It seems particularly appropriate at this one hundredth annual commencement of West Salem High School to honor you as the epitome of those of your generation who were devoted to education. Your career as classroom teacher, as County Superintendent of Schools for twenty-five years, and as a member of the West Salem Board of Education for nine years are ample testimony to your dedication and impact on education at the community, county, and state levels. We are indebted to you for devoting your entire life to education, for your never ending energy and years of county and community service. Before the '79 girls' track season even began, the major goal was a trip to State. The Panthers breezed through Regionals and Sectionals. At State great teamwork and extreme individual effort helped them edge Howards Grove 38-32. State place winners were as follows: First place — 440 relay fleam — Tina Althoff, Angie Althoff, Cindy Jenkins, and Sara Higdon; second place-high jump — Paula Blunck; third place-high jump — Jean Saxton; and third place — 110 hurdles — Cindy Jenkins. The Panthers finished with a 7-2 record, including victories in the Logan Invitational, GET Class C Invitational, and La Crescent Invitational Relays. The girls managed a third place finish in the Coulee Conference Tournament behind runner-up Onalaska, and Champs Arcadia. The Panthers proved to be a strong team by placing fourth in the Coulee Conference, one of the strongest in the area. Coach Harry Warriner's squad should be stronger next year, as it is led by MVP Greg Geisler who placed eleventh in the conference individual standings. With five returning lettermen, two of whom are seniors, the future looks bright for the WSHS golf team. 1. Jeff Jenkins blasts the ball from the sand trap. 2. Depth was a key factor in the Panthers' success as each player finished the season with an above average, five hundred, record. Post season action saw all the players advance to the finals in their own brackets. With eighteen senior players, the Panthers were expected to be one of the contending teams in the Coulee Conference race, but injuries to many starting players plagued Coach Jon Lewis' team, both mentally and physically, throughout the season. Shares Conference The 1979 Panther baseball team surprised the Coulee Conference by capturing a share of the conference title. West Salem posted a 13-6 overall record, 9-3 in the conference.
