AND THE WAR During the past year, this high school has seen son1e llll1HOl'tZ'tl1t changes take place, so that it can better serve in the all-out war effort. Not only have new classes been added. but members of the faculty and student body have taken their places in the ranks of the armed forces. Those leaving this school for the arm y were l'fc. llamilton, former business teacher. Pfc. Hugh Armstrong and Pvt. John Lyons, members of the junior Class. .Xt the begin- ning of the second semester, James Parent entered Ohio State University on an accelerated college plan, and XYilliam lily entered Indiana University under an accelerated program in April. XYilliam XYilson and XYillia1n Caron entered Ball State College. leaving the high school in March. There are others who will probably leave before school begins next fall. So that those interested could learn more about aviation. Mr. Bruinbauglfs phy- sics class was turned i11to a course on pre-avia tion and model-plane building. The physical education classes were extended to meet the requirements of the new physical litness pro- gram. and a class in international radio code was begun during the second semester under the direction of Mr. Barr. The school has also helped in other city defense programs. ln October a war bond drive was launched by the Sub Deb and Boys' Clubs in the form of a contest to see who could sell more stamps and bonds. The boys helped in the scrap metal and paper sal- vage drives, and the girls in the home economics classes made arinbands for the blackout officials. Members of the student body, along with the teachers. have helped in the ration- ing of sugar, fuel oil. and canned goods. Social hours were held in which the admission was either a tin can or a defense stamp. In the spring, a basketball tournament between classes was held. The proceeds, a total of sixty dollars. were donated to the Red Cross, U. C. H.
