As a matter of fact, however, the memory it- self is a very unreliable instrumentg it chooses to remember some things and forget others, and the reason for the choices, if there be one, is difficult to discover. Many a high school pupil, as he participates in some school event, says, 'Tll never forget this experience ! Or he may think, 'Tll always remem- ber so and so F' But twenty or thirty years later these events and people may have been cast aside by a capricious memory. A part of us, once so im- portant, is utterly gone. Utterly? No, not quite. There will always be the Kimtah, with its living memories, to bring back to us one of the most fascinating and unreal periods of our lives-the time of adolescence. You probably will recall old friends, maybe an ex-girl friend or boy friend, perhaps a teacher who helped you realize how important your education would be to you. Undoubtedly you will remember events that were of great importance to you, the dances, athletic contests, and other activities in and out of school. These will be memories from an im- portant time of your life, a time during which you have grown toward adulthood, a time during which your responsibilities have increased and you have developed greater maturity. All of these will be a part of your memories. Remember, how- ever, that your memories are what you make them. They can be pleasant and gay or they can be dismal and full of regrets that you don't have a chance to relive certain parts of your past. This will always be true, so live your lives today in such a way that tomorrow's memories will be joyful ones. J. Robert Long Mrs Olsen MI Franks Semor Counsellor Activity Co ordinator I 5? it 1. V1 The Counseling Office at West Seattle ex- ists to help ensure that group education will also be individual education. With humility we approach the task of helping students r grow in self-understanding to this ulterior end: self-motivation in the continuing search for the Invisible Light of education. ,Q Cooperative School Government is you. You participate in the roll room, in assem- blies, in card stunts, in pep rallies, and in six commissions: traffic safety, publicity, in-school, affiliations, maintenance, and pep. The purpose of CSG as stated in the pre- amble of the Constitution is: HTO achieve a democratic school government and to pro- vide a medium through which the student is trained to assume his civic responsibilities in our republic. Our youthful energy highlighted this spirit in many successful functions during the year. Among them were the P.-T.A. dance, Senior Play, Christmas Decorations, Clothing Drive, Senior White Day and Senior Breakfast. The most memorable one will always be graduation. The three years we have spent at West Seattle High will serve as a foundation upon which to build the future scientists, technicians, homemakers and leaders to deal with world problems and the pressures of a growing population. The Senior Class extends sincerest thanks and appreciation to Mr. Christophersen for his un- ceasing efforts in our behalf. The slogans Democracy be- gins in self controli' and Knowledge - Initiative - Common Good, are the building blocks of sound citizenship. One of the main goals of C, S. G. is to give every student the chance to attain these fundamentals of citizenship. The members of the C.S.G. Cabinet, the Student Council, the Commis- sions, and the faculty advisors have all worked to give everyone at West Seattle a good year. However, the keynote of C.S.G., co-operation, holds the key to success. Most of our projects have been well supported, but the suc- cess of the projects is not as important as what we learn from them and how we apply what we learn. The ultimate success of C.S.G. is up to each and every student at West Seattle, with the help of every teacher. If C.S.G. has helped you in any way- if you have learned to work with oth- ers or if you remember the slogans on the beams and apply them-then it is well worthwhile. Mike Molvar C.S.G. REYNOLDS Szmrise at Campobello was presented at West Seattle High School on May 5, 6, and 7. It marked the first time this play was used in an amateur production since its presentation on Broadway. The dramatic story depicts the struggles of Franklin D. Roosevelt to overcome the infantile paralysis that threatened to cheat him of a fabulous career that could result in the Presidency of the United States. Timely political discussions plus a heartwarming personal conflict made a superlative production. WSW K CAST: Anna Roosevelt . . Eleanor Roosevelt . Franklin Roosevelt, Jr. James Roosevelt . . Two divisions were formed, teams playing each member of their own league twice and each member of the other league once. West Seattle finished second in the South Division. Since the Metro League was allowed to send three teams to the state tournament, a league play- off was necessary. The two top teams of each league met in a special doubleheader at the Hec Edmundsen Pavilion. The first place teams played to determine first and second places, and the second place teams from both leagues played to determine overall league standings. Ballard beat Garfield, taking first place, but both teams were sent to the state tournament. The West Seattle-Roosevelt game decided the third tourney representative. The tall, strong Roosevelt team overcame with difficulty the fast-playing West Seattle Indians. We played a good game, but they were too much for us. ln regular season play, West Seattle finished fourth overall with a 10-5 record, and placed Tom Whalen on the all-city second team, with Mike Healy and Jim Tarabochia receiving all-city-honorable mention.
