Hnm-......-............-H..............-..rm............nu--....... ..........El CFHE TEAM p nunmlunununrnannnnunnunnuunnnunuuuuuunluuunuunnmuunnInAnuanulnnnnnuunnnun sul 1u1unnnnunnununnannumnmun Pop Row Standing Albert Splltgerber fCoachl Lester Drogseth Raymond Hoxer Earl Havens Herbert Wemgarten tbuslness managerl Front Row Seated Yale Naset Clifford M1Ch6lNOH Tad Dax 1Capta1nj Harold Oaks Flllmore Storandt The llass of 1929 ln Athletics Durmg the fall of 1925 there was enrolled m the Freshman class a group of lo boys of xarlous SIZE and dimensions First lmpresslons were that thex were not xerx good athletlc prospects, but time perslstence and cooperatlon brought about sexeral surprxslng changes When the first call for basketball was lssued S01'T1et1I119 durlng the latter pal of October, the Freshmen boxs were asked to report so that thex basketball and gam the necessarx experience to take part 1n the game Onlx three boxs reported during the first month namelx Tad Dax, Harold Oaks and Clifford Nhchelson Later on Raxmond Hox er -Xlfred Nledfeldt and Henrx He1de1 reported occaslonallx We did not expect anx of these boxs to be stars the fir t xear but thex gaxe promise of belng future Stars on West Salem basketball teams During the sprmg of 1926 track was inaugurated a a port for the first time in sexeral xear The Fre h men tried but of course were unable to wxn anx place from the older and more experienced upper clas men One of the the class, from school Tl'l8 Class themselx es Sophomore regular position as forward on the basketball team and plaxed good ball helpmg ln making 19261927 a verv successful eason On this same team, Oaks and Mlchelson were substltutes Durmg the track season, Day, Oaks and Mlchelson were the outstandmg performers m the class Dax took part ln the pole xault and hlgh Jump, Oaks m the pole xault and Michelson IH the best athletlc prospects ln Carl Haxerlx wlthdrew during the school vear of 1929 began to assert ln athletlcs durlng the1r xear Tad Dax won a feldt also were out for track The basketball season of 1927 1928 had three members of the class of 1929 help to make it a xerx successful one Dax wa regular forward Oaks won the runmng guard berth and 'Vhchelson would have been a letter winner if an 1nJurx had not kept him out of the game Thls team took part m the Sparta tournament Michelson was the outstandmg point winner in track, placing in both the 440 and 220 at the Coulee Confer ence meet and the La Crosse district meet Nledfeldt was the be t mller of the conference meet and also placed at Ia Cros e Helder ran the mile and Dax took part ln the pole vault and high Jump, Hoxer was out for the hlgh Jump Johnson ran the half m1le Wxth three letter men back for the 1978 1929 basketball season prospects for a successful team were rather brlght On this team were fixe mem bers of the class of 1929 Dax, Oaks, 'Vhchelson regulars, while Hoxer and Nledfeldt were subs Due to certam clrcumstances such as breaks of the games, lllness, etc, the team was a disappointment wln nmg but three out of 12 games It can be said howex er that 1n the realm of sport, a team of which a great deal failure Attention at present IS turned to track 1n whlch the class of 1929 should plax a promment part Michelson and Nledfeldt should be conference cham plon IH the 440 and mlle Johnson will be among the leaders in the half rmle Hoxer will be 1n the high Jump and dl cus wh1le Dax and Oaks will also be fightmg for places on this team We hope that athletics have bene fitted all these box not only phx slcal lx but m other respect Athletlcs encourage team plax cooperation build up sport man hm and bring out mfmx other manlx qualities so essen tl il 1n life , , . . WEST SALEM 6 HOLMEN 7 In the Hrst Coulee Conference game of the season, West Salem was nosed out by Holmen High 7 to 6 at Holmen December 7th The game was very close and hard fought throughout all four periods Salem took a three pomt lead at the start of the game and the first quarter ended 3 to 0 in favor of Salem The half ended Wlth Salem 1n the lead by a score of 4 to 2 Shortly after the start of the third quarter Holmen tied the score w1th a field goal which knotted the score 4 all Both teams were gxvmg all they had now ln order to get the lead, and Holmen finally got the break by add mg a free throw and shortly after a field goal wh1ch left the score 7 to 4 m favor of Holmen In a desperate last minute rally Salem dropped a long field goal but was unable to score agam before the gun went off with the score 7 to 6 m favor of Hol men West Salem 12 Holmen 21 Holmen agam succeeded ln defeat 1ng us on our home floor by a score of 21 to 12 The game was much closer than the score 1nd1cated Holmen made most of 1ts po1nts w1th a barrage of long shots from mld floor nearly all of wh1ch found the hoop Salem took the lead at the outset and were ahead at the end of the first quarter by a score of 5 to 1 At the start of the second quarter Holmen came back strong and led at the half by 8 to 7 During the thlrd quarter Salem was unable to score and Hol men took the opportun1tv and bom barded the basket of which practically all were true In the last quarter Salem made a desperate rally to whlttle down the lead but only suc ceeded 1n addmg 4 pomts before the game ended leavmg the final score Holmen 21 Salem 12 Galesvxlle 26 West Salem 20 Galesvllle defeated Salem m one of the hardest fought games of the season by a score of 26 to 20 'Ihe outcome of the game was 1n doubt until three of Salems regulars were put out on account of fouls Both teams executed very good offensive plays wh1ch netted a number of close m shots Tl e lead changed repeatedly throughout the entlre game 'lhe score at the end of the first quarter was a to o and the half 14 to 13 m favor of Galesulle The end of the tmrd period found the score knotted 17 to 17 and then Salem dropped ln a field goal and Galesnlle annexed a free throw At this po1nt Salem started to lose men and the Galesulle five took ads antage of thu and scored R pomt ln the closing minutes of plax leaxxng the core 26 to 20 ln Galesxille favor BASKET 'BALL Fmal Standing of Coulee Lonference Won Lost Onalaska Galesville Holmen Bangor West Salem Mmdoro The tie was plated off in favor Onalaska Galesvllle 19 West Salem 8 West Salem ended 1ts season w1th a defeat handed to them by the Gale qulntet by a score of 19 to 8 The game started up w1th nelther team scormg but then Gale dropped m three baskets 1n qulck succession Salem had a gift shot wh1ch left the score at the first quarter Gale 6 Salem 1 The half ended by Gale dropplng ln 2 more field goals leavmg the score 10 to 2 in favor of Gale The thlrd quarter both teams battled on even terms but at the last quarter Gale gave a great spurt of speed to add 9 more pomts leaving the final score 19 to 8 Onalaska 16 West Salem 10 On Dec 17 present1ng a strong offensive attack and an axrtlght de fense the Onalaska h1gh school qum tet turned back the local h1gh 16 to 10 1n the first Coulee Conference basket ball game at the h1gh school gym Onalaska took the lead from the begmn1ng and were ahead 8 to 4 at the half They also ma1nta1ned their lead 1n the second period but ln the final mmutes of play Salem rallied to brlng the count up to 10 14 only to have their hopes immediately d1s ip ated when Onalaska dropped another field goal to complete the scormg for the game I l x I Arnold Schmldt Cheer Leader l o Onalaska 22 West Salem 11 On Feb 7 West Salem met Onalaska on the latters floor There was a great deal of fumbl1ng probably be cause of the low temperature of the bu1ld1ng Onalaska commltted manv fouls while West Salem mxssed multitude of chances to score on free throws leaving the final score 22 to 11 m favor of Onalaska West Salem 18 Y M C A Swastlcas 12 The first two games thls year were non conference games The first was played Wlth Y MCA Swastlcas on November 22 1n wh1ch both teams showed a lack of experience The final score was 18 to 12 ln favor of West Salem West Salem 11 LCY S 9 On November 27 West Salem met La Crosse Vocatlonal School ln a closely contested basket ball game West Salem h1gh school nosed out the LCVS qumtet 11 to 9 Both of the non conference games were play ed on the local floor Bangor 26 West Salem 14 Salem took the lead at the outset of the game by two free throws but Bangor soon came back to lead by one pomt Salem agam ga1ned the lead but the quarter ended w1th Bangor leadmg 7 to 4 Durlng the second quarter Salem scored a slngle free throw whlle Bangor looped three free throws and two field goals wh1ch brought the count to 14 to 5 In the third quarter Salem stroxe desperately to regain the lost ground but could only make three pomts to Bangors elght and the count was wldened to 21 to 8 In a Hnal rally m the last quarter Salem tallled sw pomts to Bangors five which totalled the final count in Bangor s favor 14 26 West Salem lm Mmdoro 0 West Salem defeated Mmdoro 15 to 0 to wm their onlx conference game of the season Mans fouls were com mitted on both 1des each team losm two men on personal fouls Salem took the lead w1th a free throw and were ahead at the end of the first quarter 4 2 Mmdoro soon exened the count with a palr of free throws and before the end of the half dropped m a field goal to lead 6 to 4 In the thlrd quarter Salem rolled in 4 pomts while 'VImdoro was held scoreles In the lflst quarter Salem opened up w1th a rush and scored 4 pomts to Nlmdoro
