senior Show across, nor would we have been able to present the yearbook in its present form. THE JANUARY CLASS OF 1952 fall, Through all In morn Ting In morning light and evening fall, Through all the days of coming yea In times when glowing futures call-in hearts with laughter and with te Our love for you will never die, Oh, Alma Mater, West Side High. Our love for you will never die. Oh, Alma Mater, West Side High. This love we have for you has grown More bright than any treasured gold, It deepens through oach friend we've known Each truth that to our hearts is told. Within the shelter of your walls. Within the rooms where wisdome calls. Our love for you will never die. Oh, Alma Mater, West Side High. Though we have need to wander far Close in our hearts your name will be. Your goodness, like a radiant star, Will rise wth every memory, And having these sweet dreams of you We shall remember and be true. Our love for you will never die. In times when glowing futures call, In hearts with laughter and with tears, Our love for you will never die, Oh, Alma Mater, West Side High! Our love for you will never die, Oh, Alma Mater, West Side High! 4 c nancis 2 . navel} (plincifa Dear Graduates: Congratulations on your achievement in reaching your goal. Live up to the fine promise you have shown. The world may look a little upset and disturbed to you now. It is also a time of great events. Live your part up to the hilt. The papers forget the good service of thousands of public employees to parade the despicable failures of the few before us. The dishonesty of the few is a sad commentary on their moral standards. But let’s use what we learned in history. Has it not been the same after every war? War not only costs us lives and treasure. It despoils our moral and spiritual ideals as well. 6 ISJqak f - )dw$on Q ice spline if a It is good that we have a new generation of new citizens. You are this new generation. Hold to your ideals, work for decency in government and business. Start now, today. Accept this task of saving Democracy and save humanity from another thousand years of Dark Ages. Strengthen your characters by the best means you have, your Church. Look each day for the right decision that builds this character as surely as a mason builds the house, brick by brick. Good character and good citizenship come only froiti day by day building of high ideals. CATHERINE M. CULLIMORE Room 321A CHARLES W. The official documents, hidden in the protected archives of the main office, proclaimed in large print that we. the graduating class of January 1952. were SENIORS . . . To some it was quite an occasion: Imagine! Only one more year before we graduate. Many others felt no change: After all. we still have two terms to go. A number of social buds were alarmed at the fact: My goodness! The school can never have enough dances in one year to suit me. The working guys and gals thought: At last! In only a year. I can get a full-time job. The teachers recalled when we first came to West Side as sophomores and then sadly realized that they. too. were that much older. Yes. there were many opinions being passed around concerning the graduating class of January 1952. We were curious about who would be our class advisers. The matter was taken quite seriously by many students as various rumors. naming practically every teacher in school, passed from room to room. However, the issue was settled on April 25. when, on that date, the Westonian stated that our advisers would be Miss Catherine M. Cullimore and Mr. Sam Boyar. Of course, everyone said. I told you so . . .” Shortly after the announcement was made, the class held its initial meeting in the Boys' Gym. Sitting on the bleachers. 177 students were informed that they comprised one of the smallest graduating classes ever assembled at West Side. Here, we were introduced formally to Miss Cullimore. Mr. Boyar and Miss Helen Clarke. Miss Clarke informed us that she had made arrangements with Lorstan Studios in regard to having our pictures taken for the yearbook. The trio gave us tentative dates for our senior activities and began work on a project which would keep us busy for the rest of the year. The first of many problems which confronted our class and our newly-named advisers was the question of raising money. It was estimated that $2000 would be needed for the yearbook. $1200 for the class play, and $300 for the Senior Reception. These a-mounts. together with sundry other expenses, would bring the entire total to well over $4000. Fortunately, various methods had long been used by preceding classes toward raising said capital. Virtually the entire amount would be paid for by the selling of ads and boosters to interested parties throughout the city. Each student was required to sell $16 worth. The deadline for handing in all money was October 1. On September 26. only twelve students had paid in full. During this period, one of the busiest groups in school was the treasurers. Each one was in charge of a respective homeroom in regard to recording the amounts collected by each student. A rumor. undoubtedly started by a frustrated treasurer, stated that he was required to list the serial number of all one-dollar bills he received. The treasurers soon became quite adapt at answering such questions as “How much do I owe? , “Did you spell my name right? . “How much money did you get today and “What happens if I can't pay? Paraphrasing Winston Churchill, “Never has so much been owed by so many to so few! Our first senior activity was the organization of the Senor Reception. held in honor of the class of June 1951. The affair was scheduled for the evening of June 14. in the Girl's Gym with a group of capable students working together. The students did a standout job and must be commended for their efforts. The theme of the reception was The Carnival. To gain the mood of the occasion, large paper clowns and balloons adorned the walls and ceiling of the gym. The Mel Tones” dance band provided the entertainment as rhumbas and fox-trots prevailed. Refreshments, including “Cokes , ice cream, and cake were offered in the cafeteria. In the vernacular of the adolescent, “It sure was a swell evening . The two and one-half month long summer vacation came as a welcome pause to our work. During this period, we could rest, develop a sun-burn. and. in general, loaf—as long as we sold the required sixteen dollars’ worth of ads and boosters. It was a very invigorating task, walking from store to store, hoping the people we talked to had not been approached by a classmate. Various techniques were used with varying degrees of success. Applepolishing the neighbors proved an excellent means of selling. Appealing to the person's school spirit sometimes worked. Relatives could always be counted upon. A large number of them was a decided advantage in this situation. Every store in the vicinity was hopefully canvassed by would-be ad-seekers, as they had been for many years previous. Teen-agers who very rarely smiled broke out with a large grin when meeting a prospective customer. It was a very eventful summer. We came back in mid-September to find a number of changes around our sacred halls. For one. the Westonian office was moved from Room 213 to Room 317. The staff had all of twenty square feet of floor space at their command during their stay in 213. Un- fortunately the room was twenty feet long and one foot wide. The new headquarters is a great location. There are actually two windows. Of course, if it's hot. they’re open; and if they’re open, papers fly. and smoke billows in. If the windows are closed, the atmosphere soon resembles that of a turkish bath. Take your choice! Five of the six typewriters seem as if they had been dropped from the third floor into a vat of concentrated sulfuric acid. The one that does type is the one that continually misspells all names appearing in the paper. The other changes included the moving of the Guidance Department from Room 109 to Room 104 and 105. Room 105 was subdivided into three compartments. Miss Lewis's office (104) was moved to the old Westonian room. The secretarial practice room (105) was moved to 204. “Hey!, are you trying out for the senior show?’’ That question, in various forms, was quite popular during the days of the senior play selection. Father of the Bride, a three-act comedy, had been chosen and since many students were interested in receiving a part, competition was fierce. Mrs. Ruth Blank, who directed “Ten Little Indians’’ for the Class of June 1951, arrived and ignited the action. After the tryouts were completed, the preliminary results were announced. Fourteen students, equalling the number of speaking parts, were selected. However, only after Mrs. Blank had become acquainted with the acting potentialities of the cast were the actual parts assigned. As usual in any play, several small things went astray. Doors refused to open, telephones forgot to ring, scenery shook, etc. All the members of the crew will agree that producing Father of the Bride was a delightful but harrowing experience. Competent backstage workers always have been a prime requisite fora successful production. The props, the scenery, the prompting. the make-up. the program and all the other necessary jobs were handled in an extremely professional manner. That Father of the Bride was received as a complete success by the ticket-buyers was due as much to the back-stage and off-stage cast as to the on-stage members of the production. Each part, no matter how small, was important. Without the united effort of each participatng individual, the final results could not have been achieved. And with the closing of the final curtain, so ends this brief chapter concerning our senior lives at West Side. We now await the opening of the next volume.
