It has chapters all over the United States. Membership in this Society is one of the highest honors a school can pay its students. The Society upholds its place as the leader of all school organiza- tions by endeavoring to instill its four principles in not only its members but the student body of the school, and by being a service organization to the school. One of its objectives is to raise money for scholarships for some of its Senior members to use toward fur- thering their education. Under the guidance of our faculty advisor, Miss T ruscott, and officers: President, Carl Borchertg Vice -Presidentjohn Phaleng Sec- retary, Dorothy I-Ialmg and Treasurer, Frank Rigag the Amana Chapter has studied to fulfill its responsibilities and aims. We are proud to be of service to the student body, our school, and the community. 58 r. ational Honor Society ROW 1: D. Webb, J. Morgan, A. Heywood, J. Becker, W. Bedore, J. Lang. ROW 2: A. In addition to ser- vices rendered the school throughout the year, this group strives, by its daily example, to foster an enthusiasm for good scholarship throughout the junior high schoolg to encourage all students to ren- der service to the school and to the commtmityg and to encourage all students to try to develop strength of character. While the students do work hard during the year, fun is had by all, especially at the fall and spring installation dances. 59 Discussion Club ROW 1: F. Riga, N. Tomchuck, C. Borchert, I. Phalen, W. During that time we have added some of the less common instruments, such as the oboes, the flutes, the piccolo, the bassoons, the bass and alto clarinets. The addition of these instruments has given our band a fuller and more unique sound. We have raised the standard of the music we play from the very simple selections to the more complex concert selections played only by the more advanced high school bands. This year we combined the use of the voice with band accompani- ment in our very interesting rendition of the Gettysburg Address . As a school service organization, we have played at football games, pep rallies, and assemblies. We have provided entertainment for the local P. T. A. 's and have given concerts for the elementary school children. 70 Band ROW 1: J. Letina, N. Scheurnan, C. Dufrane, L. Reukauf, N. Tomchuck, T. Bihr, R. Szczepanski. ROW 2 C. Cosandier, T. McNeill, N. This unique group is composed of many different types of instruments rang- ing from those of very low pitch to those of Very high pitch. Because this is not a standard combination of in- struments, all of the compositions played have to be specially arranged. These arrangements are written by our capable director, Mr. Castle and by student personnel in the ensemble. The many areas covered on our program is clearly demonstrated by the pictures that follow. The success of our teams speaks for itself. We wish to take this opportunity to congratulate sincerely the partici- pants in our program, not only for their successful competition but also for the outstanding manner in which they have competed. Our sincere thanks go to the student body as a whole for the faithful support of our program and our recognition of their many displays of true sportsmanship . Louder still were the cheers of the crowds as West Seneca emerged victorious, defeating Orchard Park 14 to 12. ln this and subsequent games, the team, under the able coaching of Mr. B. Hawkes and physical education director, Mr. G. Robinson, the Indians displayed the traditional West Seneca do or die spirit. We at West Seneca do not measure our success only in scores. We admired the lively enthusiasm and sportsmanship of our players, captained by Ray Davies and Jack Spencer. Fuller, F. Stevens, H. Gossel C INNING or losing, the basketball team always has the support of the West Seneca student body. While the 1954 team's record might not look so im- pressive, each game was a thrill, for the team members were scrappy but clean fightersg despite handicaps, they showed a fine knowledge of basketball, an en- thusiasm for the game, perseverance under fire, and good, clean sportsmanship. The eyes of the school in each game turned first to Roy Fuller, high man with a score of 172, and then to Dick Kingsbury, who was second top-score man with 162 points. Other seniors who made up the backbone of this year's team were G. Spen- cer, W. Bettcher, R. Swan and H. Gossel. While we are always sorry to see our experienced players go, we are hope- fully looking to the return of such varsity players as: F . Stevens, E. Brooks, D. Kozak and R. Totaro. There were exciting moments in every game but certain moments are mem- orable: Dick Kingsbury's tremendous playing in the Amherst gameg R. The lowest scoring man on one team was Don Terkula. Equally promising were Richard Adams and John Phelan. Seen on the green, in addition to the above mentioned, were Ted Mamula and Casey Pryzna. We are confident that under the sponsorship of Mr. Hawkes, the future golfers of W. S. C. H . are going to be a credit to the school and coach. 89 Cheerleaders f e,e e .,,., W z m,e, I .
