1945 я Feen... 22 A este” сад Fak y IRA AD DEDICATION DEDICATE OUR YEARBOOI BELOVED PRINCIPAL AND FRIENE REYBURN A. НІССІМ5 In evanescent beauty, Child of the Sun and the Rain, The mighty arch of the Rainbow Stretches o'er hill and plain Resplendent with mystic beauty What wonder early men, Awestruck, felt it a symbol Of things beyond their ken, And each wove it into a legend Of what he felt had been? The Hebrew sage and leader, Historian of the Flood, Saw the Rainbow as a symbol Of the promises of God That nevermore should a Deluge Pour waters mountain-high; Though God in righteous anger Saw man His laws defy, He would hold His hand—and in witness Set the Rainbow in the sky The Greek with his love for legend Saw a bridge from gods to man, Down which dainty-tripping lris To Earth from Olympus ran. Bright messenger of Hera, From the Queen of Gods she bore Comfort to sorrowing mortals Bidding them weep no more Healing the wounds of the spirit Of those whose hearts were sore. Later, enshrined in folk-lore, To wide-eyed children told Who reaches the end of the Rainbow Will find a pot of gold А leprechawn sits beside it Guarding it night and day, But he whose heart is fearless Can bear the gold away, REYBURN A. HIGGINS For, finding the end of the Rainbow, No power can say him nay. Principal Covenant, comfort, or riches, Choose ye the tale you will, For still the far-flung Rainbow Stretches o'er plain and hill. And belief in ties supernal Awakes in our hearts again And we feel the mystic beauty That has stirred the souls of men When we see the irised Rainbow Arching o'er hill and plain. —Reyburn А. Seniors Finally Achieve Goal! А Freshman's First Day “There's a side door for you, FRESHMAN! These were the first words to greet me as I entered West Side High School to begin a new phase of my life. My mind had been full of exalted thoughts about my fu- ture as I had approached what would soon be called my Alma Mater. I re- member taking a deep breath and sticking my chest out a little as І stood in front of the building, and somehow I got the idea that I was going to enjoy my new life. (After all, no one had told me.) To this day, I can see myselí waltzing up the walk, with light, carefree strides, and opening the door. It was then, out of the deep, dark, depths of the front entrance that I heard, for the first time, those inevitable words. This provocative, I learned later, had is- sued forth from one of those superior, intelligent, heaven-born geniuses, known as Seniors, who have a sixth sense for spotting Freshmen. Un- daunted, however, I reentered the building by a side door, but, this too was wrong; for I was acidly told that the boys had a separate entrance. My slightly bewildered condition ac- counts for the fact that I had a great deal of trouble finding my homeroom. Here I learned another lesson— never, NEVER ask a student for di- rections. My schedule, I soon dis- covered, was another pitfall for un- suspecting newcomers such as I. At first, I balked at having a fiíth period, but this turned out to be only the beginning of my woes, and it took considerable perseverance to survive not only the remainder of my first hectic day, but also an entirely be- wildering first year. Of course I did survive, and I eventually rose to the lofty estate of Seniordom. Four Years' Outstanding Achievements Let us close the doors of the present and open the doors of the past to see what has been accomplished in our four vears at West Side. In look- ing back, the students remember December 7, 1941 as the day when the United States declared war on Japan. Soon afterward West Side began its war program by making the school a center тог the purchase of war stamps and bonds, under the leadership of Mr. Samuel Boyar, who later became the adviser of the War Savings Committee. The first goal set by the students was “а jeep a month”, but, because the response was so great, it was changed to “а jeep a week.” The next achievement was the purchase of a Mustang fighter plane. Having achieved this remarkable goal, the student body turned its efforts to the purchase of a Navy Hellcat fighter plane. This undertaking was also crowned with success in February 1945. Winning {Һе City Championship in 1943 was a gala occasion. The boys on the football team were spurred on to win every city game by the cheering from the grandstand. It was a double victory because our cross country team would not be outdone, and they too won the City Championship. Т е students were highly elated when the silver cup was presented to the school in an auditorium program. In September of 1944, for the first time in the history of West Side High, girl cheerleaders, under the leadership of Mrs. Hermine Peck and Mr. Charles Hartmann, were introduced at the Barringer vs. West Side football game. In the first game that the girl cheerleaders participated, the cheer- ing swelled considerably. Dressed in dark green sweaters and white skirts, the girls displayed the colors of West Side. Let us hope that in years to come they will continue to cheer the boys to victory. As is the tradition of West Side, our senior class gave the preceding graduates a senior reception on January 16, 1945. It was the efforts and cooperation of the students, as well as the senators, that made this occasion a success. Along with social dancing, several students gave individual per- ormances of their talent. In February, several students submitted compe- titive plans for the editorship of the yearbook. The Yearbook Staff was chosen and started planning for the Iris . Other plans were made for the Senior Show, “Janie,” and other senior activities. АП the seniors busied themselves getting ready for the big climax which has come in the form of graduation. THE INQUIRING REPORTER QUESTION: What did you like most about high school? We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all Seniors are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unallienable rights; that among these are griping about homework, buying the Westonian (only 6c) and the pursuing of graduation. That, to secure these rights, senior ac- tivities are instituted among them, deriving their just powers from the con- sent of the faculty; that, whenever any form of senior activities becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the seniors to eliminate the chair- men and elect new ones, or to institute new activities, and lay their foundation on anything seniors can find most likely to effect their safety and happiness. Courage, indeed, will dictate how long these activities shall remain established and not changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly, all experience hath shown that seniors are more disposed to suffer because they are seniors. We, therefore, the June Class of 1945, appealing to the kindness of the Principal and the faculty for passing grades at the end of the 4A term, solemnly publish and declare, That these prospective graduates are, and of right shall be, free and independent men and women; and, as free men and women shall have full powers to stay up until the last stroke of the curfew hour, go out on blind dates, and drink lime and Coca-Colas. And, for the sup- port of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the consent of the faculty to let us graduate, we mutually pledge to each other, our humble lives, our measly fortunes, and our sacred honor, РАНА Som Sul Doing their duty concerns all of ou; By following rules you help them too THE A. These skillful musicians have since been a prominent feature at every West Side social affair. Their spirited playing did a great deal to make the senior reception the success that it was. They are graduates now, and the loss of their talent will certainly be felt by the school. THE SENIOR RECEPTION COMMITTEE S is the semi-annual custom at West Side, the 4B class acted as hosts to the January ‘45 graduating class at the traditional Senior Reception. These people, now 4As themselves, were responsible for making the reception the resounding success that it was.. By the time the first football game arrives, her hard work has produced a well organized, trim and snappy group of Twirlers. The girls go through intricate maneuvers with a high degree of precision. They add color and sparkle to West Side ranks. THE USHERETTES JAN. '45 HESE are the seniors who presided as ushers and usherettes for the gradu- ation of January, 1945. They did a splendid job of maintaining order, getting all guests seated promptly and correctly, and making the graduation program run smoothly. Football, cross country, swimming, and bowling were the sports in which we excelled enough to be awarded these great honors. The students were not the only ones to contribute to the athletic glory of our school, for our teachers have earned the bowling tributes, thus setting an example for us students to follow, While engaging in sports, however, we have not neglected our studies for every athlete must remain in good standing if he wishes to engage in scholastic sports under West Side’s colors. West Side has a great athletic background, as these trophies well testify. The athletically minded youth of this school who are now graduating wish to take this opportun- ity to express their gratitude for the honor and privilege of being able to be members of Green and White squads. The lessons we have learned will not be forgotten, and our thoughts will be with you always, no matter where these troubled times shall see us go. The photograph reproduced above illustrates the best combination of all, studies and sports. The motto of the Y.M.C.A., “A sound mind in a sound body”, is one we should keep in mind all our lives. OUR GRADUATING ATHLETES VICTORY and Р М М all of man's activities, either individual or group, whether they be warlike or peaceful, producing a living or recreational, creative or destructive, inevitably the sum total of all of them will be a mixture of success and failure, victory and defeat. It seems to be characteristically human to erect a monument to the victory or success to hold it in our тетогу and to forget the failure or defeat as quickly as possible. This last you cannot and should not do! There are the names of almost a thousand boys and girls on West Side's “І Service list; not all of whom were outstanding athletes; in- deed, some were not athletes at all, many never tried to be; yet all of them,—all of West Side, participated in the gaining of the victories possible. These inanimate pieces of wood and metal are, then, to us remaining, the symbols of the Living Spirit of West Side which has taken the shock of defeat so necessary to setting the stage for Victory, and which will, in the post-war world, absorb the heartaches and suf- ferings inevitably to be encountered in making and keeping the Peace. Т е hill-and- dalers met an even dozen opponents and were victorious in over six of them. The season produced its share of upsets, close calls, and disappointments. Outside of our dual meets, West Side ran in the annual City and State Meets and participated in an interstate meet, and the N.Y.U. “Spiked Shoe meet. Silvio Venturi placed fifth from among over five hundred entries. We were sadly disappointed when Venturi suffered a thigh and side injury half- way through the State Meet and finished 26th. He made this up, though, by taking first in the city meet, but unfortunately Barringer took the team first, followed by the Rough Riders Venturi has placed first in all our dual meets, and has been strongly supported by Jim Nugent and the rest of the squad. The squad lost five men through graduation the past year, but Venturi and several promising juniors will enable us to put out a good squad next year TEAM RECORD Opp. W.S.
