To let you know just what it meant. Knowing you were near. In future years I'll never make The friends that 1 had here. A special thanks to all of you For being who you are. For sharing all the happy times. I'll take these memories far. Our time is quickly passing, As I have come to regret โ€” We've known each other for many years But it seems we've only met. There's so little time remaining, And so much left to say, I owe so much to all of you Not half could I repay. I wish you well! Good luck in life, May all your dreams come true. Though we may never meet again I will always remember you. Kris Martin 21 The Class Of '85 Tracey Hirschuber Paul Dunlap Todd Servais Leora L. Dream On With Prom '84 The Class of 1985 broke tradition by moving their Junior Prom out of the gymnasium and into the Radisson. Clear balloons accented the Radisson ballroom as couples danced to the theme song Dream On. Coronation climaxed the evening honoring Kris Burrows and Beth Knudson as king and queen of a night never to be forgotten. Scandal provided the music for this special event held April 27, 1984. 1. Dancing to Dream On , court members Todd Schomburg and Audra Ciechanowski ponder the excitement of the evening. 2. Junior class president Lucy Mikshowsky gives last-minute instructions to court members before coronation. 3. Taking a moment to reflect on the night's events, Dan Kor-son and Michelle Stetzer cherish a quiet moment in the lobby. 4. Couples talk and sign each other's prom books in the atmosphere of the Radisson ballroom. 5. Queen Beth Knudson and King Kris Burrows glow with happiness. 43 Innovative Homecoming . . . Student and faculty spirit encouraged school-wide participation in Homecoming Week 1984 and broke the monotony of everyday schedules. Hawaiian Day, October 1, introduced the week's theme with a bright ''aloha''. Students careened through the halls in Hawaiian shirts, leis, and grass skirts. Tuesday's Inside-Out Day showed an unusual side of shirts, jeans, and coats while Wednesday brought a clash of mix and match wear as auctioned-off football players labored for their buyers. On Thursday students doubled as ancient Romans by wearing togas and hair wreaths; it was also Daisy Day. Topping the week off were hats, glasses, and the Orange and Black Day tradition. Action began to climax Thursday night with a bonfire. Tug-of-war competition followed; the Class fo 1985 overwhelmed every other team including the faculty. The senior powderpuff football team then humbled the juniors, 15-0, to dominate the evening. Fans saw a new twist to the halftime show with the Panther Pipers (kazoo-playing Pep Club members) and the all-male senior powderpuff cheerleaders. Spirit ran high Friday, too, as seniors and football players chanted through WSHS corridors. Cheering picked up again during the pep rally when the week's winners were announced and more contests occurred. Juniors earned first place in a stiff air band competition that replaced skits. The freshmen placed second, sophomores ranked third, and seniors ended last, despite having the entire class rock to Twisted Sister's We're Not Gonna Take It . A cannibal-like group of faculty also joined in the fun. The Class of 1986 grabbed top honors in float building as well as the ice cream drop competition. Taking first in window design and all dress-up contests was the Class of '85. The freshmen notched a first rating with their posters. The pep rally was followed by a parade and football loss to La Crescent, 32-12. The week culminated Saturday night with a dance and the coronation of King Kris Burrows and Queen Lisa Carlson. 44 1. Voted Mr. Ugly by his teammates, Greg Hoier relishes the honor. 2. Senior representatives Lois Kammel and Bill Silha traverse the parade route riding backwards. 3. Savoring their first Homecoming afternoon are Katie Tremain and Mike Gunther, freshman representatives. 4. Shellee Fladham-mer and Darin Jenks, Daisy Jane and Daisy Joe, pose before reaching the main route. 5. Jon Lewis and Karen Grover, sophomore representatives, acknowledge a parade viewer. 6. Robert Smith qualified in the 100m dash and also gained honorable mention in the Coulee Conference while Most Valuable Player Lester Hall earned a spot in the 800m state contest and was named to the All-Conference squad. Securing a place on the second team was Adam War-riner in the shot-put. The Panthers attained sixth place of eight teams in the conference meet while earning second at regionals. With several returning lettermen and a large turnout of underclassmen, the 1985 season should be a strong one. 1. Springing over an obstacle, Dan Kor-son bounds toward the finish. 2. Showing his mettle. Bob Machotka grinds out the last leg of his contest. 3. Utilizing excellent form, Greg Hoier unleashes another herculean effort. 4. Charging the tape, state qualifier Rob Smith breezes to another 4x100 meter relay victory. 5. Garnering the victory, Darin Jenks crosses the line. 6. Vaulter Henry Althoff mentally prepares himself for his next attempt. 7. John Hegenbart, a stalwart of the Panther attack, strives for the win. 1984 Varsity Track team โ€” Front row: Coach Jon Lewis, Rhett Hanson, Joe Sagler, Mike Modawell, Tim Osiecki, Assistant Coach Luther Selbo. Girls Capture Regional Earning its tenth consecutive regional championship and boasting an individual state champion hurdler, the 1984 Girls' Track squad was a triumphant one. West Salem edged Prairie du Chien to take the regional crown and placed fourth in the Mt. Horeb sectional. Most Valuable Trackster Angie Jenkins qualified for the state meet in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles; she finished first and third, respectively, at the state meet. As a team, the Panthers were eleventh out of 118 Class B schools in Wisconsin. Under the leadership provided by Coach LeRoy Krall and the 1984 seniors, the team hauled in four regular season victories and four second place finishes. Attaining All-Conference recognition were Christa Romskog in the shot put and 110 hurdles, Lisa Carlson in the long jump, Lori Hundt in the 880 run, and Angie DuCharme in the high jump, along with team captains Jenkins, Penny Wehrs and Becky Pedretti. The mile relay team of Jenkins, DuCharme, Hundt and Mary Schomberg, and the 440 relay team of Carlson, Jennifer Breidel, Beth Knudson and Becky Iverson also earned All-Coulee Conference honors. Special awards given were Most Valuable Freshman to Schomberg and Most Improved to Romskog and Jennifer Breidel. Twenty-three team members earned varsity letters. The 1985 squad should prove successful, too, with the leadership of seniors Romskog, Carlson, Knudson, and Tari Hanson, and considerable talent returning from the 1984 team. 1. While employing excellent form. Missy Ertz flows over the remainder of her endurance test. 2. Muscles taut, Angie DuCharme taxes her body to pull out the victory for West Salem. 3. With cat-like deftness, Lisa Carlson bounds over the bar to secure top honors. 4. Tari Hanson, the epitomy of perserverance, stretches out her lead. 5. Displaying the mainstay of the Panther squad, Mary Schomberg and Jenny Breidel combine to quash the opposition. 6. Christa Romskog thrusts a shot well past the qualifying mark to advance toward the finals. 7. Once again dominating her opponents, Lori Hundt turns another race into a runaway. 53 Golfers Putt Third Coached by Jim Friesen, the 1984 Golf team improved from fifth place in the final three matches of the season to earn a third place rank in the Coulee Conference for the second consecutive year. Returning lettermen Scott Jackson, Steve Bartz, Tom Ceresa and Scott Paisley provided the nucleus for the squad. Brad Fry rounded out the varsity team that completed the season. Pacing the squad were Jackson and Bartz who finished eleventh and fifteenth, respectively, in the conference medalist race. Jackson was the only Panther who advanced to sectionals. Losing only Bartz to graduation, the 1985 team should be a competitive force in the Coulee. meets place of teams Logan Quadrangular ..............4th 4 La Crescent ......................3rd 7 Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau .........Sth 7 Holmen ..........................6th 7 Sparta Triangular ............... 2nd 3 Onalaska Luther ................ lst 2 Arcadia .........................5th 7 Whitehall ....................... 2nd 3 West Salem Triangular ............3rd 3 West Salem Conference Meet ......3rd 7 Black River Falls ...............3rd 7 La Crosse Logan .................lst 2 Onalaska Luther .................lst 2 Onalaska ........................4th 7 W.I.A.A. Improvement was shown over last year and Coach Alan Niedfeldt feels this improvement will begin to show in 1985. Losing six valuable starters will pose a responsibility for the nine returning letter-men to lead the Panthers to victory in a tough Coulee Conference. Ty- rone Huebsch represented West Salem on the All-Conference first team as a designated hitter, compiling a .397 batting average with 23 hits. Co-captains and co-valuable players Scott Szymanski and Lester Hall obtained second team honors. Receiving honorable mention were Dan Groth, Greg Hoier, Jim Szymanski, and Jeff Palm. Jim Szy- manski led the J.V. team with a .417 batting average and a .521 slugging average. Many J.V. players acquired varsity playing time and will be valuable assets to the varsity team this coming year. Because the team consisted of predominately sophomore players, the J.V. team's success will depend on the talents of this year's freshmen. 4 PonIVfi VanU'C 1984 Varsity Baseball team โ€” Front row: Coach Alan Niedfeldt, Jeff Palm, Scott Szymanski. The Panther football team struggled in a competitive Coulee Conference throughout the 1984 season and posted a 0-9 mark. Heading All-Conference award winners was Co-captain and Most Valuable Player Greg Hoier. He secured spots on both the second team offense and defense and also earned honorable mention on the Coulee Region team. Kris Burrows and John Twining received second team defensive honors while Tyrone Huebsch, Darin Jenks, and Spencer Mashak all attained honorable mention. Senior Paul Schmidt led fellow Panthers as the other Co-captain and obtained honorable mention. 1. The Panther bench fixes its attention on the field. 2. Veteran Andy Lyga and newcomer Dan Athnos consistently paced the squad in individual finishes. Lyga just missed All-Conference recognition by placing fifteenth in the Coulee Meet where a fourteenth rank is required. Under the leadership of coaches Jack Hervert and Rod Radle, the team placed third in regionals to gain a berth in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association's Class B sectional. No members advanced to state competition, however. 1. Freshman Mike Hoffman places well in his first varsity start. 2. Showing why he earned a varsity spot is Steve Bahr. 3. First year runner Scott Jack-son strives to better his time at Myrick Park. 4. Gutsy determination signifies senior Dan Athnos' race to the tape in dismal, wet weather. 5. Coach LeRoy Krall's girls' cross-country runners began the 1984 season with smashing success. Tina Paulson and foreign exchange student Paivi Alakuijala finished in the top ten at most meets and were sometimes joined by returning letterwinners Tari Hanson and Missy Ertz. Injury and illness plagued the contingent at the season's close, thus squelching its goal of a sectional berth. Paulson was the only Panther to advance from the regional. She attained fourth place in the Coulee Conference Meet while Hanson secured a tenth place rank. 1. Paivi Alakuijala checks her time as she charts another tremendous contest. 2. Despite being hampered by illness, Jackie Schmid displays her improvement in winning style. 3. Feisty senior Tari Hanson turns a corner while she staves off 6 ย attacks from behind. 4. The team ousted conference co-leader Ona-laska in the Class B regional championship, a foe it also thwarted in regular season play. Although the contingent placed last at sectionals, it was the only one to over-power eventual state champion Wisconsin Dells. Gaining All-Conference honors for the Panthers were Captain Christa Romskog and Lisa Carlson on first team and Kari Torgeson and Tracey Hirschuber on the honorable mention squad. Carlson and Romskog were voted Most Valuable Players by their teammates while Audra Ciechanowski earned the Most Enthusiastic award. Receiving Most Improved honors was Wendy Wheadon; Hirschuber was named Top Setter. 63 Gymnasts Excel With Following consecutive state tournament berths, the gymnastics squad continued its tradition of excellence in the 1984-85 season. Outstanding talent and leadership were furnished by seniors Meg Sweeney and 1984 State Finalist Lisa Carlson. The unit was characterized by its great depth. A 106.71 decision against rival Westby set a new school record in total points scored in a meet. On January 21, the girls outmaneuvered De Soto, 104.46-102.44; De Soto was the only Class B team to defeat West Salem in a dual meet action last season and also placed fourth in the 1984 state meet above the fifth-ranked Panthers. The junior varsity gymnasts competed solely in optional-level routines for the first year and should provide a strong nucleus for Coach Cheryl Kaczmarski and upperclassmen Jean Stuber, Jane Althoff, Jackie Schmid, Becky Iverson, and Tina Paulson to develop in years to come. With grace and poise, 1984 state qualifier Jean Stuber perfects her pose. 6. Tina Paulson adds flourish to a pause in her routine. 7. Becky Iverson shows flexibility with her back aerial. 65 Seniors Dominate Coach Chuck Ihle and Assistant Robert Fortney guided their varsity boys' basketball team to a 6-6 overall mark and 3-4 Coulee Conference standing at the season's midpoint. Patient offense and an unyielding defense sparked the cagers to several narrow victories including a 49-47 overtime win at La Crescent. The unit's caliber and depth demanded respect from basketball powerhouses Royall, Onalaska, and Westby; players' refusal to quit earmarked the season. The Panthers claimed second place in the annual West Salem Holiday Tournament: they frustrated Bangor, 57-39, in the semifinal and lost the championship game to De Soto, 49-41. 1. Paul Schmidt unleashes a crucial free throw in the Panthers' 52-50 win in the Coulee Conference opener at Black River Falls. 2. The West Salem five frustrate Holmens man-to-man pressure defense. 3. Free throws proved to be a decisive factor in the contest in which West Salem squeaked by Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau, 55-53. 5. Girls Fight To Keep Pace In a rebuilding year, the varsity girls' basketball team fought its way to a 5-7 overall mark at the 1984-85 season midpoint. A balanced scoring attack and a stifling full court press helped Coach Carol Hanson's Panther cagers win many of their close games. One of the season's high points included a loss to Onalaska in which West Salem battled from a 16 point deficit to scare the Coulee Conference leading Hilltoppers. The Panthers also competed in the Richland Center Holiday Tournament where they captured third place after losing to River Valley and then defeating Sauk Prairie, 55-47, the next night. Senior standouts Tracey Hirschuber and Christa Romskog, along with other starters Angie DuCharme, Becky Hole, and Lori Hundt, guided the 15-member squad to improvement throughout the season. 1. Grapplers Strive Lacking a full squad once again, the West Salem wrestlers experienced limited success in dual meet action. A 43-21 victory over Viroqua in the squad's opener started the season out well, but forfeited weights and injuries prevented a trend. Heavyweight Dan Steele's 5-2 decision over Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau's Jim Oedsma lifted the Panthers to a 33-30 win, however, and second place finishes in the Royall and Onalaska Invitationals were other highlights of the season. 1. In And Around Salem La Crosse, Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, and Milwaukee had at least one thing in common in May, 1984: bomb scares. Six pipe bombs were discovered in the city of La Crosse; Fort McCoy's Army bomb squad detonated those that had not yet gone off. Earl Steven Karr was charged with the bombings. Price wars between La Crosse and area grocers erupted when Cub Foods opened its doors in June, 1984. Located across from Valley View Mall, the huge warehouse-type environment lured consumers to buy in large quantities and bag their own groceries. Congress passed a bill in June forcing states to raise their legal drinking ages to 21 or lose portions of their federal highway funds. West Salem High School students discussed the bill's effects with District Attorney Roger LeGrand, Assemblyman Syl Clements, and Congressman Steve Gunderson when they visited the school. Barneveld, a southern Wisconsin community, was annihilated in a June, 1984, tornado in which nine were killed and 200 were injured. Efforts to clean up were helped by the Red Cross and many other volunteers. A West Salem School Board attempt to dismiss its custodians created controversy from November, 1984 into January, 1985. Students became involved by attending school board meetings, signing a petition, and showing support of the janitors' work. Money . . . Where Does It Go? Increased graduation requirements and a return to the basics in education were topics of concern in 1984 and 1985. 119 Sports Olympians Contribute To Regained Faith In America Gymnastics team member Jean Stuber signifies West Salem's excellence in the sport. The squad set a new school record for points scored in a single gymnastics meet and later broke it. Fame is a vapor, popularity an accident, and money takes wings. For the only thing that endures is character. O.J. Simpson in SPORTS ILLUSTRATED Nov. 26, 1979. American patriotism soared as high as the nation's flags when chants of U.S.A., U.S.A. roared at the summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California. The United States teams combined to haul in a record 83 gold medals and 174 total medals but were also without competition from boycotting teams like the Soviet Union and East Germany. The spunky Mary Lou Retton captured many hearts when she stormed to a gold medal in all-around gymnastics competition with two perfect TO' ratings. The second was noncompulsory! United States men's gymnastics Football Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie, a 5-foot-9 senior star, fired blistering passes en route to the Heisman Trophy and a Cotton Bowl victory over Houston. The Wisconsin Badgers started slow but battled to a 7-3-1 regular season record and Hall of Fame Bowl appearance on December 29, 1984. The No. 20 Badgers let a 13-0 lead dissolve and lost to the Kentucky Wildcats, 20-19. teammates Mitch Gaylord, Bart Conner, Peter Vidmar, and three others scored five 10s to trim the Chinese squad. In other significant Olympic victories, the U.S. won its first medals in volleyball, and diver Greg Lou-ganis took both the springboard and platform golds. Jeff Blatnick's Greco-Roman wrestling medal touched the nation not only because of its gold tint but also since Blatnick beat Hodgkins disease to get it. Joan Benoit secured the first U.S. gold in the women's marathon while Carl Lewis equalled Jesse Owens' 1936 feat in winning four track-and-field gold medals. Update In pro action, Green Bay survived a disastrous 1-7 start to finish 8-8 under first year Packer Coach Forrest Gregg. Highly touted Miami quarterback Dan Marino and his Dolphin teammates were routed by Joe Montana and the San Francisco 49ers, 38-16, in Superbowl XIX. The 49ers set a new NFL record with their 18-1 season record. 1984 โ€” Almost The Year Of The Cubs 120 The Bad News Bears of professional baseball โ€” the Chicago Cubs โ€” suddenly landed in the win column more often than not and gained their first chance at the National League pennant since 1945. The Cubs jumped to a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series, but they soon became the first National League team to blow the advantage when they lost the next three to San Diego. In the American League, the Detroit Tigers swept Kansas City in the pennant race and then overpowered San Diego in the World Series. The Milwaukee Brewers, meanwhile, ended their dismal 67-94 season as quickly as possible. Mrs. Delores Hole โ€” Instructional Aide Linda Athnos, Judy Hoier, and David Palm for contributing your outstanding basketball pictures, and Jerry Szymanski for your tennis photos. Anyone whom the staff has inadvertently omitted. 127 The Last Out It's the final inning Of just another game. The last out is inevitable Because time is its name. For the Seniors, the game is over And new plays must be learned. The team of friends must scatter Yet, to the future they have turned. But for the Underclassmen, They'll have another chance To hit the winning home run And to success advance. Marion Hoffman Jennifer Niedfeldt โ€ข ; v- 128
