Our library gives us a place to inquire about this problem and a basis for its solution. As a nucleus of learning, the Lyle Kaye Library at West Seattle l-ligh School is an oasis for all who thirst for knowledge. IE I3 F Q is E F - 'ri .EQ-l ytcr . w E ggiiiii s A Er p I H. As a learning center it fosters a respect for good workmanship along with the thrill of acquiring library skills and ultimate wisdom. In forewording our spirit of co-operation, we salute Miss Eoleltmud Meinshcaol, Austrian exchange teacher. In West Seattle I have found co-operative students who are lceenly in- terested in what I could tell them about Europe and who were eager to learn the German language. The friendliness that I have experienced in this school will he among my most pleasant memories of the United States. May my stay here help to promote the spirit of understanding between our nations. itfblfthfuf Aibbfin U Q ', e She comments on homeland l Native costume adds to class interest Teacher poses for photo She receives honorary membership in Excitement of first American Christmas Girls' Club Dr. Meinschad tells students of far away Austria Seniors receive Torch Honor pins What is the West Seattle spirit to which this 1957 Kimtah is dedicated? Is it pep at games, enthusiasm for school activities, loyalty to the school, and pride in its traditions? I dare say that we might all agree that these are some of the outcomes of our school spirit, hut not school spirit itself. When we are searching for the real spirit of a school, aren't we trying to find its essence, its inner meaning? To me, the essence of West Seattle is our respect for knowledge, our respect for people, and our eagerness to work together for the common good. That we love know- ledge is proven again and again hy the tremendous use we make of our library and hy the increasing status of scholarship and the Honor Society. That we respect people is demonstrated by our friendship for all students regardless of race, religion or class. That we strive for the common good is demonstrated hy the Way students and teachers work together thru Cooperative Student Gov- ernment to solve our common problems. Isn't this the essence and isn't this the spirit of West Seattle High School? CL ,Ei J The spirit of West Seattle is not a thing you can put your finger on. You can't point and say: HThere it isln But that it does exist is a fact beyond question. We see it at athletic contests, where we always have many people from the community supporting our teams. We see it in the summer at the Hi-Yu. We see it in the many active service clubs - oh, it exists all right. And a very good thing it is, too. One of the problems of living in a large city is that one may become foot-loose, lost, rootless, just another member of the lonely crowd. We do not thrive under such conditions, as we have a need to belongg we want to be important parts of the society in which we live. We are grateful that in West Seattle we have a com- munity feeling. We have a place where we belong. We have a home. -ff-AQ f if f p Parents take interest at Open House Who's got the money? IO Talent Assembly Who done it? Active C0u1'1Cil? To illustrate the value of good student-faculty relations and to train the citizens of tomorrow to develop a sense of civic responsibility is the purpose of the Cooperative School Government at West Seattle. Plans for each year's activities are started the preceding summer as the C.S.C. officers and commissioners prepare for the months ahead. Bringing with it the sense of a fresh start, the fall semester begins with an introduction assembly and the develop- ment of new student organizations. Next we enjoyed winning the annual 'Paddle Battle' Seasons' Pass Contest with Ballard High School. Football halftimes, registration, the maintenance prob- lems, publicizing school activities and helping student or- ganizations and planning West Seattle Day, are only a few of the limitless duties which keep the C.S.C. occupied during the year. Seldom are there two words which include so many ideals. For most girls it is regarded as compan- ionship, activities, and enjoyment. The ultimate results of these include development of personality, ability to subordinate selfish interests to the interests of the group, loyalty to classmatesg the school, and to one's own ideals and purposes, interest in the welfare of allg best use of one's own abilities, and ability to sacrifice immediate pleasure to future good. Many successful functions such as Mom-Daughter Banquet, Dads' Night, Christmas Drive, Tolo, Girls' Club Week and numerous others have been sponsored successfully by girls actively participating in the phase which appealed to them most. As we go our separate ways through life, we feel We have given something of ourselves to each other. Neither time nor distance will take away the influence left by the warm traits of personality and comradeship, nor lessen the pleasant memories of joys and happiness we have shared together. To all who have made this year a successful one Girls' Club expresses its thanks. To Mrs. Olsen, the mother of our tribe, we extend our deepest appreciation for her part in making our club a success. Duty inspires one to do a job well, but love inspires one to do it beautifully. It is her love which has and will continue to carry Girls' Club through the years. The squad ended the season as school cham- pions with a fourth place league standing. The Papooses started the year like city cham- pions as they went for a touchdown on the first play of the first game. They won the game 7-6. The team met the tough Garfield squad with enthusiasm, but were licked 28-7. Proving they could come back, the boys beat a determined Roosevelt team, 7-6, in a heavy down- pour. They finished the season with three wins and an equal number of losses. 'lCoke Roberts, coach of the Papooses, stated that the boys were gentlemen and never 'cried' when they got a bad decision, but simply made up their minds to win. Some of the boys showed great promise for next season's varsity squad. FRONT ROW: F. Carley, I. Fulfer, R. Healy, L. Smith, A. Lewis, G. Ross, B. Carlsen. SEMI-CIRCLE: CLeft to rightj C. Watts, E. Bud Pripp, coach of West Seattle's second team, described them as the team that got the bumps as they had to scrimmage against the varsity squad in practice games. The boys did have a league of their own however, and the 1956 season found them in the number four spot in the league standings. The squad won two games, tied one, and lost three. A number of these players will make up the Indian's varsity team next year along with some of the better third team members. Some saw action in the varsity games this season. If hustle is any in- dication of a good team, West Seattle should give a fine account of itself next year. 3rd Team JOE MORTON 1 Senior Forward A11 ' -City Highest single-Year point total in school X -I lustory C242D. Although dropping two of these contests, the Indians showed promise for a first division finish. The two games lost were to Roosevelt and Franklin, two highly -I regarded teams. The remaining five teams in the league have each s ' won one and lost two. At this point, the highlight of the season was the one-hit shut-out by Al Stumpf against Queen Anne, as the Braves triumphed 2-O. In the initial contest, the Indians had to make a comeback after an early defeat, and did, but Carson Olafson of the Quakers hit a grand slam home run that provided an 8-6 win for the Franklin team. Ernie King hit a four bagger for the Indians, but broke his finger and was put out of action for three weeks. The second game revealed Stumpf's pitching ability as the right- hander allowed but one single. Fielding errors plagued West Seattle in the third game at Roosevelt and the Teddies walloped the West Siders 9-4. Some players have displayed ability that should carry them through a great season. These include Seniors Carl Hunter, Dale Bedal, Al Stumpf, Mike Schrammeck, Joe Morton, and Mike Ilohnsrud, Iunior Ernie King, and Sophomore Cary Cribble. Mr. Tetelman and three members of the mural committee, Bob Saito, Ernestine Forschmiedt and Madeline Blitz, admire a scale model of the tile. The unique mural pro- ject was given whole- heartecl support by the entire student body. Be- cause of this enthusiasm, enough money was left over to purchase a seal for the front of the build- ing. Mr. Tetelman and Mr. McBride, of Klee Wyk Studio, constructed and painted the tile. The research concerning the Indians in the West Seattle area was done by Mr. McBride. ,. . es. ., MJ 5. ,1 M3 fig ,,i . . li-lx. tn. 353 as WEE? 'img H a Qs We-5 -Hn. 1 l .ITV . It is the hope of the Kimtah editors and staff that We have recorded this 1956-57 year in such a Way, that its activities can be re- lived with the turning of each page.
