In forewording our spirit of co-operation, we salute Miss Eoleltmud Meinshcaol, Austrian exchange teacher. In West Seattle I have found co-operative students who are lceenly in- terested in what I could tell them about Europe and who were eager to learn the German language. The friendliness that I have experienced in this school will he among my most pleasant memories of the United States. Seniors receive Torch Honor pins What is the West Seattle spirit to which this 1957 Kimtah is dedicated? Is it pep at games, enthusiasm for school activities, loyalty to the school, and pride in its traditions? I dare say that we might all agree that these are some of the outcomes of our school spirit, hut not school spirit itself. When we are searching for the real spirit of a school, aren't we trying to find its essence, its inner meaning? To me, the essence of West Seattle is our respect for knowledge, our respect for people, and our eagerness to work together for the common good. That we love know- ledge is proven again and again hy the tremendous use we make of our library and hy the increasing status of scholarship and the Honor Society. That we respect people is demonstrated by our friendship for all students regardless of race, religion or class. That we strive for the common good is demonstrated hy the Way students and teachers work together thru Cooperative Student Gov- ernment to solve our common problems.
