Junior Class Advisor. 7 'faculty 7 e Tteurt, i t In September of 1950, forty-four somewhat timid but eager freshmen made their debut at West Salem High School. After dubiously accepting initiation as something which could not be by-passed, we anxiously turned our attention to various extra-curricular activities . F.F. A., F.H. A., Forensics , Pep Club , band, chorus and ORIOLE club claimed many of us. Representing us in both basketball and baseball were Ken Carlson and Karl Haverly. The Homecoming Court included Janice Meyer. Our freshman year soon passed, and we found ourselves as sophomores. Forty-three of us joyfully initiated the freshmen. Many of us found ourselves officers of clubs in which one year before we had been me re participants. Beverly Schild and Fred Schomberg were elected as cheerleaders. Serving on the baseball and basketball teams were Karl Haverly and Ken Carlson. Joan Kiesow represented the class on the Homecoming Court. Time flitted by rapidly and we found ourselves upperclassmen. We capably presented a three-act comedy, Meet Corliss Archer , as our class play; our prom, Somewhere Over The Rainbow , was a tremendous success. King Karl Haverly chose as his queen Janice Meyer. Fred Schomberg was re-elected as cheerleader, and Ken Carlson, Karl Haverly, and Dean Waldenberger played on the baseball team. Karl and Ken, who were elected to the Coulee Region All-Star team, participated in basketball, Greta Sprick became Head Librarian in her junior year and also associate editor of the ORIOLE. Jackie Vance was chosen associate editor of the NESHONOC. Many juniors heldoffices in various clubs. Ken Carlson, Galen Romskog, and Greta Sprick represented West Salem at Badger Boys1 and Girls' State respectively. Marie Stetzer was on the Homecoming Court. In no time at all, three years had passed, and we found ourselves faced with our goal--graduation. Seniors actively participated in every club and acted as officers of many. Heading the F.F.A. was Allen Sprain; F.H.A., Janice Meyer Pep Club, Fred Schomberg; band, Barbara Schomberg; and ORIOLE, Greta Sprick. Greta was also the athletic treasurer , an office she held for four year s. Jackie Vance edited our NESHONOC. Ken Carlson and Nancy Havens were business managers of the ORIOLE and NESHHONOC, respectively. Others holding offices in clubs were Marjorie Johnson, Mona Bruemmer, Beverly Schild, Gu-rine Whitlock, Marilyn Oldenburg, and Carol Rowe. Ken Carlson and Karl Haverly acted as co-captains of the basketball team. In the baseball squad were Dean Waldenberger, Ken and Karl. Beverly Schild was chosen as senior cheerleader. As our high school careers come to an end, we the class of 1 54 express our gratitude and appreciation to the faculty for the help and guidance which they have given us during these four important years of our young lives. Although we are leaving high school, we will never forget the memorable experiences West Salem High School has afforded us. Fifteen years have passed since the graduation of the class of 1954, and we are holding our third reunion at Laurel Lodge in Topeka, Kansas. Topeka was chosen because it was considered a convenient place fcr everyone to meet. First to arrive, of course, is David Miller, now leader of the famous dance band, Miller's Hep Cats . One of our classmates, Beverly Schild, is cornet soloist in his band. Dave is furnishing the music for us tonight. Beverly Hemker will entertain us later in the evening with one of her new ballets in which she recently appeared in Paris , France. The food for our banquet is being provided by Herbert Hetland, who now owns the largest super Supermarket in the Northwest. We' re wondering in what language Pat Durkin will converse with us. She has been a Russian interpreter for our government for several years. Marvin Capper and Galen Rcmskog, who have recently merged their 6000-acre ranch in Texas , flewhere in Galen's private plane. Other travelers from afar are Pastor Kenneth Eggen and his wife , the former Gurine Whitlock, who came all the way from California. Nancy Havens, who has received her Doctor's degree in Archeology from the University of Columbia, will soon be sentto Egypt to recover the missing rib of Adam. Important women in the field of nursing are here tonight. Janice Meyer is the head of the new nursing school at Lutheran Hospital in Minneapolis , while Jean Anderson is headnurse at world famous Mayo Clinic. MonaBruemmer and Dagny Marking are able to attend our reunion as they are in the United States on a vacation from their nursing careers in Johannesburg, Africa. The latter tell us that they look for diamonds when they aren't on duty. Several girls are unable to be with us this evening. Greta Sprick is traveling abroad as an ambassador to Luxemberg, and Marie Stetzer isin Washington, D. C., appearing before the President with an exhibition of her widely acclaimed paintings. Jackie Vance is an Exchange Teacher to England. Veterinarian Robert Raymer has just discovered a new cure for anthrax. Allen Sprain is now manufacturing a chicken feed which guarentees that all chickens eating it will lay at least five eggs every day. Fred Schomberg, prominent farmer from Iowa, will appreciate these new discoveries. Yvonne Bangsberg, Rosemary Jandt, Karen Moan, and Marjorie Johnson are all teaching elementary school in Seattle , Washington, while Lois Schomburg is teaching Home Economics at our alma mater, West Salem. Marilyn Oldenburg, flying here via TWA, is a receptionist at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. Accompanying her was Barbara Schomberg, who has been attending the National Convention of Stenographers in the same city. 15 Ruth Hemker and Janice Horstman are private secretaries to the President of the AF of L and the Treasurer of the CIO, respectively. Dean Waldenberger, who is the Supervising Ranger of Colorado, has employed Doris Wehrenberg as his secretary. Two of our former classmates, Carol Rowe, and Mrs. Leif Marking, and Arlene Schnick, now Mr s. Robert Christopher son, are discussing the latestmethods ofpreserving food through radio-ac -tivity. Many of the boys of the class of 1 954 have become famous. For writing the prize-winning sports story in the CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE, Ken Carlson has received nation-wide acclaim as a top-notch journalist in sports. Robert Indahl, who has been a mechanic since he graduated, has brought himself fame and fortune by perfecting a new sports car. Of course, almost everyone in the country has heard of Robert Nuttleman, the inventor of three dimensional television. Last to arrive is Karl Haverly, who receives a tremendous ovation from all as he enters, for he has just finished pitching a no hit-no run game for the Dodgers. All too soon the evening draws to a close. As a finale, Miller's Hep Cats play our class song, written to the tune of The Mission of St. Augustine .
