Although the season was not impressive in win-loss terms, the squad showed improvement in each game, and with ten returning lettermen, next year’s season should prove to be a good one. Scott Szymanski made first team All-Conference at first base, while Brian Holt and Kurt Weber gained spots on the second team at designated hitter and outfield, respectively. First, a twenty-six game losing streak was broken and then the team won their first conference game in three years. The switch to a wishbone offense and a 5-2 monster defense 4 proved to be beneficial as the squad finished with a respectable 4-5 record. Jeff Hilby earned All-Conference honors on first team at linebacker while Brian Leum made second team as a defensive back. Lester Hall, Scott Waite, Jerry Unser, Kenny Schmidt, Kevin Carlson, John Nilsson, and Todd Krome — all earned Honorable Mention. Varsity Football Team — Front row: Coach Jon Lewis, Billy Silha. Senior Angela Pedretti and junior Penny Wehrs earned first team All-Conference honors while Brenda Kortbein and Sue Turner received honorable mention. The Junior Varsity captured first place at the 14-team JV invitational at Central High School and first place in the Coulee Conference. The Freshman Team, also, topped their conference to round out an outstanding season. 4 Varsity Team — Front row: Coach Carol Hanson. Angela Pedretti. Polly Bjornson, Lisa Carlson. Exciting basketball was played throughout the season with many close games. Improvement was made on the offensive average over previous years; full court pressure added to the excitement. Tri-captains Sarah Balmer, Angela Predetti, and Kathy Schomburg provided the team with leadership throughout the season. Leading the conference in scor- ing was Penny Wehrs, while Kathy Schomburg was among the top ten scorers. Highpoints of the season included dominating Bangor by 20 points and going on to win. With a record of 8-1, the varsity went into the second half of the season tied for the top of the Coulee Conference. The junior varsity led conference play at midseason undefeated. Freshman Girls — Front row: Coach Angelia Doyle. Michelle Hartman, Roberta Krause, Kim Hansen. Angie DuCharme, Kris Meyer. Lori Hundt. Back row: Jennifer Briedel, Paulette Anderson. Sports 53 Desire and Hustle Prevail After a disastrous start, the team proved themselves during the Holiday Tournament by giving state-ranked North Crawford a tough game. Confidence became the key to success, but it wasn’t until seven games into the season that the Panther squad started to mesh as a unit. The season’s record was not indicative of the desire or hustle shown by the Panthers. In each game everyone gave his 100% to the team. First year Coach Chuck Ihle is anticipating an improved ball club next year. With three finely seasoned players returning, the Panthers will be competitive in ’83-’84 in the tough Coulee Conference. 1. Eyeing the hoop. Paul Nuttelman drives in for an easy two points. 2. Without hesitation. Kevin Carlson puts up a jump shot. 3. Avoiding the defenders’ reach. Dave Kramer lets loose his accurate jump shot. 4. Back row: Sandy Barkuloo. Jean Stuber, Paula McClintock. The 1982-1983 sports season proved to be a successful one for the varsity gymnasts as it has in past years. Having lost one of their top competitors did not seem to hinder their performance as they kept the tradition of a winning record. Lori Krome, former WSHS student and gymnast, along with Head Coach Jackie Ostrem combined efforts to make the season a reflection of past excellence and to prepare underclassmen for future perfection. 4 Sports 57 1. Like a cat. Mike Lyga tantalizes his opponent. 2. With the technique perfected. Rich Stremcha battles for the pin. 3. Rick Pedretti looks for the fall. 4. Waiting for the pin. Rich Stremcha. Back row: Coach Leroy Krall. Kris Burrows. Rick Pedretti. Todd Meyer. John Harold. 58 Sports Veteran Grapplers Prove to be a Strong Force Although the wrestling squad’s dual meet successes were few, seven returning lettermen highlighted the year in tournament action for Coach LeRoy Krall. Combined with the talents of sophomore Kris Burrows and freshman Andy Lyga, this crew consistently placed six or more of the nine wrestlers on the team in the top three positions in area Invitationals. Panther fans often found their team winning, but forfeiting the upper three classes proved the deterrent in dual meet action. With six returning letter-man, next seasons wrestling squad, with the addition of some wrestlers in the upper weight classes, could be the team to watch. 5 Junior Varsity Team — Front row: Gordie Gerke. Henry Althoff. Jeff Elliott. Arlyn Gensch. Wade Schomberg, Steve Gerke. Back row: Tim Osiecki, Bob Machotka, Paul Dunlap. John Twining. Chad Goldsmith Coach Mike Sabotta. Sports 59 Sports Whirl HOME OF THE On the day of graduation weary eyes aglow with pride. Every sign of disappointment bravely seem to put aside.
