,I-1lZ4Ifo'c7 of Cmaf cgivfe At the end of this term Mr. Johnson, West Side's first principal, will accept the position as assistant superintendent, so at this time we should like to trace the growth of our school under his guidance. The cornerstone of West Side was laid in 1925. In the original plans the building was to accommodate 1500 students, there were to be class rooms, auditorium, three gyms, laboratories, art rooms, music room, shop, lecture rooms, library, kitchen, serving room, cafeteria, medical room and administration ofhces. The opening date was Septem- ber 14th. At that time Mr. Alan Johnson explained to the students what he expected from each pupil. There were S20 boys enrolled and 273 girls. Now there are 1,263 boys and 807 girls. In 1929 it was necessary to add new wings to the building. In these are 15 class rooms, a book storage room, and physical training rooms. In 1931 a double session was inaugurated, and is still in operation. Although the school was originally to be a Senior High School, accommodating only 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students, it has since become open to freshmen, who attend the afternoon session, together with some of the sopho- mores. One of the first clubs to organize was the German Club. Following in rapid succession came the Glee Club, Boys' and Girls' Service Club, a Dramatic Club, a Hi-Y Club and French, Italian, Spanish and Latin Clubs. In the first orchestra there were 29 musicians, while the band had only 22. The membership of both these organizations has nearly doubled. At that time there was no need for a Library Club because the walls of the library were lined with empty shelves. Now, however, 5,000 books fill these spaces. In 1932 the east mud-hole became a fine play Held. The front campus was once covered with much debris and at one time there was hay so high that the building couldn't be seen. Elm trees once decorated the lawn. The original faculty included the following forty-three teachers: Alanson Alden, Bertha Aldous, Alexander Amant, David Amidon, Charles Austin fdeceasedj, Carl Baumann, Helen Bodwell, Edith Brander, Louise Brayton, Viola Breunig, John Burley, Florence Carrick fdeceasedj , Ruby Carlton, Helen Clarke, Charles Dull, Helen Duncan, Isaac Ellis fweequahicj, Emma Frost, Mildred Galluba fdeceasedj, Janice Gibson Qleftj, Benjamin Haggett, Bernice Hamilton, Ray Hart Qdeceasedj, Emma Herron QEast Side Highj, Reyburn Higgins Qweequahicj, Gertrude Hook fleftj, Charles Horr Qleftj, Ethel Jacobs, Max Katzin, Hazel Lantz, Joseph Liddy, Florence Merville, William Milwitzky, Mary Motzenbecker, Paul Oliver Chead of music in cityj, George Orner, Blanche Pridham, Katherine Quinn, John Reed, Armand Rehrn fCentral Highj, Ruth Safford Qleftj, Elmer Strouse, Adele Wilson CMrs. Levinej. Since 1926, the faculty has increased to 92.
