In overall talent it was exactly that. Goals accomplished during the year were winning the Coulee Conference title, gaining the regional title for the twelfth consecutive time and improving at both the sectional and state levels. Two state champions, Jean Fleischman and Jeanne Breidel, highlighted the season - Jean in the shotput, and Jeanne in the high hurdles. We simply had too much firepower, both from our seniors and classes below, for most of our competition. We were fortunate to have tremendous talent, excellent leadership, and several individuals who were willing to 'pay the price' to achieve great things. Teams like this are rare, but hopefully their spirit for excellence will live on, said LeRoy Krall, girls' track coach. Talent in all areas pulled the Panthers through another competitive year. The following years look bright with the upcoming athletes. 1. Jeanne Breidel leaves the pack behind and charges toward the finish line. 2. Intensity grows as Stacey Stello prepares to throw the shot. 3. Julie Paulson springs over the high jump bar. 4. Edging out a La Crescent rival. Heather Weissenberger clears the last hurdle. 5. In conference play the Panthers finished a disappointing fifth of eight teams. Exceptions were Tom Ceresa and Scott Paisley who supplied most of the strength with consis-tant scores each match. Most valuable player, Ceresa, received first team honors while Paisley captured honorable mention. The Salem Golfers look forward to improvement on the 1987 season as senior lettermen Aaron MacDonald, Matt Strittmater, and Jimmy Allen return. Coach Sorenson commented, “Even though I will not be back the spring of '87,1 will never forget my coaching experience due largely to the attitude and camaraderie of the team. 1. Jimmy Allen prepares for a powerful drive. 2. Matl Strittmater eagles hole number five. 3. Coming up short too many times, the Panthers recorded a 2-9 mark in Coulee Conference action. His involvement and dedication to the WSHS baseball program will be greatly missed. Working to challenge the young players to improve throughout their high school careers, Niedfeldt strived to have successful teams. In earlier years the entire program was under the direction of Niedfeldt. This allowed him to use the junior varsity as a stepping stone for the establishment of a competitive varsity team. Highlights of Niedfeldt's career include taking the 1971 team to state competition, and succeeding in either conference championships or reaching the sectional level of tournaments during nine of his first twelve years of coaching. Niedfeldt stated, 1 have good memories of outstanding individuals who played for me during my baseball coaching career. Although Niedfeldt will no longer be coaching baseball, memories will always be cherished by athletes who had the opportunity to work under him. bility for the six returning letter-men: Jimmy Allen, Todd Haverly, Jon Hoff, Damian Miller, Jarod Skrede, and Steve Knudson. Miller, named most valuable player, and Darin Jenks, both received first team all-conference selections for catching and outfield-ing, respectively. Infielders Weber and Jim Szymanski gained Honor- able Mention. With three pitchers returning this year we are looking forward to a good season, remarked head coach Ihle. Lewis has coached football, girls7 gymnastics, and track and field teams during the twelve years he has been at West Salem. 'There have been many memorable experiences and athletes during my years at West Salem. I am pleased that we have been able to increase the number of participants in track and football since my arrival in 1975. Lewis has been the coach of a number of All-Conference football players and state track participants. His efforts will be sincerely missed. With a plaque bearing the message, We were honored to have you as our coach and you will always stand out in our memories, the senior members of the 1986 football team displayed their admiration for all the dedicated years of coaching and companionship Mr. Lewis has so will-ingly given to the football program. 61 Harriers Gain Experience The Boys' 1986 Cross Country team did not place in the upperlevel of their meets, but they had to remember the overall youth and inexperience of the runners. The Panthers were led by returning letterwinners Rhett Hanson, Michael Hoffman, and Todd Groth. Rhett highlighted the year by running with the best in the coulee region until late-season when his performance was dampened by illness. Todd Groth, Andy Lipski, Joe Southall, Kevin Thompson, and Chris Schams also improved steadily while gaining invaluable knowledge of the sport. Four letters, three sets of numer- als, and three certificates of participation were earned this year. Coach LeRoy Krall commented, As more and more runners gain experience, base, and cross country competitiveness, we should make our move to respectability. 1. With great intensity, senior Rhett Hanson strives to the finish. 2. Todd Groth displays concentration on his way to completing another race. 3. Individual awards were given to Melissa Ertz, most valuable runner and Stacy Klos, most improved. Six runners earned letters, one received numerals, and one certificate of participation was given. The team's best finish in an important meet occurred at Brook-wood where they were fifth of nine teams. The young Panther team, learning and rebuilding, stressed intensity and consistency. As a result the team shared a second place honor in the Coulee Conference with On-alaska. Winning the Sparta tournament highlighted the season. Kristen Schmid and Katie Tremain were named to the Sparta all-tournament team. Second place at Regional play was also captured by the Panthers after the team fell to defending Regional Champion Vir-oqua. Individual all-conference honors at the end of the season included: Katie Tremain, first team and Angie Leahy and Heather Weissenberger, honorable mention. Her coacning career has spanned ten years. Beginning her sophomore year of college as an assistant coach at Westby, Kaczmarski later advanced to a head coaching position at Sparta before coming to West Salem in 1983. Citing family committment as the major reason for her resignation, Kaczmarski said she had fond memories of the girls at West Salem. Her most memorable moments as gymnastics coach included winning the sectional meet and placing a respectable third at State during the 1985-86 season. During the past three years, she has qualified two Panther teams for the state meet (1983 and 1985) and also every year gymnasts have qualified individually to compete at State level. In conclusion, Cheryl Kaczmarski commented, Making the decision to resign was a difficult one. 1. Displaying great form, Anjie Krome stretches into the splits. 2. With grace and poise, Annette Graw perfects her pose. 3. Heather Weissenberger exhibits steady balance as she performs a split handstand. 4. Demonstrating her skill on the bars, Jeanne Breidel prepares to do a sole support. 5. Kim Bloss employs tremendous balance as she perfects a needle on the balance beam. Gymnasts Tumble To Victory With only five members returning from last year's squad-Jeanne Breidel, Anjie Krome, Heather Weissenberger, Kim Bloss, and Annette Graw-the West Salem varsity gymnastics team had to work very hard to be a top defender in the coulee conference and sectional meets. Having a mid-season record of 2-1, this year's varsity gymnastics team reflects great potential. The junior varsity team, coached by Jane Althoff, has also shown improvement with every meet. For the 1986-87 gymnastic season I anticipate strong individual performances as well as a team that shows potential depth, stated head coach Ronette Scheidler. Gymnastics team - Front row: Jeanne Breidel, Rachel Thompson, Kim Bloss, Annette Graw, Anjie Krome. Leaders In Tournament Play Leading the Panthers with a 4-8 record are seniors Jim Allen, Pete Hansen, Damian Miller, Erik Peterson and junior Chad Fortney. Coach Chuck Ihle remarked, The highlight of our season, so far, has been our championship at the holiday tournament in De-Soto. Damian Miller was named Most Valuable Player at the tournament. With eight games left in the regular season, West Salem hopes to improve their record. 1. With great intensity, Damian Miller prepares for a crucial freethrow. 2. Senior Erik Peterson fronts his Raider opponent. 3. Pete Hansen drives toward the hoop. 4. Panther players take position for a rebound as junior Chad Fortney takes a shot. 5. Attempting to score two points from the floor, Jim Allen goes up for a shot. 6. Varsity Basketball team-Front row: Erik Peterson, Steve Knudson, John Pedretti, Chad Fortney, Andy Stegner. With hustle, desire, and exceptional defense, the West Salem girls' varsity basketball team held a 7-3 record at mid-season. Implementing an aggresive man-to-man defense, DBD, West Salem has limited opponents' scoring to less than an average of 40 points in nine of ten games. This is the result of such an intense defense. Contributing to the Panther scoring effort, returning starters Katie Tremain and Angie Leahy led the offense while starters Mary Schomberg and Sue Dovenberg added points. Others sharing scoring and starting honors included: seniors, Julie Paulson and Tammy Wills; junior, Julie Smith and sophomore Kristen Schmid. 70 1. Smiling with victory, senior Dan Steele acknowledges his win. 2. Rhett Hanson battles for the stick. 3. Kevin Thompson pins a Luther opponent. 4. In tournament action, the Panther wrestlers earned two thirds, and one fourth place finish. Highlights of the season included the naming of three champions at the Panther Invitational, Rhett Hanson, Jim Klos, and Dan Steele. Steele was also honored with a victory over Steve Hougom, the Associated Press football player of the year. The leadership of four seniors and the rapid development of three freshmen are responsible for vast improvement. Goals for the remainder of the season include seeing wrestlers place well at the conference meet and at the sectional-state levels of competition as well. At mid-season the Pucksters have a 0-6 record, as a result of a senior member playing while ineligible. Coach Herb Long stated, The players I have practice hard. With a touch more work they could be more than just the competitive team; they could be the team that wins. David Arndt served as technical director for this performance. 1. A crown for Marmee's birthday!” 2. How have you been, my darling daughter? 3. Jason Wooden operates the complicated light board. 4. Solie Resigns As Drama Director Joan Solie, who has directed about 75 plays and 8-10 musicals, will be greatly missed as drama director. Her dedication and contributions to the WSHS drama department will never be forgotten. Solie resigned as director the spring of '86 after the performance of Little Women - her final production. Solie first started directing at WSHS in 1955 because she really enjoyed theater and bringing stories to life for audiences. The best thing about being drama director was having the chance to work with students outside of the classroom. It was so rewarding to watch and help develop the tremendous talents we have here at West Salem. The poor facilities were part of her decision to resign. We never could rehearse without a team practicing in the gym. One of the greatest joys of my life was working with theater. The students were great, the productions were exciting, and the hard work was rewarding. I will sincerely miss it! And, Mrs. Solie, we will certainly miss you as drama director! As Editor, Sara Niedfeldt put in many extra hours preparing for the shipment of the 128 page book. Over the summer Marianne Ma-chotka collected more than $3,500 in ads; this money is necessary for the financing of the yearbook. By attending a yearbook camp at UW-Eau Claire, Sara Niedfeldt and Anjie Krome learned many new techniques and discovered a variety of new ideas which helped make this year's book unique. l 1. Americans shared in the delight of the high school social studies teacher as she journeyed from Concord to Houston, and after four months of training, to Cape Canaveral. The excited McAuliffe was part of a seven-member all-American crew that included Judith Resnik, 36; Michael Smith, 40; Francis Scobee, 46; Ronald McNair, 35; Ellison Onizuka, 39; and Gregory Jarvis, 41. Only 73 seconds after lift-off, on January 28, Challenger disappeared in a roaring orange and white clouded explosion. Millions watched with intensity waiting for the shuttle to escape the fireball. Then came the sad realization that something had gone very wrong. For hours following the explosion, debris continued to fall into the Atlantic. About half of the Challenger found in the Atlantic, including the engine, lies in a Florida ware- house. The seven-month quest for the debris involved 6,000 workers, 31 ships and 52 aircrafts combing 93,000 square miles of the Atlantic. Heads turned skyward once again as four T-38 jets soared overhead at the close of a memorial service held three days after the disaster. Friends and family watched as one of the jets peeled off and veered straight up into the sky, to symbolize the lost fliers. For one majestic moment on the Fourth of July, the nation paused for a burst of patriotic pride. The Statue of Liberty celebrated her 100th birthday party with a 28 minute pyrotechnical nightcap. But in a year of conflict, explosions often had a far more deadly significance. Europe and the Middle East were continually lacerated by terrorist attacks. The space shuttle and crew were lost and a Chernobyl nuclear reactor blew up taking the lives of 31 people. A war on drugs was proclaimed. Millions joined hands across America to fight hunger, while hundreds protested nuclear weapons with a coast to coast march. There were bright spots: the uniting of royalty Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, an unforgettable World Series bringing the Mets to the top and a once-in-a-lifetime visit from Halley's comet. 98 In And Around West Salem Two years following the brutal murder, decapitation, and burning of Terry Dolowy's body, the mystery remains unsolved. The rural West Salem woman's body was found, five days after being reported missing, in a roadside ditch in the town of Bergen in Vernon county. For several days in July, Robert Gollnick was the school board in Bangor - the only one-person school board in Wisconsin history. Placing Bangor “on the map Wednesday, July 23, six of seven school board members resigned in protest to an arbitration decision awarding Bangor teachers a 19.5 percent pay raise. After overseeing the removal of almost 60 truckloads of brush, the redecorating of the interior of the home of the founder of the Village of West Salem took place. Stocking it with merchandise, local history buff Errol Kindschy opened Historic Salem for business Monday, July 14. LaCrosse made its mark on world peace with the International Peace Lantern Exchange and a stop by the Soviet Peace Cruise. The peace lantern project, coordinated by a LaCrosse dermatologist, James Baumgaertner, is a peace ceremony marking the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Japan. The LaCrosse County Sheriff's race sparked interest in the elections of 1986. Sylvia Boma lost her attempt to be re-elected. Other candidates were Karl (Butch) Halverson and Gary Thielker. As a write-in candidate, she came up with close to 600 votes fewer than Halverson. After a recount of the ballots, she still was on the short end with a difference of fewer than 300 votes. For financial reasons, a court battle threatened by Boma was dropped. Halverson took office January 5, 1987. Affecting the La Crosse county economy severely was Trane Company's announcement of the layoff of many La Crosse area workers. After failing to get 1,400 union employees to accept 10 percent wage and benefit cuts, the air-conditioning products segment of American Standard announced December 18 it would spend $21 mil- lion to produce new products somewhere other than LaCrosse. Trends Fashion for 1986 took a step backwards opting for the popular looks of the 50's and 60's. Converse hi-tops, rolled up jeans, and jean jackets were just a few of the combinations. Print pants, ponytails, and a new fad - the banana clip -were also in demand. Guess bibs made their debut, while those teenagers who were set on being comfortable found that a pair of jams, a sweatshirt, and canvas tennis shoes did the trick. 99 Sports It was a year of age, ego, and the agony of drugs. Bill Shoemaker, Jack Nicklaus, Raymond Floyd and Bobby Allison pushed back the boundaries of age, while the New York Mets and Chicago Bears expanded the confines of arrogance. They all came out victorious. Two up-and-coming athletes, Len Bias and Don Rogers, died from cocaine, and sports was a loser. At the same time, each of the country's three major professional sports-football, basketball and baseball-were scandalized by drugs. Rogers, a free safety, died on June 27, of a massive cocaine over- dose, the day before he was to have been married. He was 23. Bias, an All-American forward at Maryland, died of a cocaine intoxication on June 19, two days after the Boston Celtics selected him as their top pick in the National Basketball Association draft. He was 22. Shoemaker was 54 when he became the oldest man to win a Kentucky Derby, on May 3. On April 13, Nicklaus won his 18th major golf tournament victory at age 46. While at age 43, Floyd became the oldest golfer to win the U.S. Open, and Allison, at 48, became the oldest man to win a NASCAR top-division race when he captured the Winston 500 on May 4. The National League Champion Mets defeated the Boston Red Sox in a seven game World Series after being one strike away from elimination in the 10th inning of Game 6. The Mets, who battled and bullied their way to 108 regular-season victories, came back after losing the first two games of the series at home. Ray Knight was the Most Valuable Player. The Bears, with their innovative 46 defense, won the Super Bowl on January 26, beating New England, 46-10. The biggest controversy as the 1986-87 season began was the NFL's use of instant replays. The heated disputes of the early season, however, dwindled by seasons's end, although the renewal of the replay will be discussed in March. University of Wisconsin football coach Dave McClain suffered a fatal heart attack on April 28 in Madison. The loss of McClain left the Badger sports fans heartbroken and the football program in disarray. Seven months later, Don Morton of the University of Tulsa was hired. The violent action of Packer's Charles Martin resulted in his two-game suspension during a game in Chicago on November 23. Martin picked up McMahon, the Chicago Bears' quarterback, and threw him to the turf. National Football League Commissioner Pete Rozelle rejected an appeal from Martin and Packer President Robert Parins. Suzie Neas, a 17-year-old Tomah High School senior, placed second in a cross country race in Canton, China. There were 240 runners in the race, sponsored by the International Sports Exchange Program. Folks in Tomah raised $2,000 for the trip. Twenty-five year old cyclist, Greg LeMond, was the first American to ever win the 24-day, 2,542 mile Tour de France. Crossing the line at the 1986 State track and field meet, Jeanne Breidel became West Salem's first state class B 110 meter hurdle champion. 100 Congratulations.
