Memories are indeed beautiful. Now more than ever memories will play an important part in filling the empty spaces of the future. To you, the Senior Class of I943, in order that those empty spaces might be filled, we shall all take a walk down Memory Lane. June 9, l 942 The traditional and impressive Lamp Ceremony officially started the Class of January l943. The lamp was presented to Thomas Green by Conrad De Filippis. One of the big events of West Side's social year, the Senior Reception, was held the same day in the afternoon. Refreshments, music, and surprise novelties were enjoyed by all. lncidentally, close to six hundred seniors attended, certainly one of the largest receptions in the history of West Side High School. September 23, l 942 Politics was at its height. The class politicians were giv- ing final instructions to the voters. Result-the Senators elected were Audrey Butterly, Herbert Dear, Marie Friscia, Thomas Green, Doris Hammer, Marilyn Hill, Dorothy Johnsen, Melvin Landew, Helen Mueller, Doris Pennington, Rose Pizzi, Betty Pols, Josephy Rigato, Frank Ruffner, Victoria Taranto, Ethel Tench, Robert Wacker, and Betty Young. October l , I 942 Our first venture, the selling of green and white pencils, was very successful. The football schedule for this semester was inscribed upon each pencil. 50 ,ru lane October l 2, 1942 Flashl Ethel Tench was chosen editor of our yearbook, Reveille. The Senior Class, inspired by the name Reveille, has become service-minded. Already, Herbert Gaestel, Frank Marschner, and Robert Standiford are in the armed forces of the United States. Soon, more will be joining, girls as well as boys. October 31, i942 Witches, goblins, and pumpkins were predominant at the gala Hallowe'en Hop given by the Senior Class. lngenious hall decorations, entertainment, and the latest music via records comprised the program. Once more, the seniors took a bow. The Dance was really super December 4 and 5, I9-42 Extra! Wuxtral Read all about it, Visit Palm Beach at West Side High. That's That, a musical comedy staged by the Senior Class under the direction of John B. Rogers Pro- duction was about a millionaire's son, Kenneth Neilson, who poses as a lifeguard at Palm Beach. Complications set in Friday night when little Butch, who is three years' old, refused to go on the stage, His partner, blonde, blue-eyed Florence Gockeler, a four-year old, went on and won the applause of all. January 20, i943 Senior Day has passed, the coveted awards have been given out, and graduation has come and gone, leaving many hearts strangely saddened. Our walk through Memory Lane is ended but not for- gotten-we shall stroll along its path many times in the future. 5l Sllllllll VERY term the various talents of the Senior Class combine to produce the biannual dramatic attempt. The word at- tempt should be underlined. The Class of January i943 issued forth with a fast-moving musical entitled That's That which was directed under the ever-watching, all-seeing eye of Mrs. Drew. The tryouts came first, the regular order, which is strange when you consider that this was West Side. The main char- acters were chosen as well as the supporting players but the rehearsals showed all to be characters. The primary worry, however, of our directress was the distinct aversion most mem- bers of the cast had to learning their lines. The choruses cannot be held blameless in this category, for it seemed they had never heard of the Rockettes. Every dancer had his own particular version and the outcome during rehearsal was instead of a well- ordered drill more like juke box, Saturday night. And speaking of Drill, that personage had charge of the lights, curtains, and scenery. l-le managed to blow out five fuses during his short term as head electrician. After weeks of endless practicing and getting ads for the program, That's That was ready. At seven o'clock on De- cember 4, the complete cast was on hand, and the make up committee went to work. Lipstick, powder, mascara, substances hitherto unknown to the boys we hope, were applied in a pre- ponderance. The screams of agony which were heard during those few moments are indescribable. Now just before the curtain goes up, tradition has it an actor will forget his lines, choruses will forget routines only to remember them on the stage. This is only half true. Forget our parts we did but remember them we did not. One young lad, Melvin Landew, when faced with his situation, remarked, There will be a two-minute pause while l remember my lines. The audience laughed and Mrs. Drew fainted. The audience laughed at us and with us but they laughed which is important. The final curtain was rung down and both the actors and people out front breathed a sigh of relief. The first and most difficult night was over. True, another night still awaited us but we had already learned the primary rule of the stage, keep moving. The reason is obvious. That's That will always be remembered by the Senior Class as an episode of interest, amusement, and one which will leave a lasting impression. Out of the far corner came a loud, familiar voice. Turning my head, I noticed Morton Landew who was just returning from his job as a red cap. Walking over to greet him, I met Elliot Mintz, that great commentator. At the next stop, a bearded man with long, grey hair boarded the flying omni- bus. You could have knocked me down with a feather when l was introduced to that man of the classics, Robert Drechsler. With him was that well-known adventurer, Frank Ruffner, who had just returned from Mars. His account of how he narrowly escaped from the planet left us gasping. Frank started telling us about Betty Bailey, the famous woman pilot and her record-break- ing space flight to Venus. It was quite thrilling to hear about all these schoolmates who had made good and become world-famous. At the next stop, Rita Ponzini, Robert Wacker, Morton Erdfarb, and Pat Donatiello came on board. Rita and Pat had just returned from Washington where they had received a patent for the invention of invisible paint. Morton was planning a rest after his brilliant success in solving the disheartening economic situa- tion. Robert was on his way to an important international business convention of which he had been recently elected president. When the helicopter landed, I got off and boarded a bus. Who should collect my fare but Helen McCabe, a pretty conductorettel While l was trying to find my fare, some one almost knocked me off my feet. Angry, I shouted, Look out, stupid. He answered, l'm not stupid, I'm Melvin Landew. Here was another classmate who made good. He was writing the humor column for a city daily. 58 We got off the bus together and walked down Times Square. It was now evening, quiet and peaceful for all but two roving reporters, Lillian Kur- shner and Joan Stein, who were rushing to report on the latest premiere. Melvin introduced me to the songbirds of the day, Mabel lnverarity and Gene- vieve Kopyta, who had just finished making a record of l See Your Face Before Me from the picture l Wake Up Screaming. By this time my head was spinning wildly, nevertheless, Melvin and I entered a theater to see a vaudeville show. Without any notice, a man in an armored suit appeared on the stage. He started telling some jokes, and from the tone of the voice I recognized Irving Drill. After he finished, a line of pretty chorines came out with the persons of Lillian Green and Mari- lyn Hill among them. My head was still spinning so we stepped into a Hungarian restaurant for a soothing cup of coffee. Doris Pennington whom I had met in the theater had suggested this. Doris is a nurse in the same school where Don Shumrick is gaining fame as a truant officer. Don's fame is said to be due to the fact that he knows all the favorite haunts of cutters. From the corner of the restaurant came the strains of a gypsy violin. The player was Paul Drechsel who has renounced science for music. Near Melvin and me was Jeanne Jackson, popular society matron, who was entertaining. Rosalie Bashover, poet, was her guest of honor, and Elsie Stauch, woman of the year, and Betty Pols, Hollywood star, were some of Jeanne's other guests. Every one commented on the delicious food, which was supplied by Jean Hoffman's up-to-date farm. After my coffee, I made my way home alone. Bernice Fleischman my private secretary, was waiting for me with some important news from Charles Kleissler, artist extraordinary. The day had been too much for a body well along in years that I went to bed and Bernice took care of the matter in her usual efficient manner. All this boys and girls goes to show you that you can never tell the future. 59 MARCELLA BELLOF VIRGINIA BRAUSE AUDREY BUTTERLY ROSE COSTANZA PATSY DONATIELLO PAUL DRECHSEL ROBERT DRECHSLER IRVING DRILL ELVIRA EMANUELE MORTON ERDFARB KATIE FIORENZA ARTHUR FISCHMAN SHIRLEY HAAS DORIS HAMMER MARION HEDING HANNAH JACOBS PETER KATRAMADOS ROBERT KUHN LILLIAN KURSHNER DORIS LEWIS RITA PONZINI MARION RINGEL FRANK RUFFNER KATHERINE SIMPSON ELSIE STAUCH ETHEL TENCH BENNIE THORNTON JOSHUA WEISBROD WS - . 1 - Www KAW ff 4 ASN I i A L1 M M Top Row: W.
