I give them a paper stamp, white with green printing, perforated edges . . . they lick the back . . . just a stamp to them. They don't remember a cold blue October day and hot dogs crammed down their throats, made raw from cheering when our hero crossed the enemy goal . . . a stamp gave them that . . . You need two more to be up to date, I said. She gave me two dimes . . . twenty cents to pay for Senior Play night . . . buying cones, hurrying down the aisles, living the drama of Broadway . . . Two dimes . . . I push over two more stamps . . . a baseball game, a track meet, that elated feeling of having won . . . Any more stamps? They are reluctant to give their dimes . . . a dime for those class dances, their pictures in the Kimtah, or maybe the front row seat at a Little Theatre play . . . A freshman comes up with his dime. He says, This will break me, but . . . I tear off another stamp . . . but it will buy him that anticipation of the last few minutes of Thursdays . . . Chinooks are passed out. The freshman licks his stamp . . . does he remember lighted corridors, excited voices, music, laughter -the Pow Wow? He placed the stamp in its separate square and pressed it with his thumb. 1 X
