While striving to develop a spirit of cooperation within the school, C.S.G. specifically at- tempts to satisfy student needs through cabinet, the com- missions, and the 'student council, however it directly or indirectly operates through every facet of school life. C.S.G. is You! has been our theme this year. We have tried to emphasize its significance through the stu- dent council and the roll rooms, and through activities such as the Student Leadership Conference, the Paddle Battle, and Pep Assemblies. Our degree of success or fail- ure must be determined by individual consideration and iudgment, yet we will not fail to feel a certain sense of accomplishment if our efforts have managed to leave West Seattle High a better school to attend. Spell it write, Ron. We never make mistakes Boys' Club is an organization which creates better student-faculty relationships. It is a bridge that serves as a means of transmitting ideas, thus enabling and creating a better understanding between the student and his advisors. In addition, such an organization assists in developing unity. The most obvious indications of this are the traditional White Shirt Day, and representative meetings, where ideas are coordinated. An important part of every school program is its social and sports activities, which not only build unity, but teach good sportsmanship and stimulate the social developf ment of each individual. For Boys' Club these activities include the Harvest Moon Ball, the swim meet, the track meet, and an auto show. Basic of all school government is leadership. Through leadership a person learns parliamentary procedure, group process, and speaking before an audience. In Boys' Club, leadership is practiced pri- marily through committee work and roll room representation. The basic principles learned through such an experience are invaluable in the further development ot an individual for future society. MIKE MCRORY President Everything looks better in the evening. The boys in the group worked out of their study halls on lighting and scenery effects, on material shifts and scenery changes in production. F.T.A. inspired students to look into the career of teaching. At the various meetings, plans for college were made, speeches were presented, and talks were given on many phases of teaching. e.PiW., Math Club is composed of students who gain an increase to their knowledge of math and the field of science. Their prd- gram is enriched on the subiects of science and math and the number system by speak- ers and movies. Many ot the students in school this year had growing interests in science study. ' The group had spasmodic meetings and very interesting topics of discussion. Chess Club was a small, but very active group. It met every Thursday and has won the '58 All-City Chess League competition for West Seattle. if g s Moccasin Club consisted of the students in West Seattle who were affiliated with the work of the library. They sponsored many interesting and educational activities throughout the year in which they inspired more constant and careful use of our li- brary. li., 4,,,vi' The girls interested in doing something with their acquired knowledge of clothing, tailoring, and foods, other than every day school work, could have been found partici- pating in various activities of Home Ec. Club which they offered to the entire female population of W. S. at various times during the year. Increasing interest was shown in Ski Club this year. It was certainly a growing club due to the increasing interest in Satur- day skiing. Most of the participants in Ski Club spent Saturday of their weekends in Ski Schools at Summit or Ski Acres. The chief activity of Debate Club was problem-solving discussions with other High Schools on topics such as: irrigation, edu- cation, and foreign relations. This organi- zation gave students an opportunity for discussions and transmitting of ideas other than in school activities. These girls assisted our nurse, Mrs. Fiske, in keeping a record of ailments of our stu- dents. Many girls who have the desire to become nurses had a chance to find out her duties and work by participating in this service. Main office is the practical head of school business administration. To many, it may seem repeti- tious, but to others, especially parents of sophomores and fresh- men, we hope it will serve as a good gulie. First of all, let us consider the' attendance cost of a full season of football. Ordinarily, there are eight games played during this season. For each game, a student will pay 75 cents a ticket. At 75 cents for eight games, he or she will have spent 5 dollars and eighty cents for a full season's enjoyment. As you can see, this is almost as much as the total cost of a Season's Pass. To give another example, there will be 14 games of basketball iplayed this year. Tickets will also lsell for 75 cents each. M V5 fail 1 it I' I 'U There were more than seventy students participating in this year's Pow Wow, with the theme of Space and Witchcraft, The production setting of the Pow Wow was a haunted forest, home of the witch. The first scene con- sisted of an audition of the acts and actors hoping to be admitted into the Pow Wow. The second scene showed the rehearsaiaand the piayers and plans taking shape. The final scene was the actual production with the magician producing the, variousiacts with a wave of his hand. The rehearsals for Pow Wow tasted about two weeks from 3:10 until 7:00 at night. After much hard work mixed with anxiety the students gave West Seattie its 1959 Pow Wow, Hopeless Pocus , Thursday, March 31, Friday and Saturday, April 1 and 2. Because ot the overcrowded condition at James Madison Junior High, a small percentage of the ninth grade roam our halls. Each Freshman has a roll teacher who will advise the student through- out the tour years at West Seattle High. All of the Frosh roll teachers have contributed in acguainting the few members of the Class of l962 with high school lite. Since the Freshmen are a traction ot the Class of l962, they will be completely re-organized in the yearbook next tall. rct5'1tar-T5 n f G Q NG 9 li 'ti 0 c0f 13951 -4139? -UN vit P69 C 1 v,,,1v. 5 A Od'-6x -v9Sk5gaE.9 ueNTLD R M ttihgu T omg ta NN, xFll BFPQNU 1 HR These snapshots take a cross-section of the freshman roll room showing them in action and eager to participate in West Seattle's many activities. ,,,,.s-.asv-f -1-1- 4 3 ff ws-J. However, it took more than heart and an all-city quarterback to pull the redmen through a season in which previous city league records became mere waste paper. A hard- fought season left us in the basement, but tops in West Seattle-one step above our neighbor, Sealth. West SeattIe's chances of placing in the upper bracket looked pretty good after the outcome of the Jamboree. The Indians drew FrankIin's Quakers to play in the fifth quarter. Franklin took the opening kickoff and romped down field for 74 yards, Buzz Crites then took the ball over right guard for the TD. The Indians then took the ball on the 45. As Abbott received the ball from center, he did a left face and fired the ball to Joe Bookter before either line had a chance to move. Bookter then trundled for 52 yards before Crites dropped him on the Franklin 3. Abbott then went through center to grab glory land. Abbott's try for point was good, West Seattle won 7-6. West Seattle finished the season winning only one game-Sealth 13-ofand tieing Queen Anne 6-6. Mike Abbott was the Indians' key player this year, gaining 930 yards-658 were from pass- ing-to lead the city in total offense. Abbott also set a new league record with 57 pass comple- tions. Jim Young led the city in pass receiving, complementing Mike's work. Defeats or not, the boys did have heart with the top inspiration award going to Len Smith. Yes, West Seattle is on the bottom with a record of 1 win and 15 losses. But the story will be different next year because this was WS's year for building. This year's varsity team consisted of only three seniors, the others underclassmen. With eleven lettermen returning next year-well that's next year. This was WS's year for building. The underclassmen took top honors in scoring, Tom Whalen being high man with 161 points followed by Jim Tarabochia with 127. These two also received honorable mention for the all city team. Tarabochia received the team's great honor of being elected for the inspirational award. Although this was not a year noted for record breaking it did see a few of the major ones scrapped. In WS's last game, Queen Anne's Bob Hawkins broke two records: most field goals in a single game, and personally scoring 50 points. Hoop action tipped off with the last iamboree under the present league set-up. The East schools, with Shoreline helping, won the game. Under a proposed plan, Shoreline and Edmonds will ioin the nine city teams to form a Metro League. Unfortunately WS cannot claim the title of champion of West Seattle because of a two game split with Sealth. With the experience gained this year we'll be looking for some fast action and an upper berth next year boys. 2 Q qw.. . A .
