4 1 THE CLASS OF JANUARY 1950 PRESENTS... 7 (fay 0?i£tCe . WEST SIDE HIGH SCHOOL • NEWARK, NEW JERSEY Graduates, you are on the threshold of new responsibilities and duties and new opportunities. Many of you will be welcomed by colleges and employers because your record is such that we can recommend you. Others of you have wasted too many of your opportunities here. You will have to start with this handicap You live in a great free country which offers you opportunity after failure in a way that has never been open to youth. Privileges of position and great wealth are being curtailed in this country and are being spread to the great masses such as you and me. We must also accept our share of the responsibilities and duties which were formerly discharged by people in great power. The ever levelling process of democracy must fail unless each of us accepts his fair share of responsibility for better law making, better administration of law, more generosity in charity, and more personal responsibility to our religious beliefs. 2 FRANCIS B. SNAVELY Graduation is always a mixture of sadness and pleasure. To break old ties is difficult, but to look into the distant future is a thrilling experience. May your futures be all that you would like them to be— success—fame—happiness—and the best of luck. EDGAR K. DAWSON £dyvi Dcuo£ w (?a ut yul CLASS We, the graduation Class of January 1950, wish to express our sincerest appreciation and deepest gratitude to our hardworking and ever helpful advisers: Miss Laurette Connors and Mr. Bertram Trachtenberg. We are indebted to Miss Connors for all the work she has done with us in organizing the Senior Reception, presenting the Senior Play, and planning our other senior activities. 7 ic6te t6en2 ADVISERS Mr. Trachtenberg will always be remembered by us, the graduating seniors, for all the work and effort he has given to us in endeavoring to keep our financial problems in order and for all the other forms of aid he has given us. Since words nor actions will ever fully illustrate the sincerity of our feeling of appreciation and gratitude to our Class Advisers, We Seniors can only express our sentiments with just four humble words, Thank you very much ' 5 DEDICATION ele t rfynea @C vi6e Though letters are only symbols, we hope that the few which appear on this page are symbolic enough to express the deep appreciation which has swelled the heart of every Senior for Miss Clarke. She has worked untiringly at the job of editing this yearbook. Through her the task, which was a tedious one, became pleasant and interesting, and it is because of this that we take great pleasure in dedicating this yearbook to Miss Clarke. We trust that this will sufficiently express our thanks to her. 6 CULT Y MISS MARY ALLERDICE MISS ANNE JOHNSTON MISS JANET VAN BLARCOM LANGUAGE DEP0AP ENGLISH DEPARTMENT MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT r. -«UW5 ■ 1' SOCIAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT DEPARTMENT GUIDANCE STAFF ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY 12 FEATURES TYPING ... TO THE JUNIORS: We leave Physics and the problem of finding the number of volts in an inclined plane. TO THE SOPHOMORES: We leave Ivanhoe, to rescue them from Silas Marner. TO THE P. M.'S: We leave flashlights so that they can find their way home in the dark after the 11th period. TO MR. SNAVELY: We leave a years supply of Bozoaka bubble gum. TO MR. DAWSON: We leave a Senior class in which no one wants his schedule changed. TO MR. LONG: We leave Mr. Peterson's violin to be disposed of as Mr. Long sees fit. TO MR. TO WESTSIDE HIGH SCHOOL: We leave . . . Signed : THE CLASS OF JANUARY 1950 I • . . 4 I 4 1 . THE CLASS OF JUNE PRESENTS SCHOOL NEWARK, NEW JERSEY CLASS JANET DOMINO DEDICATION 2 9 9 • ADVISERS HERMAN KAPNER WE DEDICATE . . . . . . this yearbook which symbolizes our achievements of the past four years and our expectations fdr the future to our SENIOR CLASS ADVISERS, Miss Janet Domino and Mr. Herman Kapner, who have given willingly of their knowledge, time, experience and patience to make our senior year a most memorable one, and to make West Side High School everlasting in our thoughts. 3 FRANCIS B. SNAVELY PRINCIPAL TO THE CLASS OF JUNE 1950: Congratulations to the Seniors. We wish you bon voyage. Your honors will be set forth at various other places in the book. During your years the National Honor Society was established. West Side became a Senior High School. Marlene Bamert won the National Prize for her short story in 1949, our football, basketball, track and cross-country teams won championships, the playfield was surfaced, basketball was admitted as a major sport, the Green and White Association was organized. If you did not originate these, you helped make and establish them on a firm foundation. You formed friendships that you will enjoy for years. You gained an education commensurate to your efforts. It was laid before you like a banquet. If you partook sparingly, it was in spite of the EDGAR K. DAWSON VICE PRINCIPAL earnest efforts of your able teachers. If you tasted only the dessert, you may have lost your taste for the truly nourishing food that alone would give you strength for the future. If you partook fully of the solid intellectual viands spread before you, you are indeed ready for the next step in life. You know now the race was not to the swift and that the careless hare who slept (perhaps in class) lost as did those who lacked perseverance and honor. Those who worked, who did their home work day by day, who attended regularly, who shared club memberships, who played on the teams, who ran the Westonian, the Honor Society, this Yearbook, the Senior Play, who played in the Band, sang in the Glee Club, who were lifters not leaners, YOU see the value in your growing ability in intellect, in spirit, and in physical stature. Your future, too, will bring returns exactly commensurate with your efforts. Do little and you will live little. Hitch your wagon to a star and you will ride the heavens. GEORGE MARTINO CLARENCE B. HOKE LOUIS KRIEGSFELD APPRE ... to our SENIOR HOME ROOM TEACHERS, for their kindness, understanding, guidance, their oft-tried sense of humor, their high standards of workmanship, citizenship JOSEPHINE LEEDS SAM BOYAR STANLEY MARTLAND ANGELA SENA HARRY W. PETERSON CIA T and cooperation, we, the Class of June 1950, express our deep appreciation and extend our grateful thanks. 7 IRA A. SHAMPANSKY EDITH TUCHMAN SCHOOL SONG In morning light and evening fall. Through all the days of coming years— In times when glowing futures call— In hearts with laughter and with tears Our love for you will never die. Oh, Alma Mater, West Side High. Our love for you will never die. Oh, Alma Mater, West Side High. This love we have for you has grown More bright than any treasured gold. It deepens through each friend we've known. Each truth that to our hearts is told Within the shelter of your walls. Within the rooms where wisdom calls. Our love for you will never die. Oh, Alma Mater, West Side High. Though we have need to wander far. Close in our hearts your name will be. Your goodness, like a radiant star, Will rise with every memory, And having these sweet dreams of you, We shall remember and be true. Our love for you will never die, Oh, Alma Mater, West Side High. In morning light and evenfall. Through all the days of coming years, In times when glowing futures call, In hearts with laughter and with tears, Our love for you will never die. THE GREEN AND WHITE ASSOC!A NON During the term of September 1947 plans were made for a student organization. Delegates were chosen from each home room to attend a constitutional convention. The convention branched off into committees to plan a constitution and to discuss the various forms of constitutions in use in other schools. As the convention progressed, several names were suggested for the title of the organization. The names were then given to the students to decide among. A vote in the homerooms resulted in the choice of the Green and White Association. (The G. W. A.) Later a constitution was drawn up and approved by students and teachers. The G. W. A. definitely proposer to encourage the growth of good citizenship and self-government, to give to the students of West Side School a sense of 100 responsibility for their school, and to provide for the general welfare and betterment of the student body. Among its achievements, the G. W. A. has since it's beginning sponsored dances varying from square dances to masquerade to plain ball room dances, all well attended and enjoyed. The G. W. A. has sponsored a Handbook for Students which has proved to be beneficial to new students as well as old. Also included among it's accomplishments is a system whereby points are given for extra-curricular activities. We, the Class of June 1950, extend to the underclasses the very best wishes for their good fortune and trust that they will add to the list of achievements of the G. W. A. Slinging the bull Arguing with the Faculty IN APPRECIATION HELEN A. CLARKE We, the Class of June 1950, wish to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to Miss Helen A. Clarke. Her tireless help and effort helped to make our yearbook what it is: a book which will preserve precious memories for us in years to come. 126 We, the Class of June 1950, being of unsound minds and suffering from undue influence, do hereby make this, our last will and testament: To The Juniors We leave all the nice new teachers to break in. To The Sophomore Class We leave the Biology classes and the bisecting of individuals . . . er . . . animals. To All Male Members Of West Side We leave the healthful Gym lockers with their fragrant atmosphere after a hard day of basketball. To The Females We leave the admiration and envy of Mrs. Offenkrantz's apparel. To Mr. Ormond We leave a 1960 fire-engine, red Buick convertible. To Mr. Donner We leave a sterilized window pole and doorknob. To Mr. Long and Mr. Prag We leave two pairs of Adlers. To Mr. Spear We leave fruit salad combinations. To Mr. Dudas and Miss Domino We leave those blue Mondays. To Mr. Sperber We leave a barrel of worms for all those apples he will continue to distribute. To Mr. Peterson We leave a bottle of Kyron. To Mr. Amant We leave a trip to Ole Chipen. To Miss Merville We leave a phonograph record which continually reminds students in the library that quiet is completely necessary. To Mr. Kapner We leave the relief of not having to put boosters in alphabetical order. To All The Teachers We leave the scheming and planning of those tests which they know the students will fail even if they have studied and crammed the night before. To Mr. Dawson We leave those students who like to change their schedules two or three weeks, sometimes months, after the cycle has begun. To Mr. Snavely We leave students with a remarkable sense of humor or the ability to laugh at any, shall we call them jokes?, they chance to hear. To Those Devoted To Chemistry We leave the sweetness of hydrogen sulphide. To The Janitors We leave lockers full of . . . well, almost anything, from books to pinup girls. To Miss Clarke We leave our full appreciation and thanks for her aid in making the yearbook possible. And last, but not least, to our Beloved School, the housing place of those who have trudged here through snow, sleet, rain, or shine . . . We leave . . .
