The other sections follow the tempo set by the Wconductoru and string sectionu The second division contains the Woodwinds--industrialists, farmers, housewives, students- who supply the necessary tone qualities, the materials without which the theme would not be complete, since first and foremost, ours is a government of the people, Our armed forces make up the brass section. Their powerful tones are heard round the world, guaranteeing us freedom from fear of aggression, backing up the rest of the orchestrao Finally, there is the percussion division including our professional people, and other great leaders, This section serves to point the way to harmonious government by the people, for the peoples The rest of our modern world stands as a critical audience listening to this great unfinished symphony , marveling at the 'WONDER OF AMERICLAQ'- SHOP W5-I1d0WS filled with urldreanled abundance, jobs for those who want Work, country-wide help in disaster, elections without revolutions, a religious atmosphere of many churches, personal freedom for everyoneo This audience is wondering whether, as we continue composing, the notes of our great American Symphony forever will ring true, or whether the attempted Communistic onslaughts will create discord, spoiling our harmony, But true Americans have no fear of striking e wrong note, for every movement in our history proves that our people can'meet, face and conquer any crisiso -ff -4x -e--Cz' 5' J 1 1 1 2 I QL W 2 I -i Q i I 4 l 4 i 1 i 1 i 9 l 1 Q I 2 3 I 1 1 A 4-. 1 N' 'SNS' ......-J ' 1 ' ,nb . They were Inspiration- ists in Germany. They came to Buffalo because they heard there was land for sale at a low price and it was near a good market. In a few months there was a village called Middle Ebenezer, which is now Gardenville. In the meantime two villages of Lower and Upper Ebenezer were growing up. The name Ebenezer means NOur Lord has helped us.N In all governing affairs a council of thirteen elders were present. The village had its own store, school, church and buildings that were needed. The Ebenezers became very good farmers and were known for their onions. , g The families had their own houses, but their meals were served in large central eating houses which could accommodate up to fifty persons. The families were not paid for their work but were given enough for their living expenses. The Ebenezers did not participate in social activities. The only time they got together was at eating time. The young people didn't play with each other. Parties, social gatherings and even music were forbidden. The men wore beards, full trousers, flat crowned hats, but no mustaches. The women wore dresses of dark colors, with full skirts with broad bands at the waist. A shawl and bonnet were added to their outfit. The towns grew. They needed more land but the value had risen. The elders thought it best to move to the West where the land was still cheap. There was a more specific reason for going, though. Buffalo gave more worldly attractions and temptations for the young people. They moved to Amana, Iowa, where they now live and are very successful in making refrigerators, woolen goods, and other products. Today they are called Amanas. They own and i-1 eat in their own houses and work ericans. Q . nirigii :hillzTigEfa,I14:: 'jfjjg:-W - 'J g 1 1 1 ww n M19 . gidfrh'-111 F I I gjygraf V 11? --M A -, I .E nb -V V' 4, , hurt? The baseball team, under Coach Ryan, climaxed a very successful season by sweeping their inter-divisional playoff series with Eden and thereby winning the Southern Erie County League all-round and Class A Championships. The boys compiled an enviable record of ten straight victories at one time during the season. In a tense and thrill-packed struggle at Chestnut Ridge Park, West Seneca was defeated 8-6 by Hamburg High, Northern Erie County titlists for the county championship and the right to enter the sectional playoffs. Everett CBudD Murray who had one of the top high school pitching records in Western New York, suffered his first loss of the season in this game after having tvrirled nine consecutive wins. Looxruo THEM oven Fon 1950 Remember: Jerry Springer's distance clout at Green Lake tying the score l-l and giving West Seneca a chance to win in extra innings, Joe M'umm's towering drive over the local fence at Ebenezer, Dave Pearce's long homer in the playoff game at Chestnut Ridge, Bud Murray's two game shutout of Eden, league winners , Jack Zimmermams clutch hitting, especially of doubles, - that day in assembly when the championship trophy was presented to Captain-elect Murray with the entire team proudly looking on, --- the heartbreak in the playoff game with Hamburg in which the bases were loaded twice in the last two innings only to remain that way, and last but not least, that rare gem of baseball, that sensational triple play, the only one in the league's history, in which Jack Zimmerman and Dave Pearce combined to retire Sloan without a run after they had filled the bases with no outs. q-- Sf--i West West West West West West West West I . , ,--, , ....- .-H., -,....D....., .,,.,........-v,....., Mvv......lv, Rotterman, 2nd row: Mr. Abrams, Schibbler, Glinski, Simpson, Yea, Priore, Pearce, Mr. Robinson. Up from the Junior Varsity however, came much needed help in the fonn of Dave Pearce, Don Priore, Hank Piegza, Wally Simpson and Dick Hotterman, Mr. Robinson and nr. Abrams combined their time, efforts and basketball knowledge in coaching both the J. V. and Varsity basketball teams for the 1950-El season. Dave Pearce emassed l37 points to emerge as top scorer for the entire season--and his 2l points against Angola were high for any one game. The second Gowanda game was a thriller which was finally won by West Seneca in the closing seconds 35'3h. The services of Ed Doerfel, playing his first year of Varsity ball, were lost late in the season as he exchanged uniforms--basketball for military. Orchard Park's invading league champions were pressed to the limit before eking out a last quarter victory. Bud Knuth, in his P. G. year, earned his varsity W to become a major letter winner in three sports--football, basketball, and baseball. The loss to Sloan, traditional rivals, on our homecourt was a heartbreaker. Our quintet held a commanding lead in the early stages of the game only to see it ebb away. Speaking of rebounds, Glinski, Simpson, and Yea should do their share of controlling backboards next year. The outlook for the 1951-S2 season is indeed bright with the prospective return of stellar sophomore's Bill Glinski and Joe Yea, along with such proven performers as Pearce, Priore and Simpson. These five lettermen should be ably supported by those graduating from the J. V. ranks, perhaps even pressed to retain their varsity recognition.
