F944 It is the year of our Lord, 1969. The first successful rocket trip to Mars is being attempted. The rocket ship will leave the Earth from the Union City Interstellar Space Port located where the old West Side school building was back in the Dark Ages. The expedition is in charge of Captain Gunther Todter, world renown space and jet explorer. Accompanying the Captain on this voyage are several well-known authoritative people who are going to at last achieve man's greatest realization of an Earth colony on an alien planet, Mars. From our position in the tail we can see these famous people whose names will go down in history as they enter the ship. The co-pilot enters with his Stratospheric helmet open. He is Dick Lynch. The Captain is already aboard and is checking the controls. Now the rest of the crew is coming aboard. Following the co-pilot is the radio and televiser technician Allen Beaty. Advancing after him are the steward, Dick Key, and the capable hostess, Evelyn Wogerman. Next, struggling up the gangplank and carrying all their equipment, are the chief fireman, Larry Midlam, and his faithful assistant and co-worker, Jack Teegarden. Following them are the last of the crew, those angels of mercy and guardians of health, Miss Marcia Wenger and Miss Joyce Noffsinger, decapitating nurses. The civilian personnel are coming aboard. Arm in arm up the gangplank come the handsome idol and publicity fiend, Edward Frazier, with that breath- taking, captivating, lovely, and talented dramatic star of television, Virginia Whitesel. They think they are going on a vacation, but they have a lot to learn. Also on the expedition is the world acclaimed artist and designer, Paula Kay Schoenfeld. Amid the cheering and shouting, advances the Treasurer of the World, William Ray MacDougall, who will audit the books of the ship. Accompanying him and carrying all the heavy books and material is associate trea- surer, Miss Shirley Teaford. Following them come the illustrious Governor, Jens Ericsen Neilsen, Jr. and his wife, the former Donna Lou Jefferis, with the Governor's secretary, Miss Martha Crouse. Now the feather-weight boxing champion of the world, Eli HSluggern Hannoy, and his trainer and promoter, Fred Harlow, are coming up the gangplank. Look who we have now--the Earth's gift to Mars, the three talented and golden throttled thrushes straight from the Copocabana Night Club, Miss Carol Coby, Miss Francis Ellison, and Miss Phyllis Stewart. And now boarding the ship is that lucky average American family picked by Earth to represent it on Mars. The poppa, Mr. Tom Reier, carrying the blue-eyed twins is followed by the momma, the former Miss Nora Dean Brown, who is carrying the youngest. The well-known pianist and soloist, Marlene UBubblesH Wenger followed by her assistant, Mr. Don Sipe, who carries the piano, are about to enter. Also re- presented on this voyage is the judicial department, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the honorable Max Burris who will attempt to keep peace on Mars. MARCIA WENGER leaves the fuzz from her angora sweater. FRED HARLOW wills his ability to argue with teachers to Don Ashley. FRANCIS ELLISON wills her art talent to Barbara Buckingham. JANICE MALOON leaves her skill for going with a fellow who owns a fancy car to Sherron Downing. up the gangplank comes the chief cook and bottle washer, J. P. Haber, ac- companied by Earth's most intellectual dietitian, Miss Myra Coby. And to keep the ladies' hair in place during the fast moving trip, we have Miss Lena Hurd, nationally favorite beautician. In order that Earth may know the exact time and on the spot events of the expedition, Earth is sending its two nosiest news hawks, book reviewer, Janice Maloon, and reporter Allan Dye. The gangplank swings up and the doors are closed and shut tight in preparation for the dangerous journey ahead. The Dedication Services are about finished with the ending of a beautiful song sung by glamorous Beverly Ashley. The distinguished and conservative President of Earth, Robert Thomas Dunn, has finished his dedication address. Now the bottle of champagne will be broken over the hull of the space ship. The honor is done by the President's wife, the first lady of the world, the dignified Judy Heuss. The powerful motors throb, the jets roar, and the crowd stands astonished as the ship zooms out of sight into space. ZWISH--in a twinkling of an eye, the ship enters the Mars atmosphere. All are breathless as they think they are the first Earthlinzs to SHP Mars. They slowly leave the rocket ship, surveying the dark and damp planet surrounding them. It is unbelievable. With a start, one of the passengers points to a puff of smoke coming from behind a crater. lm- mediately they hurry to investigate. All are speechless as they gaze in wonder and amazement at a bearded bedraggled figure of a man leaning over a slim fire and desperately holding a can of Campbell's Pork and Beans. Amazed because they know themselves to be the first humans on Mars, they ask this bit of humanity who he is. Half dazed, he mumbles his name, Jack Hammons.
