San === = = x = LT Dedication THE FUTURE! TO YOU WE TURN—WHATEVER YOU MAY HOLD IN STORE FOR US, OUR MEN IN SERVICE, AND OUR NATION. WE SEE IN YOUR HAND THE TORCH. HOLD IT HIGH SO THAT ALWAYS THE GOAL MAY BE BEYOND OUR GRASP—BECKONING US EVER FORWARD AND UPWARD. BY STRIVING ALWAYS TO BE FINER AND BETTER, WE MAY HELP TO MAKE A WORLD OF PEACE; A WORLD SAFE FOR ALL PEOPLE TO DWELL IN BROTHERHOOD REYBURN A. HIGGINS EDGAR K. DAWSON Principal Assistant Principal The Dawn “These are the times that try men's souls’’— What of the Future? Dare we dream In darker hours than these we know, The soul of Man may gain release The ringing words of Thomas Paine And, scaling heights yet unattained, Fanned into fire the patriot glow. Found the millenium of Peace? Once more, we stand in battle line; Still lives the Hope that Man may rise Once more, wage war the world to free; Above this tide that o’er us rolls; And, heavy-hearted, bow to feel That future ages may not cry, That world’s hour in Gethsemane. “These are the times that try men's souls.’ , —R. The football squad had a highly successful season suffering a lone defeat against a formidable Nutley eleven in the eight contests that were played. The first game against South Side, the Rough Riders emerged with a 24-0 win. In the next game the Green Wave steamrollered over a strong East Orange aggregation to the tune of 26-7. Highlights of that game were a brilliant 70 yard reverse run by Ed Kenefick and three touchdowns registered by Jim Bouie. Then the Green and White squad ran into the tough Nutley team and came out on the short end of a 12-6 count in one of the hardest fought games of the season. The Rough Riders bounced back from that game to defeat Central 12-0, as Jim Bouie galloped 49 and 65 yards for scores. The following Saturday the West Siders nosed out a surprising Weequahic eleven 13-12, thanks to an extra point plunge by Ed Kenefick. The squad rebounded, however, and crushed Barringer 39-0 in a game which saw Bouie and Lou Sibilia each score two touch- downs. The next brought together West Side and East Side to decide the city championship. The Green Wave downed the Red Raiders 14-7 in a game featuring stellar line play. The Rough Riders brought their season to a close with a fine 24-6 victory over Irvington in a traditional Turkey Day classic. The game was highlighted by three touchdown runs by Jim Bouie and a scoring plunge by Ed Kenefick. Final season results proved our boys to be the fifth best eleven in the state. Coach Louis (Bucky) Harris, in his first year at the helm, after several successful seasons with the freshmen, was considered by many as New Jersey's outstanding coach. All through the season the Rough Riders were bolstered by fine line play from Jerry Malanga, Henry Erd, Richard Kiss, and Erich Steinhauser. The Cross Country team suffered, but two defeats in nine dual meets. The outstanding St. Benedict’s squad nosed out our boys 25-30 in the first meet of the season. In the second meet the West Side har- riers shut out South Side 15-40. The squad followed this with a surpris- ing 25-30 victory over a fine Barringer team. Central was beaten next 21-34 with Tom Perry, Silvio Venturi and Ernest Aitelli placing one, two, three. Weequahic was eliminated 19-36 as Tom Perry led the field over the 21: mile course in 11:42. The West Side harriers conquered Kearny next 24-31. In the state meet, our boys placed third behind the out- standing Union and Trenton squads. Tom Perry and Silvio Venturi finished ninth and eleventh, Phil Scav- uzzo, Ernest Aitelli and Captain Don Harpell also placed. East Orange and Irvington were also beaten by the Green and White team. The city meet was next on the list and with Tom Perry and Silvio Venturi leading the field and tying for first. Don Harpell was ninth, The season came to a close against Union with the Green harriers on the short end of a 21-34 count. In the spring of 1943 the tennis team fared rather poorly due to lack of material. The netsters won two matches out of six with Malcolm Mooney and Paul Englander leading the squad. The baseball team under Coach Weinstein started the season off poorly, but found themselves in mid-season and played capable ball thereafter. The Green nine opened against a rugged Hillside team and lost 12-3. Next, we lost 13-4, to a powerful Columbia aggregation, as George Whitley pitched heroicly but in vain. Our third game was a thriller. East Orange came out on the long end of a 4-3 victory after ten hectic innings. Then came our first City League clash with Central; we won 4-3, as Harvey Bingham belted out hits just when they did the most damage. Next on the card was Weequahic, whom we took care of in fine fashion, 4-2, as Mike Orsini pitched a two hitter. We lost our next three games by close scores. They were to Nutley, 8-5; East Side, 5-1; and a heartbreaker to Irvington, 4-3. The men of Green met their last two City League opponents, Barringer and South Side, and they vanquished them 7-4 and 2-0 respectively. In doing so we clinched the runner-up position to East Side for the City title. Next the West Side nine met Kearny, one of the outstanding squads in the state. With Mike Orsini limiting Kearny to one in- field hit, his mates pounded out an impressive 4-1 verdict. As a result of the victory over Kearny and our second place berth in the City League, we were invited to compete in the State Tournament, but Caldwell eliminated the Green and White squad in the qualifying round behind the fine pitching of Bill Edwards. ella Wilkir Jimmie Stanton Flossie Neverset Kathleen O'Day MARTIN GEN MILTON SNYDER IRVING BALLIN THE LEADS THE CAST N December 3 and 4, the Senior Show, ‘‘Forget-me-not’’ under the direction of Paul T. Haagan, Jr., proved delightful entertainment. The cast included Barbara Aszody and Gabriel Nevola as the heroine and hero, both of whom delivered their parts and songs to the satisfaction of every- one. Herbert Gieser, contrary to his nature, successfully portrayed the strict uncle of Kathleen. Bernice Feldman, Martin Gen, Jerry Bashover, and Arthur Felder made a hit as the comedians of the show. Milton Snyder, typical man about town, took the part of the villain, Ned Rollingston. Irving Ballin was James, the butler. In the chorus “Dance My Lady,” Sal Ricca sang; and, as a climax, waltzed about the stage with Jeanne Zorrer who, besides making a graceful picture in the dance, also did a fine piece of act- ing. The several choruses in the show were: “Dance O'Mania,” By Hecks,” “Lassies,” Shy Maids,” and “Guest Girls.” To add to the general excitement usually involved in a show, Bernice Feldman was unable to take part in the Saturday evening performance be- cause of mumps. Edith W. Scott, senior adviser, substituted for Arabella admirably. The senior class will never forget the spirit and sportsmanship she showed in the emergency. t 1 PN وران ГУ M CURIE.
