It was the first time enough boys had participated so that full varsity and junior varsity squads could be fielded. Although the harriers had little experience, senior Mike Hoffman, juniors Doug Kornmeyer and Todd Groth, along with sophomore Andy Lipski, drove each other to hold the top four team positions in unfixed order throughout the season. Coach LeRoy Krall commented, “We were short on experience, but our work ethic, team spirit, and attitude for improvement more than compensated for this shortcoming. The increased numbers led to outstanding depth which proved essential to our improvement all season.” 1. Team Captain Mike Hoffman strides ahead on his opponent. 2. The season, was one of individual accomplishments, highlighted by the performance of freshman Dannie Premo which earned her the title of Coulee Conference Champion. Senior, Heidi DeRosa together with juniors, Stacy Klos and Lynette Jacobson helped lead the young crew to improvement throughout the year. Coach LeRoy Krall remarked, “Enough can’t be said for this team’s quest for improvement, their attitude toward hard work, and their team spirit. These characteristics played a large part, and will continue to play a large part, in their success.” 1. Lynette Jacobson strives for the finish line. 2. Ending with a 8-2 dual match record as well as a 6-2 conference standing, the squad tied with Onalaska for a second place standing. Highlights throughout the season include a second place finish in the Arcadia Tournament. Later on, the Panthers took the championship trophy at the Sparta Tournament with a 9-2 record for the day. The squad ended their dual match season with a victory over the undefeated Holmen Vikings, but fell to them in the regional competition. With four returning letter winners and many other talented players, Coach Carol Hanson led her girls to a undefeated mid-season record of 10-0. Dick Benate Defense and the new flex offense stunned the opponents. Highlights of the season included defeating the Onalaska Hilltop-pers on the Panthers’ home court. Other contributing seniors include Andy Stegner, Matt Leahy, John Pedretti, Mike Hoffman, Mike Gunther, and B.J. Gostisha. The highlight of the first half of the season was the Panther’s thrashing of Westby, 52-30, before an enthusiastic Parents’ Nigh crowd. The performance of juniors, Jon Johnson and Marc Ertz, and sophomores, Todd Crogan and Gust Byom, has been encouraging. Coach Chuck Ihle comments, “We anticipate being much more competitive as the year progresses.” 1. The Panthers set up their defense against the LaCresent Lancers. 2. Both coaches, from UW-L have had background in gymnastics. The loss of three varsity seniors, and return of only one letter winner and few participants, confronts the team with an uphill struggle. Highlights of the year were individual successes and accomplishments by Annette Graw on varsity beam, Kim Bloss as varsity all-around, Tiffany Huebsch on varsity floor, beam and vault, and Kelli Southall on varsity floor, beam and vault. Annette Graw, Tiffany Huebsch, Nicki Craighead, Christy Indahl, and Nicole Kapusinski comprised the Junior Varsity team. The Grapplers have new coaches this year, with last year’s assistant coach, Ron Scoville, as head coach, and new assistant coach, Terry Hancock. They also have six returning lettermen, senior -Jason Schams, juniors - Chris Schams and Kevin Servais, sophomores - Nick Brickl, Joe Stange and Kevin Thompson. There are only two seniors this year, John Magnu-son and Jason Schams, both have been participating for four years. Magnuson has made considerable improvement and has great dedications to the team. Schams, according to Scoville, has been a great asset and one of the best contributors to the team. The Panthers have been winless so far at midseason. They placed seventh at both the Royall Invite and the Panther Invite, and fifth out of nine at the Onalaska Invite. The Foundation Of A Dynasty Is According to coaches, this year is a learning year where the emphasis is on getting experience. With exceptions of a few bright spots, this has been a painful year of learning for both coaches and wrestlers. Freshman Sam Peterson got first at the Onalaska Invite and is expected to be a great promise for the future. Also, sophomore Kevin Thompson was a champion at the Panther Invite with a mid-season record of 11-4. Thompson has improved greatly from last year and will be very competitive in years to come. The young wrestlers look promising but do not have enough experience. Numbers are too small and result in forfeits. This crash of the Stock Market made an estimated $1 trillion of world-wide wealth disappear. ThS Year proved disastrous for many politicians as well. On May 8, Democratic presidential hopeful, Gary Hart, after being caught by Miami reporters with Donna Rice, announced that he was dropping out of the presidential race. Seven months later, on December 15, he declared that he was reentering the race. Senator Joseph Biden dropped out of the Democratic race after it was proved that he has used other politicians’ speech material. The nation celebrated the 200th Anniversary of the U.S. Constitution. The nomination of Judge Robert Bork and Douglas Ginsberg for the vacant seat on the Supreme Court, brought much concern over the meaning of the Constitution, as well as past drug use by government officials. Both were denied appointment to the Supreme Court. 86 1987 was the eighth year of the war between Iran and Iraq. The United States was deeply involved in policing the Persian Gulf. On May 17, a mistaken attack by an Iraqi fighter killed 37 sailors aboard the USS Stark. Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev brought his concept of openness, Glasnost, to the United States. Both he and President Reagan met in Washington concerning the reduction of nuclear weapons. PTL Leaders Jim and Tammy Baker were forced to resign, by Jerry Falwell, but the Bakers continue to try to regain leadership of the organization. The legitimacy of surrogate motherhood, was put to the test when Mary Beth Whitehead, under a $10,000 contract, gave birth to a baby girl. The child known to the people of the United States as “Baby M”, was to be given to its father William Stern and his wife Elizabeth. Whitehead decided to fight the contract, but lost her case as well as the custody of “Baby M” to the child’s father. The N.B.A. said farewell to Ju- lius Erving, “Dr. J” after a 30,000-point pro basketball career. The World Champion Minnesota Twins were the first team ever to appear on a box of Wheaties. The Stars Stripes brought the America’s Cup back from “Down Under”. The New York Giants defeated the Denver Broncos, 39-20, on January 25 in Super Bowl XXI. NFL players, went on strike at the conclusion of the second week of the season. One game was canceled by the NFL owners, but they brought in carpenters, businessmen, and various football refugees and played what were called the replacement games. People world-wide mourned the deaths of many well known people, such as: CIA Head, William Casey; dancer, Fred Astaire; “The Great One”, comedian, Jackie Gleason; actor Lee Marvin; pianist, Liberace (Died of AIDS); artist, Andy Warhol. 1987 was also the 10th Anniversary of the death of “The King Of Rock-n-Roll”, Elvis Presley. It was also the 25th Anniversary of the death of starlet Marilyn Monroe. Iran Contra Scandal Shakes The Nation The summer of 1987 produced America’s newest hero, Marine Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North. During the first week in July, North testified in front of a Congressional Committee, as well as millions of Americans, that he and other highly ranked government officials participated in a covert operation involving the diversion of funds called the Iran Contra controversy. North told all, leaving no rock unturned, or as he himself put it “I’m telling it all, the good the bad, and the ugly.” During the first two days of testimony, Oliver North managed to win the hearts and minds of most Americans creating what has been called “Olliemania.” He told more about covert operations, the shredding of classified documents, and the comings and goings of high government officials than has ever been told. The one question still unanswered is, “How much, if anything, did the President know?” North admitted to the committee that he shredded documents that told everything of the operations, that he wrote fraudulent letters to important officials, and that he, Admiral John Poindexter and the late CIA head William Casey lied to Congress about the selling of arms to Iran in exchange for hostages. The proceeds were used to support the Nicaraguan rebels known as the Contras. Area News Early in September, Australian industrialist Alan Bond, announced his planning takeover of the G. Heileman Brewing Company, based in LaCrosse. Heileman Chairman Russell Cleary fought by convincing the Wisconsin State Legislature to pass an anti-takeover law. Botad did acquire the fourth-lar-gest brewery despite Cleary’s efforts. Cleary did however negotiate a deal, which guarantees that the Heileman Corporate Headquarters will remain in LaCrosse. The control of Heilemans, as well as the Bond Corporations North American brewing operations is firmly in the hands of Cleary. West Salem Chief of Police, Chuck Ziel, resigned August 18, 1987. The farms of Eugene Eckelberg, and Steve and Mary Servais were engulfed in flames. On April 12, Eckelberg’s lost 50 cows, a dairy barn and a tobacco shed. Servais’, on June 14, lost a dairy barn. Jeanne Breidel received the title Miss West Salem June Dairy Days on April 4. First runner-up was Mary Stoker and Stephanie Wines was named second runner-up. The high school hockey team no longer exists because of lack of participation. Most players joined the LaCrosse Flames. West Salem Neshonoc, 1987-1988 87 The World Of Sports While the world was waiting for the winter and summer Olympics to begin, many other significant moments in sports took place. The Minnesota Twins were the first team pictured on a box of Wheaties after capturing the 1987 World Series in game 7. Paul Molitor, of the Milwaukee Brewers, got on base safely in 39 straight games to attain the fifth best consecutive hitting string in Major League Baseball. On March 30, in the final minute of Play in the NCAA Championship basketball game, Indiana’s Keith Smart took the most important jumpshot of his life. The perfect shot grabbed nothing, but net, putting the Hoosiers ahead of Syracuse, 74-73, twenty-eight seconds later; the Indiana team helped prove that Coach Bobby Knight was back from the brink he had experienced the year before. Eighteen year old West German, Steffi Graff earned the World’s No. 1 seed by defeating Chris Evert Lloyd to win the Virginia Slims Tournament and become the first German to hold the top ranking. In the 51st Masters, Larry Mize sank a 60 foot chip in the second hole of a playoff to settle his tie with Greg Norman. The chip was worth $82,800. The basketball world was devastated by the unexpected loss of “Pistol Pete Maravich, who collapsed from a heart attack during a pick-up game of hoops with some friends. Professional football said good-bye to all time leading rusher, Walter Payton, who accumulated 16,726 yards and missed only one game in his 13 year career! On the local side of sports there were also great achievements. Freshman Dannie Premo became the Coulee Conference Cross Country Champion at Arcadia and went on to experience sectional competition. The girls’ volleyball team gave the Holmen Vikings their only loss in the conference and won the Sparta Tournament for the second year in a row. Midway through the season, the Panther girls’ basketball team had beaten every team in the conference and held a strong 10-0 record. Favorites Movies ... People . .. Paula Niemeier and Sara Niedfeldt for help and advice. All coaches for their never ending cooperation. Anyone whom the staff has inadvertently omitted. Hand in hand Together as friends, We began our lives together. With our fears and uncertainties, Our timid smiles and tears, We reached out to one another. And now we have learned to laugh. We have learned to share. We have learned to dream. Through each other’s eyes, We saw hope. And now, together, We will carry on. We will make those dreams come true, And someday we’ll remember, With each other in our hearts, How it all began - With a smile and the giving of a hand. Kelly Kruger jCSTENS 120
