It seems fitting that yours should be the first-as well as the last-class, in whose Year Book I should have a part, for we leave West Side together. Your commencement is also mine. The years that I have spent here at the school have all been happy ones. You too, I hope, have found pleasure in your stay. I know that we leave with regret. I trust that in the days to come we shall find a like enjoyment in our work whatever it may be, that we shall have the courage to carry on against all obstacles that we may meet, and that at last we may find that some of our hopes and dreams have become realities. And so-good-bye and good luck. alfan y0Al'l'.40l4 ,I-1lZ4Ifo'c7 of Cmaf cgivfe At the end of this term Mr. Johnson, West Side's first principal, will accept the position as assistant superintendent, so at this time we should like to trace the growth of our school under his guidance. The cornerstone of West Side was laid in 1925. In the original plans the building was to accommodate 1500 students, there were to be class rooms, auditorium, three gyms, laboratories, art rooms, music room, shop, lecture rooms, library, kitchen, serving room, cafeteria, medical room and administration ofhces. The opening date was Septem- ber 14th. At that time Mr. Alan Johnson explained to the students what he expected from each pupil. There were S20 boys enrolled and 273 girls. Now there are 1,263 boys and 807 girls. In 1929 it was necessary to add new wings to the building. In these are 15 class rooms, a book storage room, and physical training rooms. In 1931 a double session was inaugurated, and is still in operation. Although the school was originally to be a Senior High School, accommodating only 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students, it has since become open to freshmen, who attend the afternoon session, together with some of the sopho- mores. One of the first clubs to organize was the German Club. Following in rapid succession came the Glee Club, Boys' and Girls' Service Club, a Dramatic Club, a Hi-Y Club and French, Italian, Spanish and Latin Clubs. In the first orchestra there were 29 musicians, while the band had only 22. The membership of both these organizations has nearly doubled. At that time there was no need for a Library Club because the walls of the library were lined with empty shelves. Now, however, 5,000 books fill these spaces. In 1932 the east mud-hole became a fine play Held. The front campus was once covered with much debris and at one time there was hay so high that the building couldn't be seen. Elm trees once decorated the lawn. The original faculty included the following forty-three teachers: Alanson Alden, Bertha Aldous, Alexander Amant, David Amidon, Charles Austin fdeceasedj, Carl Baumann, Helen Bodwell, Edith Brander, Louise Brayton, Viola Breunig, John Burley, Florence Carrick fdeceasedj , Ruby Carlton, Helen Clarke, Charles Dull, Helen Duncan, Isaac Ellis fweequahicj, Emma Frost, Mildred Galluba fdeceasedj, Janice Gibson Qleftj, Benjamin Haggett, Bernice Hamilton, Ray Hart Qdeceasedj, Emma Herron QEast Side Highj, Reyburn Higgins Qweequahicj, Gertrude Hook fleftj, Charles Horr Qleftj, Ethel Jacobs, Max Katzin, Hazel Lantz, Joseph Liddy, Florence Merville, William Milwitzky, Mary Motzenbecker, Paul Oliver Chead of music in cityj, George Orner, Blanche Pridham, Katherine Quinn, John Reed, Armand Rehrn fCentral Highj, Ruth Safford Qleftj, Elmer Strouse, Adele Wilson CMrs. Levinej. Never before in the history of West Side did a show go over with such Cshall we say, lapsing into the vernacularj a bang. The class has set a precedent by giving a performance for which the students were entirely responsible, under the loyal guidance of Miss Hedden and Mr. McGreal. The orchestra started off with an overture of swing tunes. This was followed by that amusing two-act comedy The Red Lampi' directed by Ruth Kornfeld. The cast which gave this play its delightful touch was as follows: Robert Dickinson, Alan John- son, Tobey Kroll, Jack Preston, Edith Teitelbaum, and Evelyn Lachman. While the audience was recovering from their laughter and the scene was being changed for the dance revue that was to follow, Genevieve Chiappinelli, accompanied by Albina Longo, rendered a violin solo. julia Atrochin, who was directress of the singing, came out from behind that role and sang for us Ah, Sweet Mystery of Lifef' By this time our stage was set and the original revue, written by Howard Webb and Howard Sable, was under way. That lively tune Plenty of Money and You started the oncoming chorus composed of Doris Arnold, Sabina Bobrowski, Helen Chapman, Rose Haberman, Virginia Jackson, Laura Katzenel, Jane McGovern, Lucille Millard, Shirley Stamer, Robert Dickinson, Alan Johnson, Sol Kahn, Jack Kohn, Irving Popper, Howard Sable, Albert Ruccione, Otto Unsinn and Charles Miller. The chorus divided and there disclosed Ruth Kornfeld and Howard Webb ready to 'rap-tap on wood.' These two were in perfect harmony as they did an original routine. Following this Julia Atrochin entered in a Chinese costume and sang East Is Westf' Then a cho-cho-cho-cho-na no ha ne to, or shall I say in English, the Chinese num- ber was done with beauty and grace. The choreography was by Ruth Kornfeld and the dancers were Joan Casey, Rose Groll, Tobey Kroll, and Edith Teitelbaum. Robert O'Donnell, the singing waiter, and Terry Fox, that hilarious 'dancing lady,' did move their audience, in fact, they were almost in the aisle when Bob finished singing his number to Terry. That along with another number I shall mention in a few minutes, will go down in history and be remembered till the last syllable of recorded time. Every class must have a composer. and for the class of ,37 we name Harold Rackin, whose original numbers, sung by Robert Croken and Catherine Frisco and danced to by Margaret Strebinger, added immensely to the enjoyment of the audience. Poor Richard johnson, the lonely professor of great renown, tried to learn some rhythm from our hilarious dancing lady, Terry Fox, while Lorraine Zvonar sang He Ain't Got Rhythm . In contrastito this was a number conceived by our own Fred Astaire, Howard Webb, who was assisted by six lovely little tappers, namely: Margaret Byrne, Margaret Cauield, Rita Gould, Evelyn Herman, Catherine Kelly and Alice McConnell. A novelty dance, or should I say to be correct, an acrobatic dance performed with grace and skill by Lillian Sanders was next on the program. From behind the curtain came the chanting of the melodious song Chole. The students who lent their voices to this arrangement were: Lessie Alexander, Selma Berry Evalyn Crowell, Rose Gore, Goldie Moore, Vera Roberts, Lucy Winckler, Charles Alston, James Coxson, Nathan Bell, Winston Beverley, Clifford Holmes, Eugene Johnson, Charles Ellis, James Pratt. Lessie Alexander, usually our rhythm girl, played another role and did a tap toe dance that was indeed excellent. You may remember a few paragraphs back I said that Terry ,Fox along with another number would be remembered till the last syllable of recorded time. Well, that number was sung by Goldie Moore. It was really breath-taking and, not exaggerating, held the audience spell-bound. Vera Roberts, with the aid of Lessie Alexander, Evalyn Crowell, and Selma Berry, ended the show with a rhythmic tap dance as the chorus sang Slumming on Park Avenue. As Shakespeare once said We have our entrances and our exits. Well we have made our entrance, now let us make our exit. There were some who did not display their talents before the curtain but who worked untiringly behind it. Ruth Anzis, John Curcia, Effie Farnow, Richard Johnson, Gertrude Morganroth, Harold Rackin and Rocco Ricciardi, worked on the scenery that lent color and beauty to the set. To Betty Bugie, Edward Donnelly, Frances Gordon, Frank Judge, Victor Palchevski and Rocco Tenaglia who laboriously worked backstage, our sincere gratitude. Luther Cloud, Joseph Bischoff, Robert McGreal, Robert Pfeifer and Jack Preston were respon- sible for the fine lighting effects. Costumes for the dances were designed and made by Miriam Hoffmann. Again to our loyal faculty advisers may we say it was a pleasure to work with you and for you. Cflciaizi ' Olly West Side, Our Alma Mater, Mother of Youth, Your Lamp has conquered shadow Shown us light and truth. We leave your portals With hopes so highg We'll hail thy glory- E'en unto the sky. You'll share our every triumph, You'll share our fame, Our deeds will add new glory Ever to thy name. So do we humbly offer These vows to you Though fate may choose to part We are ever true. Through life's dark labyrinth We may travel farg Knowledge is our weapon, You're our guiding star, So with these words of parting Ring the final bell. We go to face the world Goodbye to you-Farewell. 1 A. , is -I k eat lat? September 11, 1933. Today we entered West Side High School, and were we ex- cited! The school is so large, and it takes so long to find the classes. The upper class- men are so big and grown-up, the girls in silk stockings and the boys in real, honest-to- goodness, long pants. The teachers call us Mr.,' and Miss, instead of by our first names. Elevator tickets, freshy, baby, and similar things are all we hear from the Sophs. But they can't make any headway with us! February 1, 1934. 'Educated freshmen,' that is what we are! We had fun last year marching in the N.R.A. parade, all dolled up in green and white. Miss Frost's home room showed real initiative, writing her a book that she still displays. We're active too, joining clubs and other extra-curricular affairs. It's grand being able to boss the 1B's-one of our greatest pleasures! September 10, 1934. Imagine the nerve of the 'clever' Senior who said we were wise fools! But we are elated Qnew wordj at being Sophomores, on the morning session. How nice it is to have new subjects with new teachersg though everyone says that Geometry is so hard. We're half asleep anyway, it is so hard to get up on time. How- ever, a whole afternoon free makes up for that. February 4, 1935. School is getting sort of boring-with so much work that seems endless! We loved the exciting football games, though. We're the City Champs! The upper classmen are more familiar to us already, and it seems as though we should graduate soon. just think--five full months till vacation! September 9, 1935. Hurrah! We're Juniors! This past year we all celebrated the Tercentennial Anniversary of High School Education in the U. S., but this day is our half-way mark. How time flies! What fun getting new schedules and wasting time with books and cards, but we hope the new teachers are lenient with the assignments- even though it's for our 'own good.' QNQ free afternoons now-we're in too many clubs.j February 3, 1936. Our football team won the city championship again, unde- feated and untied. In a year and a half we'll graduate. Everyone is joining a lot of clubs so as to have them put in the yearbook. The work is getting harder-but we don't worry too much about that! We just can't get used to the sound of the language of Chaucer. September 14, 1936. We're sophisticated Seniors with one more year to go! But all of our home rooms have been changed and many of us are separated from our friends. The 4A's are selling pins and feathers, and we will support them fully Qto get in practice for next termj . February 1, 1937. The highest class in the school! We gave a reception for the graduates which was delightful. 1Our new president had to don a burlap sack and climb a gym rope.j They turned over the Lamp and the assembly seats of honor to us. Pat Conforti is our guiding light, with Joan Casey, Agnes White, Bob Bush, and fourteen senators to aid him. Since our graduation is a milestone-the twentieth commencement of West Side High School-we plan to outdo every other class. Jlllle 20, 1937. Classes are finished. Our show, Swing Fever, was the biggest success known in West Side, thanks to our new publicity campaign and our wonderful directors. The yearbook is completed, our dances were lovely, and our high school career is all over but the shouting-and walking up to receive our diplomas! . . . Goodbye West Side. The class of June, '37, has just terminated four of the happiest years of its life. QCJ HELP WANTED Mal, Female Pupils-for elite school of osculation only men between the ages of 19 Sz 25 need apply. The popu- larity of the sport from the view point of a few is due to the people's knowledge of the rules of the game. Mr. Reilly who has been doing a good job with our boys and we hope will continue to do so. He is a strong advocator of sportsmanship which is noticeable in his teams. The team is captained by Mike Melack and Pete Piniazik who have served two terms on the team. 1 TENNIS The tennis team under Mr. Spear and the coaching of Abe Belgard looks forward to a successful year. There is strong competition for first and second positions on the team which is an exceedingly good sign. TRACK Mr. Reed should be complimented on his good work after taking over the track team. The Board of Education Meet brought out the strength of our team. So far it looks like a well balanced squad. CROSS-COUNTRY Although our cross-country team placed second in the city meet it turned in the best performance of any cross-country team in the history of West Side. This year's harriers succeeded in defeating Central, last year's city and state cross-country title holders. It was through Mr. Bauman's coaching ability that the team was able to achieve its victories. The squad was characterized by its good sportsmanship and team spirit. SWIMMING Under the able advisership of Mr. Noll and the coaching ability of Benny Dispen- siere, the West Side natators came through to take second place in the city swimming meet. For the season the team has turned in a record of seven wins and ten losses. Out- standing among the team were Captain Frank Monaco and Terry Fox, who captured two first places in the city meet. Twelve men of the team were awarded their letters for winning at least twenty points and participating in at least three quarters of the meets. FOOTBALL Although our team did not win the city championship, it did train a good squad of boys for next year. This yearis team was marked for its cooperative spirit. The Rough Riders fought clean and hard while the school showed its loyalty by supporting the team. Coach Liddy has started a football club in which he is developing material for next year's squad. . I 5 .122 1' -rw. C - Cat, ART CLUB Miss O'Sullivau, Faculty Adviser An appreciation of the fine arts is encouraged for members of the art club. They are privileged to engage in any form of artistic handiwork they desire. Thus many inter- esting pieces of creative art have been produced. This group has made some fine patterns on linoleums, and created unique fashions, and has done lovely paintings, drawings, and bits of sculptoring. Too, they assist with any art work which is needed by the other organizations of the school. , CHESS AND CHECKER CLUB Mr. Holee, Faculty Adviser Sidney Sherzer, President Jack Preston, Vice President Jeanne Klein, Secretary The Chess and Checker Club aims to develop a life-time hobby for its members. A chess and checker team, composed of the more proficient members, has been successful in local and suburban competition. CRAFT CLUB Mr. Strouse, Faculty Adviser One of the most industrious groups in the school is the Craft Club. Members meet for two periods every week to make interesting patterns, bracelets, trays, and clips, molds from various metals, and carved from leathers. This work affords application of true ability. DRAMATIC CLUB Miss Vitello, Faculty Adviser Ruth Kornfeld, Chairman Betty Allsopp, Secretary When an actor speaks his lines from the stage, it is only with the aid of many unseen assistants that he is able to convey satisfactorily the part to the audience. It is the purpose of the dramatic club to train the members in lighting effects, settings, make- up, and costuming, as well as the actual work upon the stage. This year, special atten- tion was paid to pantomime, one-act and current plays. A special group was selected to train students in public address and diction. - GIRLS' SERVICE CLUB Miss Frost, Faculty Adviser Joan Casey, President Grace Reilly, Vice-President Virginia Price, Secretary Rose Haberman, Treasurer I'm in the office first period while you help Miss Carlton and Jane helps Miss Mot- zenbecker, states a service leaguer, telling the various duties of the club members. The welfare work of the girls is climaxed by the sponsoring of the annual old clothes drive to which the entire school contributes. The fifty members of the club must be of good scholastic standing and approved by a board of the faculty. GIRLS' SOCIAL WELFARE CLUB Miss K. Quinn, Faculty Adviser Arline Lindy, President Angelina Rizzuto, Vice-President Jeanne Klein, Secretary Hilda Solomon, Treasurer This charitable group of girls work entirely for the good of others. They have given many parties for the children of the Home for the Friendless, and have given great aid to the Red Cross at various times this year. THE GUIGNOL Mr. Brenman, Faculty Adviser Janice Neff, Secretary The guignol group has found that an interesting method for the practical adaptation of the French language is to stage marionette shows in which all the characters speak French and wear native dress. The puppetcers have made their own delightful dolls and costumes and have constructed a stage, complete with lighting, for these performances. Le Cuvier was produced for the meeting of the Interscholastic French Association. LIBRARY CLUB Miss Merville, Faculty Adviser Robert Rich, President June Dickson, Vice-President Kathryn Burger, Secretary Virginia Price, Treasurer As we enter the library, we notice a large Desk, furnished with a vase of flowers and several copies of the latest novels. Behind this desk each period someone is ready to check your books. There are twenty-three students elected each term to assist the librari- an in her many duties. At the monthly meetings of the club, literary topics are discussed. MATH CLUB Miss Keller, Faculty Adviser Leonard Pettiti, President Shirley Stamer, Vice-President Hilda Solomon, Secretary Henry Webb, Treasurer Math Club members engage in many interesting discussions on difficult problems, graphs, riddles, and statistics that require mathematical application. A medal will be presented to the outstanding math student of every graduating class starting with our class of June, '37. Q PHOTO CLUB Mr. Oruer, Faculty Adviser Alan Johnson, President Hindley Mendelsohn, Secretary-Treasurer Smashing through right tackle, the half back gains five yards for a first down. While the would-be expert in the stands explains it all to the bewildered girl-friend, action shots of the plays are being taken by the photo club members. Later, the films are unreeled in the team room to correct misplays and show the men how they made their errors. Beside taking pictures of school activities, the club has its own dark room in school, where members learn the art of developing pictures. QUILL AND SAND Miss Poole, Faculty Adviser Herbert Gersten, President Lydia Casarella, Vice-President Eva Higgins-Gertrude Morganroth: Secretary Viola Aundall, Treasurer The as irin attem ts of emb ro-novelists, oets, and dramatists of the school are P g I P X P ' brought to the meetings of the Quill and Sand for the correction and approval of un- biased student audience. The club's main activities this year were a spelling bee, in which the entire school was invited to participate, and the presentation of the original play, Trash, and What Comes of It. ' TABLE TENNIS Miss H edden, Faculty Adviser H joan Casey, Secretary-Treasurer When table tennis members are at the table, they usually reduce! Using celluloid balls in lieu of meat balls, the members play on the courts of four lunch tables up in the cafeteria. This club has no formal meetings, but requires members to chase under the table after the elusive ball. When not competing against local teams, the paddlers bat the ball to improve their own play. -.l.l.l-1- Any student really interested in a language is not satisfied with preliminary classroom instruction. In order for him to fully understand the language, it is necessary for him to delve into the history of the particular country, to study the traits and native customs of the people, and to have a fair comprehension of them. It is for this purpose that the school language clubs are formed. The student of today wants an understanding of foreign tongues. Clear interpretation leads to clearer understanding and international peace! FRENCH CLUB Mr. Brefimau, Faculty Adviser ' Lee Zappulla, President Rita Gould, Vice-President Betty Allsopp, Sesretary Sidney Goff, Treasurer GERMAN CLUB Mr. Alden, Faculty Adviser Frederick Knapp, President Louis De Filippis, Vice-President Sabina Bobrowski, Secretary Ruth Hof, Treasurer ITALIAN CLUB Mr. De Cristofero, Faculty Adviser Italo W. FROST laaf anvf Qeafamenf Class Will West Side High School June 30, 1937 To whom it may concern: We, the West Side High School graduating class of 1937, being a highly salubrious and integral state of mind, uninfluenced by prejudice or similar forms of partiality, do, in accord with the tradition of each graduating class, formulate our last will and testa- ment as a means of disposal of our accumulative property, possessions and privileges. It is with deliberation that we bequeath to the several divisions of the students and faculty the consequent duties and obligations. To the Freshmen, we offer the inspiring atmosphere induced by sitting for the first time in the auditorium, reading the apothem, l'Education is the ambition and hope of America. It will manifest in you a desire for studious achievement. Of course, you may accident- ally leave your textbooks in your lockers so you cannot do your home work. To the Sopbomores, goes a bequeathment of optimistic trial, dismal failure and infinite oppression. You shall attempt to cut and, lacking the proper repertoire of a professional cutter, your attempts will invite failure. Adamantine pedagogues will force you on one half mile itinerary around the building, rather than have you go 424, inches in the wrong direction. Last but not least Qfar from the leastj you will awake to the penetrating odors emanating from the chem. lab. If you are of a sufficiently high sophomoric cali- bre, you will pass these minor irritations by and prepare to reap your harvest of Fun in your junior and senior years. To the juniors, we bequeath the right of assuming the potent position of potentiates. You may roll marbles down the floor and stamp your feet in study, leave milk bottles strewn over the lunch room and if you dare, even cut with impunity. Finally, you may peruse the rights of seniors and revel in the joy of anticipation of privileges to come. To the Seniors, we leave this extensive group of bequeathments, henceforth to be known as Divine Rights of Seniorsf, They may use the front door to their heart,s content except when a teacher is looking, may ascend down stairways and vice-versa, possess the exclusive right of selling lunchroom, library, and elevator tickets to freshmen, and may perpetrate as they see Ht any notion which appeals to their sense of nonsense and despite their flagrant obtrusiveness, may each year's crop of seniors grow worse than their prede- cessors, so some day we may anticipate the ideal senior who will be consistent in his in- consistencies and do everything wrong. To the Faculty, we extend our gratitude for having supervised our mistakes during the past four years. In requital, we state, it is through our efforts that ten te1chers will be given a year's furlough this spring, and two will retire. We surely did our best the past four years to wear them out and to make their leaves possible. To the remaining teachers, whom we could not run down suthciently, we leave a ten week vacation and a rest from the graduating class that will extend through perpetuity. Signed, counter-signed, sealed, and registered on this thirtieth day of June, The Senior Class. ,T ?'f'1 ?'V2l '4 W f nf.-ll:- 1 3 V- HES,-YiVgf.' f' 'f' 5951!
