short busmess meetmg socxal games and a lunch made up the program There were no addresses and the evenlng passed quxckly m a serles of d1vers1ons arranged by the entertamment com mlttee Sandwlches plckles cake and coffee all ID abundance were served by Mrs Cappers commlttee The meetmg opened w1th the mtro ductlon of the four new teachers Thrs was made wxth as l1ttle embarassment as posslble Mlss NCFISOH, MISS Lange M1ss Ivey and MISS Krahenbuhl, each were called by Mr Peters He men tloned brlefly the grade or department under thexr charge and gave an 1nv1 tatlon to parents to meet them 1n thelr class rooms The secretary read the mmutes of the last meetmg and the presldent called for the nommatlon and electlon of new officers To expedlte matters and actlng on a suggestlon from the floor G W Dudley, Mrs Angus John son and Mrs J R Capper were named as a nommatmg commlttee Thelr re port was accepted and a motion car r1ed to cast the unanlmous vote of the meetmg for the followlng Presldent Mrs John Meyer 1st Vlce Pres F F Mlller 2nd V1ce Pres Lorna Tofson Secretary Cora Grlswold Treasurer Meta Baer Wlule the nomlnatlng commlttee was out Mr Rowe actmg as master of ceremonies started the program of entertamment wh1ch began wlth a grand march Partners were chosen by drawmg slxps from a box Ladies drew sllps bearlng the name of a capxtal cltv and men the names of states The state and lts capltal palred off Need less to say the commlttee had a geo graphs on hand and open to a page bearmg a U S map The next ll1VEl'Sl0Xl was a ball pass mg contest ln whlch every one arrang ed ln three large cxrcles partlclpated 'Vlrs T A Schelxan won the prlze The next contest was an egg fan mng contest Carl Drecktrah Al Cull man John Mexer and Jes e Capper corners of the gym blown out egg shell egg It was dlrected 1n the center of the started from the w1th a fan and a By fannmg the1r to a small clrcle floor Amld great excltement Capper and Meyer flnlshed 1n a dead heat On the run off Meyer won and was award ed a clgar The next was a guessmg contest Placards bearlng an arrangement of letters taken from the names of 50 busmess men were posted around the walls The game was to guess the names and record them on a sheet Mr Splltgerber and Margaret Knudson won the lemon drops The last was a spellmg bee wlth a thrust, wmk bow stamp and left handed gesture to represent the letters spellers were chosen by G W Dudley and B A Mau They were all good on spelllng but thelr co ordlnatlon of words and gestures tended to break down Mrs Edward Nuttelman won the box of candy and MISS Lound de serves honorable mentlon Thls con cluded the entertalnment and was followed by refreshment Second Parent Teachers Meetmg Tuesday evenlng a hundred or more people turned out for the second meet lng of the Parent Teachers ASSOCIH t1on at the Hrgh School The meetlng began w1th the readlng of the mmutes and the suggestlon by the chalrman that a presldent be elected as the one elected at the for mer meetmg decl1ned to serve A program of ITIUSIC and speaklng followed For the first number the Hlgh School Glee Club sang two very pleasing songs Dr W J Mlller deputy offxcer of the State Board of Health was next lntroduced and spoke for forty mm utes on the work of the State Board of Health and more partlcularly of the Toxm Ant1Tox1n lnoculatlon whlch the Board ls promotmg Group mocul atlon of chlldren ln thls CODIIYIUHIIY agalnst dxphtherla was the object of Dr Mlllers usxt and talk Hxs re marks recexved close attentlon and were followed bx some questlons and 1l1Cl1sSl0n A resolutlon askxng the local school board to promote a plan for group lnoculatlon of chlldren 1n thls communxty wlth Toxm Antl Toxm recened a faxorable vote bw those present The question of electlng an aSSOC13 t1on president was then taken up Mrs 1' W Storandt and Mrs J R Capper were nomxnated and both decl1ned G W Garlock, last years presldent was then re elected Whlle th1s was takmg place the rostrum was arranged for the last number on the program In thxs a representatxon of a fire place wlth a whlte halred lady before lt was arranged on the rostrum The room was darkened and the stage xllummated by spot llght Wlth thls stage settlng Mlss Gladys Fox then sang Mother McCree ln a way that evoked warm and prolonged applause The three glrls MISS Fox Mlss Lexla Bechtold and Blrdxe Krucke responded wlth the song Moonlight and Roses for the last number The commlttee 1n charge of refresh ments had provlded an ample supply ThlS luncheon was served IH the Domestlc Sclence room Third Parent Teachers Meetmg The thlrd number of the P T A was held at the hlgh school Frldav evening Aprll 19 Mrs Blanche Cham berlln of La Crosse gave a verv Inter estlng lllustrated lecture on her trip to the Hawanan Islands Showmg slldes as she talked Mrs Chamberhn acqualnted the audlence w1th her trlp across the water some of the scenic spots of the Islands people customs bulldmgs and lndustrles Everyone en Joy ed the lecture very much and gaxn ed conslderable knowledge concerning thus lsland POSSESSIOH of ours After the lecture Mr Nlchols talked on the band movement 1n thls school and explalned the plans for golng to the State Tournament at Stenens Pomt May 17 and 18 The parents were asked to C0l'l'slLl8l the proposltlon and have the chlldren brlng back thelr sentiments at the next band praetlce das After tlmshlng th1s matter the senlor class parents met ln the Ag room to have thelr plctures taken for the Orange and Black Revlew whlch ha been dedlcated to them thls year The plcture turned out ln fine shape and w1ll make an excellent cut Thxs was followed by a fine lunch sers ed by the refreshment commlttee The Sen lor Class mothers then met for the purpose of dxscusslng WEST SALEM 6 HOLMEN 7 In the Hrst Coulee Conference game of the season, West Salem was nosed out by Holmen High 7 to 6 at Holmen December 7th The game was very close and hard fought throughout all four periods Salem took a three pomt lead at the start of the game and the first quarter ended 3 to 0 in favor of Salem The half ended Wlth Salem 1n the lead by a score of 4 to 2 Shortly after the start of the third quarter Holmen tied the score w1th a field goal which knotted the score 4 all Both teams were gxvmg all they had now ln order to get the lead, and Holmen finally got the break by add mg a free throw and shortly after a field goal wh1ch left the score 7 to 4 m favor of Holmen In a desperate last minute rally Salem dropped a long field goal but was unable to score agam before the gun went off with the score 7 to 6 m favor of Hol men West Salem 12 Holmen 21 Holmen agam succeeded ln defeat 1ng us on our home floor by a score of 21 to 12 The game was much closer than the score 1nd1cated Holmen made most of 1ts po1nts w1th a barrage of long shots from mld floor nearly all of wh1ch found the hoop Salem took the lead at the outset and were ahead at the end of the first quarter by a score of 5 to 1 At the start of the second quarter Holmen came back strong and led at the half by 8 to 7 During the thlrd quarter Salem was unable to score and Hol men took the opportun1tv and bom barded the basket of which practically all were true In the last quarter Salem made a desperate rally to whlttle down the lead but only suc ceeded 1n addmg 4 pomts before the game ended leavmg the final score Holmen 21 Salem 12 Galesvxlle 26 West Salem 20 Galesvllle defeated Salem m one of the hardest fought games of the season by a score of 26 to 20 'Ihe outcome of the game was 1n doubt until three of Salems regulars were put out on account of fouls Both teams executed very good offensive plays wh1ch netted a number of close m shots Tl e lead changed repeatedly throughout the entlre game 'lhe score at the end of the first quarter was a to o and the half 14 to 13 m favor of Galesulle The end of the tmrd period found the score knotted 17 to 17 and then Salem dropped ln a field goal and Galesnlle annexed a free throw At this po1nt Salem started to lose men and the Galesulle five took ads antage of thu and scored R pomt ln the closing minutes of plax Galesvllle 19 West Salem 8 West Salem ended 1ts season w1th a defeat handed to them by the Gale qulntet by a score of 19 to 8 The game started up w1th nelther team scormg but then Gale dropped m three baskets 1n qulck succession Salem had a gift shot wh1ch left the score at the first quarter Gale 6 Salem 1 The half ended by Gale dropplng ln 2 more field goals leavmg the score 10 to 2 in favor of Gale The thlrd quarter both teams battled on even terms but at the last quarter Gale gave a great spurt of speed to add 9 more pomts leaving the final score 19 to 8 Onalaska 16 West Salem 10 On Dec 17 present1ng a strong offensive attack and an axrtlght de fense the Onalaska h1gh school qum tet turned back the local h1gh 16 to 10 1n the first Coulee Conference basket ball game at the h1gh school gym Onalaska took the lead from the begmn1ng and were ahead 8 to 4 at the half They also ma1nta1ned their lead 1n the second period but ln the final mmutes of play Salem rallied to brlng the count up to 10 14 only to have their hopes immediately d1s ip ated when Onalaska dropped another field goal to complete the scormg for the game I l x I Arnold Schmldt Cheer Leader l o Onalaska 22 West Salem 11 On Feb 7 West Salem met Onalaska on the latters floor There was a great deal of fumbl1ng probably be cause of the low temperature of the bu1ld1ng Onalaska commltted manv fouls while West Salem mxssed multitude of chances to score on free throws leaving the final score 22 to 11 m favor of Onalaska West Salem 18 Y M C A Swastlcas 12 The first two games thls year were non conference games The first was played Wlth Y MCA Swastlcas on November 22 1n wh1ch both teams showed a lack of experience The final score was 18 to 12 ln favor of West Salem West Salem 11 LCY S 9 On November 27 West Salem met La Crosse Vocatlonal School ln a closely contested basket ball game West Salem h1gh school nosed out the LCVS qumtet 11 to 9 Both of the non conference games were play ed on the local floor Bangor 26 West Salem 14 Salem took the lead at the outset of the game by two free throws but Bangor soon came back to lead by one pomt Salem agam ga1ned the lead but the quarter ended w1th Bangor leadmg 7 to 4 Durlng the second quarter Salem scored a slngle free throw whlle Bangor looped three free throws and two field goals wh1ch brought the count to 14 to 5 In the third quarter Salem stroxe desperately to regain the lost ground but could only make three pomts to Bangors elght and the count was wldened to 21 to 8 In a Hnal rally m the last quarter Salem tallled sw pomts to Bangors five which totalled the final count in Bangor s favor 14 26 West Salem lm Mmdoro 0 West Salem defeated Mmdoro 15 to 0 to wm their onlx conference game of the season Mans fouls were com mitted on both 1des each team losm two men on personal fouls Salem took the lead w1th a free throw and were ahead at the end of the first quarter 4 2 Mmdoro soon exened the count with a palr of free throws and before the end of the
