I .fl El0ll PL The lights were dimmed . . . the buzzing and commotion stopped . . the curtains drew back and revealed a gaudily lighted stage . . . a white stair- way, an ugly oil painting over the fireplace, a boarding house for would-be actresses-the setting for Edna Ferber and George Kaufmann's Stage Door. Someone nearby whispered, It's beginning! But no, he was mistaken. What we were seeing, this was the climaiciwe finished product. The play began with the first scratched out lines in the script, the long rehearsals, the pencil sketches of the original gowns we now saw, the charts of the grease paint plan that the make-up squad drew . . . there was no audience the first time the cur- tains drew, exposing half finished props wet with paint and leaning at crazy angles . . . these were the beginning scenes that no audience applauded. Then the play was finished and the applause was long and loud . . . the curtains were drawn together . . . the lights snapped on . . . Stage Door presented by the 1939 senior class was over . . . the audience clap- ped heartily and we hoped that the echo of our clapping would reach back to those beginning scenes. pm 'ISLE

Then came the Great Idea . . . they fthe boys and girls of West Seattlej combined their shows and called it the Pow Wow . . . taken from the Indians which means a big celebration. West Seattle wanted to celebrate each year with a gay, gay show. Now we have, every year, a stage pro- duction of all the talent in the school . . . in the Pow Wow there is drama, danc- ing, music, singing, tumbling, acrobatics, comedies . . . perhaps fun describes it best. The 1939 Pow Wow is over . . . we hope these pictures tell its story.
