The girls who attended the state convention at Green Lake were Sue Wege, Mary Lou Hulberg, Leora Sprain, JoanQuackenbush, and Adreana Strittmater. After initiating twenty-two freshmen, the UNICEF drive and the annual Harvest Dance kept everyone busy. On November 20, West Salem was host to one hundred twenty girls for a district rally. The F.F.A. - F.H.A. Christmas party, the annual Mother-Daughter banquet, observation of National F.H.A. Week, and the Style Show were activity highlights. Throughout the year, Joan Quackenbush, state recreation leader, attended officers’ meetings. The officers of the club include: Adreana Strittmater. The F.F.A., or the Future Farmers of America, is the national organization of, by, and for boys preparing for agricultural vocations. Once again N. N. Rowe, the local advisor, has led members to top honors in 1957-58. Three teams--the livestock, dairy, and meat teams--were entered in the state judging contest and came home with superior ratings. A truly remarkable achievement was made by the meat team which won a gold emblem, the second year in a row, at the national contest. Special events sponsored with the F.H.A. were the annual Harvest Dance and Christmas Party. The local chapter has a basketball team, sponsors a rural judging day, and brings the year’s activities to a climax with a northern camping trip. Paramount objectives of the Thespian Drama Club include promotion of interest in drama and its production. Two shows were sponsored in the 1957-58 school year: a one-act contest play, The Boy With A Cart, was entered in the state contest and successfully competed at the district and sectional contests, and in die spring an all-school, three act play, Blithe Spirit was presented. Its main goal, promoting interest in science, is successfully stimulated through interesting programs and lyceums pertaining to science. The club members are engaged in various projects relating to science such as chemistry, electronics, physics, aeronautics, and other subjects of interest. The Spanish Club, one of West Salem High School's newest organizations, chose as its title Los Conquistadores. meaning The Conquerors. The organization strives for three basic goals which are first, becoming more fluent in speaking Spanish; second, interesting others in Spanish; third, learning cultural aspects of Spanish speaking countries. Two of the club's annual activities are holding a tea for the faculty and learning Christmas carols in Spanish for the purpose of caroling. The student council's purpose is to provide for the students a voice in the regulation of school activities, to help develop better citizens, and to maintain the high standards of West Salem High School. The club is most active during the spring of the year when the speaking contests are held in the following divisions: humorous and non-humorous, original and non-original, oratory, extemporaneous reading and speaking four-minute speeches, and interpretive reading. The official voice of the student body, the ORIOLE, was successfully published for the eleventh year. During the 1956-57 school year eight editions were issued under the supervision of Marie B. Sanders, Joan Hansen, and John Monson, club advisors. Under the direction of Alice McGarty the advanced business class capably typed and mimeographed the ORIOLE. Comprising the group of twenty-three staff members were eight seniors, three juniors, three sophomores, and nine freshmen. The ORIOLE Club, besides keeping students, teachers, and parents informed of school events, offers opportunities for students to gain journalistic experience by actual participation in the publication of the paper. Art work and typing are among other contributions of staff members. The Archery Club has completed its second year as an organization in West Salem High School. The club is purely recreational and holds archery shoots of all kinds. Developing the sport of archery by teaching new members the art of shooting is one of the foremost ideals of the club. Using the bow for hunting and on camping trips is also encouraged by the organization. During the winter months the club moves into the gym for their shoots, one of which was visited by the ex-Wisconsin state champion archer, Clyde Burchart. CheuiA Throughout the year the Chorus performed in various musical programs, including the Thanksgiving andChrist-mas concerts, and the Spring and Farewell concerts. For the first time in fifteen years West Salem entered two participants in the Dorian Festival at Luther College. In May, the Mixed Chorus, including twenty-seven girls and nine boys, competed in the district choral music contest at La Crosse. One of the most enjoyable social activities of the group is their annual Christmas caroling and party. All the members thoroughly enjoy these activities.
