But our grandfathers have witnessed a tremendous increase in the number and sizes of our schools the country over. Along with this growth has come the development of high school activities. Heretofore most activities had to make their expenses through paid admissions . . . consequently, many small clubs could not exist. Then came the depression . . . students had little money to spend on dances, clubs and games . . . campaigns were continually being put on to encourage students to support the activities. ln some of the progressive eastern schools a stamp plan was adopted . . . it spread to the west . . . in 1933 West Seattle adopted the scheme whereby the more . profitable activities could support the smaller ones. Our science teacher, Victor Larson, sponsored the drive with the help of the 4 , jig.. , e E ai 6 f 1 gl ifwgf stamp clerks. The move began slowly... Someone nearby whispered, It's beginning! But no, he was mistaken. What we were seeing, this was the climaiciwe finished product. The play began with the first scratched out lines in the script, the long rehearsals, the pencil sketches of the original gowns we now saw, the charts of the grease paint plan that the make-up squad drew . . . there was no audience the first time the cur- tains drew, exposing half finished props wet with paint and leaning at crazy angles . . . these were the beginning scenes that no audience applauded. Then the play was finished and the applause was long and loud . . . the curtains were drawn together . . . the lights snapped on . . . Stage Door presented by the 1939 senior class was over . . . the audience clap- ped heartily and we hoped that the echo of our clapping would reach back to those beginning scenes. pm 'ISLE 4, 'I ,.! y . of yn 'ftp- ? Every two or three weeks the Little Theatre offered one of their little plays. Some of the most popular produc- tions this season were Hamlet, Three's a Crowd and Fine Feathers. The Little Theatre has done much to develop an appreciation for drama in West Seattle. I it l. i DRAMA CLUB ' Front: Helen Richardson, Mildred Fearno, Diclc Hag- auist, Thorleif johnsen. Ruth lmmel, Ruth Selset and Howard Hawkins all seem to be wanting her services here. Martha Kindall Editor 1939 KIMTAH To record the activities of the school yearg to show the progress made by students and faculty in educationg to catch the spirit of the school are the purposes of a yearbook. The 1939 Kim- tah staff has endeavored to do these thingsg but during their work of pub- lishing the annual an idea has been conceived by which these purposes could be carried out to the fullest extent. Next year West Seattle can have a magazine of 16 pages to be published monthly, which would allow the staff more time and thought to each club, sport or production. The magazine could give 48 more pages than the present annual, hence more pictures and copy. There would be no need, then, for stiff group pictures of no action. The magazine would be a com- plete record of a year at West Seattle. This idea is new and will require the help and support of the student body and faculty. In this field West Seattle will be a leader. Patty7Malmo Girls Sports y D I G G p 3 Xing? Treasure hunting without a map, without a plan, is time wasted. If you know for what you are looking, if you have a fair idea of where to find it, success is at least half accom- plished. Perhaps the other half of success comes through combining our efforts with those of others. Do you see how our Stamp Plan suggests a method of success for each of us? Suppose we budget our desires and our needs and then each week make a definite contribution of effort and wisdom. Gradually we achieve results because we are joining efforts with others and because WE HAVE A PLAN. REED FULTON Principal .. A at CIS I I J ,1 y I Q Girls' Adviser Mabel Chilberg A H. During freshman year high school was some- thing new and bright and perhaps a trifle be- wildering . . . as sophomores the '39ers wanted to know what made things go 'round-and they were quickly finding out, too . . . and then came the time when they were juniors, big shots, when life was a bowl of cherries and fun-oh, and study, of course . . . all of a sudden the class jumped into the limelight as seniors--top flight . . . to end so soon in graduation . . . and goodbye. But the class of 739 will be remembered . . . as an outstanding West Seattle group . . . for the first Mardi Gras and Field Day, now almost tradition . . . also Freshman Orientation Day . . . characteristic ofthe class was their gradua- tion-smootli, new, fun. E Hill HALL 0F FAME l T The male parade monopolizes the junior class this year and perhaps they're happier that way. Anyway, counselor Stanley Kimball, vice-president jerry Luther, president john Putnam, sponsor Ray Rowe and secretary- treasurer Howard Hawkins get their way about things when they decide the fates of junior dances and activities. 1, . I' fl JUNIORS Already theyire juniors and upperclass- men! They're going to matinee dances with the seniors fthe mark of being a juniorj . . . quite grown up and sophisticated after the young innocence of their sophomore days . . . and they have all the enthusiasm and drive of a class trying to give their school their best. At the junior assembly in the fall, the class of 1940 introduced and developed the idea of planning committees to help solve important but lesser school problems . . . to provide vocational files . . . with the aid of Mr. Rowe and Mr. Kimball the juniors sponsored school dances and had the seniors as guests . . . they gave the Christmas P.-T. Q K 1 v SOPHOMORES Finishing its second lap in beautiful form, the class of 1941 looks like very fine upper- class material . . . they're a class that does things. The sophomores have taken the old fashioned lowness out of their underclass status . . . they have dances . . . they nosed the seniors out for top honors in Field Day . . . they're headed for the top in sports . . . generally they are good students . . . and swell dancers . . . they are represented in nearly every activity in West Seattle. Going into their junior year everyone knows they will bring honor to our school. A sort of round table discussion goes on back of the art portable when the sophomore officers get together. Secretary Beryl Hayes, treasurer Knute Qvale, counselor Helen Dunn, president Bob Truckey, sponsor Warren Mackey, and vice- president Myrtle Dexter decide what's what for the next dance class. .' From a corn roast at Lincoln Park to a trip to Vashon Island, hikes were taken to points all over the city. Hitting the bulls-eye is the aim of archery class members. The season that might have been is the brief description of the 1939 West Seattle foot- ball season. The Indians battled their way through a tough schedule, winning one game, tying one and losing four to tie for eighth place. The seasonis opener, the Redskins held last yearis champions, Cleveland, to a 6-6 tie. In the Garfield game the Indians allowed the Bulldogs to humble them. The only flash came when sophomore Bill Hawkins rifled a 30 yard pass to ,lack Healy for a score. Next came the Broadway game. West Seattle hopes soared as the Indians rocketted through the Bengal line for six points and the game. Ballard applied the brakes to the Redskins with a 7-0 win and Queen Anne followed suit. Playing in the snow, Roosevelt Teddies copped the final game of the season. Leo Sexton, giant tackle, was generally re- garded as one of the best linesmen in the league. .lack Healy, rugged end, was awarded the inspirational player's gold football. , hy .
