WE, the Seniors of the Graduating Class of January l949, are proud to dedicate our yearbook to MR. DAVID E. AMIDON, one of the most beloved teachers ever to have taught in West Side High School. Mr. Amidon was one of the small number of our faculty who have been in West Side since its opening in l9Z6. Mr. Amidon came to West Side as a teacher of Mathe- matics and as Head of the Mathematics Department, His superior knowledge ot his subject and his genial and understanding personalityearned him the respect and loye of the student body. Now, because ot illness, Mr. Amidon is no longer able to be with us here at West Side. We regret hissabsence. c We feel that there is no other person with whom weahave come in Contact during our four years in West Side High School who more richly deserves this dedication. We do, therefore, dedicate this, our Yearbook, to the memory of the long and faithful serviceggiven to the students of West Side High Schooi by Mr. David E. Amiclongand we wish for him long years of enjoyment of his well-earned retirement. S Eg E A A W' i, ANDREW G. SISKA ADVISERS' HELEN A. In morning light and eveningfall, Through all the days of coming years- ln times when glowing futures Call- ln hearts with laughter and with tears Our love for you will never die, Oh, Alma Mater, West Side High. Delegates were chosen from each home room to attend a Con- stitutional Convention. Ralph D'Addario, who was selected by Mr. Cain and Mr. -Snavely, acted as president of the convention. The convention proceeded to branch off into several committees to plan and discuss the various types or forms of constitutions of other schools. At this point, Mr. Cain was appointed vice principal of Central High School. He was replaced by Miss Tuchman and Miss Mauer. With their guidance the convention progressed. Several names were suggested for the name of the organization. The names were given to the students for them decide among. A vote in home rooms revealed that the most popular name was the Green and White Association CG. W. A.l. A constitution was drawn up and approved by the students and by Mr. Snavely. At the start of the February term, Miss Mauer, who was transferred to Webster Junior High School, was replaced by Mrs. Shampansky as adviser. In March, an election was held. The first officers were Ralph D'Addario, president, Pat Balsamo, vice president, Pat Mullin, financial secretary, and Eleanor Hutter, recording secretary. The first achievement of the G. W. A. under its new offi- cers wasfa May Dance which proved to be a great success. They also laid the groundwork for the Student Handbook. ln May, elections were held again, and Sam Rinaldi was elected president, John Roehm was elected vice presi- dent, Joan Uhl was elected recording secretary, and Helene Rosenberg was elected financial secretary. Under their leadership, the Handbooks were dis- tributed. ln October, the G. W. A. held a Square Dance, an immense success. We, the Senior Class of January l949, wish the G. W. A. the best of luck in their future work for the betterment of West Side. J79 V Name Amato, Ann ............... Angemi, Rose ,............ Atkinson, Beatrice ......, Auerbach, Ruth ........... These aspiring young actresses live in a the- atrical boarding 'house called The Footlights Club in the West 50's of New York City. The characters run from a clinging southern belle, played by Stella Mackowicz, to a concert pianist who has studied for fifteen years only to find herself pounding out cheap music for a bunch of chorus girls. Then there's Kendal Adams of the Boston Adamses lDoris Evansl who is a little above the hilarity and disappointments of the rest of the girls, and Judith Canfield, played by Laura Dentses, the girl with the ever-ready wise-crack. A humorous note is struck by the appearance of Little Mary lFrances Ehmannl who is very tall, and Big Mary llEvelyn Liottal who is very short. ' ' Out of all thisfcomes the heroine of the play, Terry Randall, very well portrayed by Adeline Paduano, who instantly gives one the feeling that she is a born actress . For a time, Terry believes herself in love with eccentric, young Keith Burgess lErwin Lockamyl but when Keith goes to Hollywood leaving Terry with the increasing struggle of hunting for parts, she soon finds herself turning to David Kingsley lBill Schwartzl, motion picture producer. David tries' to get Terry into pictures but, when she declines, he finally buys a play with the intention of starring her. The last curtain leaves one with a happy feeling and Terry headed for a star-studded future. 84 if . J... QPQE -1 fm fy El . LAST year, led by such stars as Bob Cilento, Lou Ciarrocca, Sam Gambacorta, Tom Higgins, Joe McTigue, and others, West Side's football team had their most successful season in years. Up until the final game of the season, the Rough Riders were undefeated, but, on Thanksgiving day, their traditional rival, Irvington, upset the Rough Riders by a 7-6 score. The loss eliminated the West Siders from the state title contest, although they were rated second in the state to Montclair. The Green and White started the season with an impressive victory over the Big Blue of Barringer by a l9-O score. After that the West Siders went to East Orange and eked out a 6-O victory over the Panthers. Nutley was the next opposition, and they were overpowered by a 38-O score. Hillside, the next opponent, was the first team to score against the Rough Riders with the final score being 33-l2. The following week the Rough Riders met their first test in their battle for the City title. ln a game against Central, the West Siders went into the final three minutes on the short end of a I2-6 score. However, two quick touchdowns gave the Green and White an l8-I2 victory. After that, the Green and White met little opposition until the final game of their season when they finally dropped their first game. This year the Rough Riders have lost the first eight members of last year's backfield and four starters from the line. ln spite of these losses, the West Siders have several veterans, and with these veterans should give all teams a battle for the i948 City title. 90 COACH GEORGE WEINSTEIN led his team through a good season and barely missed taking the City title. The squad finished the season with a record of nine wins, six losses, and one tie, with Pitcher Gus Bartholomae gathering six ofthe nine wins. ln the middle ofthe baseball campaign, while the team was going strong, they were invited into the Greater Newark Tournament to play Hillside. ln the tenth inning West Side and Pitcher Charlie DiGisi lost the tough struggle 5-3. Graduating from the baseball nine are pitchers Bill Schwartz and Charlie DiGisi and outfielders Sheldon Nagrodsky and Bob Buck. The team should do exceptionally well, however, in the coming season because it will be bolstered by five returning lettermen. The veterans are Joe Mango, Joe Roselli, John McDonald, Matty James, and Lou Ludovico. 9l 31451-'34 ll as If f 'p ,. A j qi jg., 5.1.4 . ,i xkrk ,,,- . .W .-.--WW V W V THE West Side runners opened with a triangular meet against East Side and Wee- quahic at Schools Stadium. Coach Charles Hartzell's boys lost that meet by a very close margin. This defeat was followed by a win over East Side and South Side. West Side then began to prepare for its defense of the city title. On the first day, West Side took a lead in the field events. The track events were post- poned because of rain for one week. When the meet was resumed, West Side managed to re- tain its lead to capture the city title for the sec- ond year in succession. The remainder of the THIS year's cross-country team is green, and Coach Charles Hartzell can only hope for the best. Gone from last season's squad are Captain Bill Zeltman, John Schell, Harry Roche, Charlie Yust, and Nick Remondelli, leaving the team with only one letterman. Captain Bob Puglisi, the one veteran, will lead season saw West Side put up a brave fight against much better opponents, but always lose at the end. As an overall record the team made a poor showing, but still stands the trophy showing our supremacy in the city. The team was led through the season by Co-Captains Joe Cole and Fred Kirtland. Other outstanding members of the squad were Tom Higgins, Al Baglivo, John Schell, Mike Sileo, Bill Zeltman, and Bob Hubic. Returning next season will be Tom Higgins and Mike Sileo. We hope Coach Hartzell will be able to build a team about these two boys and come out with another City title. ,A ,, .? W.' L. ,MLW0 mf , f fi i, ,I I ' iffffi 1.4 A t. West Side lost to Orange and East Orange but beat Bloomfield. Walter Hockaday, who has developed into a remarkable runner, took first place in two of the meets. Other boys who show promise are Herb DeSocia, Bob Floyd, Nick Zelenenki, and Bill LaRusso. If EMM 1 ffi ffQ'.7frEl fd K. Under the guidance of Coach Ben Dispenziere, the mermen had an average season despite the fact that several able Iettermen had returned from the City championship team of a year before. Led by veterans Tom Higgins, Harry Roche, Bob Engerman, and others, the Rough Riders took their share of meets, but were unable to retain the City title. This year the outlook for the team is not too bright. The loss of key men has weakened the squad, but, under the able guidance of Coach Dispenziere, and with the aid of several members of last year's team, West Siders may see another City championship team in the future. Q. , ,... . , ENTERING their sophomore year on the court, West Side's basketball team has dealt a blow to Central's and Weequahic's monopoly of the city league crown. In their freshman year, under the capable coaching of Mr. Walter Bakum, West Side's courtmen defeated Weequahic, the city champs, twice and Belleville, the county champs, twice. Two men, Joe McTigue and Dick Regan, were placed on the all-city team, while Dick Regan was chosen as one of the five men High School Basketball Players in the state. West Side has lost some key basketball players from last season, but, sparked by Dick Regan, our coming invasion of the courts should be another successful season chalked up in the record books. -'Qtr 2, qw--.iff 'R '-sfff: I 1 Y-.'.s,,xf fwlailiwxkii's1.gg'Q5fg+ , ,, 1-.ggi ...isg,,g:erig,,,,Kmt,,f,i:it..-s..t,, 1,2 as-2 its ,Z sg t - , f , s., ...- .uri 5,5 ,I rv: fy 31 r S. . Bitzi xi M Q W THE Tennis Team, under the able guidance of Mr. Bert Trachtenberg, made its formal debut back at West Side after a five year absence, The new Rough Rider squad, although lacking the experience and strength of its oppo- nents, played fairly good matches. The team's major setbacks were handed to them by state champions, Montclair, and runners-up, Columbia and East Orange. Thomas Jefferson and West Orange were given close games by the team's three starters, Milton Messinger, Erwin Lockamy, and Sidney Franz- blau. Although Messinger and Lockamy will not be back, the rest of the team will be looking for a bigger and better season in l949. 9 AU REV OIR W , : ...wg-1: zzrziifisi Blsssseiissilfv .grmjmrtz N 2 Q nzzfira ,rw-..,w.f... 4 --f... , Nfv A in 'Q 9 QQ-.ifn f 'r B4 pg S gg 5i 'i5sml L S ppnrm ilii WPN5 'SK .. . 3 pump-l ,,..-nu--- nw gpuwnnvlil' X91 P Au r0iG12AP+1s .3 1' , f '.l.,.
