In evanescent beauty, Child of the Sun and the Rain, The mighty arch of the Rainbow Stretches o'er hill and plain Resplendent with mystic beauty What wonder early men, Awestruck, felt it a symbol Of things beyond their ken, And each wove it into a legend Of what he felt had been? The Hebrew sage and leader, Historian of the Flood, Saw the Rainbow as a symbol Of the promises of God That nevermore should a Deluge Pour waters mountain-high; Though God in righteous anger Saw man His laws defy, He would hold His hand—and in witness Set the Rainbow in the sky The Greek with his love for legend Saw a bridge from gods to man, Down which dainty-tripping lris To Earth from Olympus ran. Bright messenger of Hera, From the Queen of Gods she bore Comfort to sorrowing mortals Bidding them weep no more Healing the wounds of the spirit Of those whose hearts were sore. Later, enshrined in folk-lore, To wide-eyed children told Who reaches the end of the Rainbow Will find a pot of gold А leprechawn sits beside it Guarding it night and day, But he whose heart is fearless Can bear the gold away, REYBURN A. HIGGINS For, finding the end of the Rainbow, No power can say him nay. Principal Covenant, comfort, or riches, Choose ye the tale you will, For still the far-flung Rainbow Stretches o'er plain and hill.
