1984 Neshonoc West Salem High School West Salem, Wisconsin 54669 A very bright star in a sea of dark. A very high note, the song of a lark. Gentle waves, lapping on the shore. A gull, that has been here once before. A colorful sunset, set back in the hills. A void in my heart suddenly fills. Magic isn’t tricky. It's everywhere! Even invisible, it still is there. All you have to do is find something to love, And magic will surround you, a gift from above. —Kris Martin Theme 3 Student Council—Front row: Sara Norton. Up to Par in ’83 The 1983 Golf squad, under the direction of Coach Jim Friesen, improved tremendously. With just two returning lettermen, the team jumped from sixth to third place in the Coulee Conference race. The team’s record, 33-27, is a mark they hope to topple next season. Veterans Mike Greene and Steve Bartz led a well-balanced attack. Greene qualified for sectionals by outperforming the field at regionals. Bartz, the mark of consistency usually finished in the team’s top two spots. Rounding out the Panther fivesome were Scott Jackson, Tom Ceresa and Scott Paisley. There was stiff competition among the three for the team’s final three positions. 1. Demonstrating good form, Mike Greene tees off. 2. Tom Ceresa shows touch on the carpet. Leadership, Depth -Formula for Success With its team-oriented attitude and great depth, the 1983 Girls’ Track team soared to familiar heights. This formula, plus a combination of good leaders and willing followers, has proved to be Coach LeRoy Krall’s key to success. Next season’s squad appears to have a tight grip on the reins of the tough Coulee Conference. With the return of state placers Angela Jenkins and Lori Hundt and a crew of talented underclassmen, the Panthers are a team to watch. 46 Sports 1983 Team — First row: Tari Hanson. Dee Dee Knutson. Although the 1983 Boys’ Track squad got off to a slow start, they showed signs of steady improvement. Led by M.V.P. and state placer Lester Hall, many individual goals were met. Hall, who had never run an 880 competitively, placed fourth at the state meet in that event. Coach Lewis is looking forward to a good 1984 season and hopes to get a couple of state champions out of his team. 1983 Boys' Varsity Hack team — Front row: Rob Smith, Andy Lyga, John Twining. The team of 17 boys battled hard and did not quit easily throughout the season, but it seemed luck wasn’t on their side as they lost four non-conference games by a mere one run. Scott Szymanski, pitcher, and first baseman Lester Hall represented West Salem on the All-Conference First Team. Outfielder Jerry Unser made second team while Dave Weber, second baseman; Dan Groth, shortstop; and third baseman Greg Hoier obtained honorable mention. Losing only two lettermen and with the addition of talented players moving up from the JV team, West Salem’s future looks hopeful. The JV team compiled a winning 10-6 record that was highlighted by taking first at the second annual JV Tournament. In the opening game, the team staged a come-from-behind 13-12 victory over Hol-men and then easily passed Whitehall 25-3. Blanking Onalaska 5-0 in the Championship game, the JV team topped the eight-team tourney in a spectacular fashion. “If this team can manage to carry the efforts I saw in this tournament, they will continue to be winners in coming years,” noted Coach Jack Hervert. 50 Sports 1. Sports 53 1983 - A Respectable Season The Varsity football team fought its way to a 4-5 record. A veer offense was utilized by an all-senior backfield to dissect the opponent, while consistency and toughness bolstered the defense. “Although the record, as well as the team beaten, was the same (as last year), this was a very enjoyable team to watch,” Head Coach Jon Lewis reflected. Greg Hoier, Panther center, earned a position on the All-Coulee Conference first team. Seniors Lester Hall, Scott Szymanski and Brian Leum obtained second team honors, and Brian Holt, Paul Schmidt and Kris Burrows received honorable mention. Winning Regionals, the team advanced to Sectionals where they were halted by state qualifying Monona Grove. These two plus Becky Pedretti, Sue Turner, and junior Christa Romskog rounded off the starting five. Highlighting the season was the G.E.T. game. Continuously having to forfeit from two to four weight classes due to injury or lack of size, Panther grapplers keyed on individual rather than team success. As the team entered the Coulee Conference Tournament, six of the eight wrestlers had .500 or better records. Highlighting the season was a fifth place finish at the Royall Invitational. Returning all wrestlers except for four seniors, next season looks promising for many underclassmen who gained valuable experience. Sports 63 Gymnasts Seek New Horizons 1.
