Displaying good team play, balance, depth, and drive, the 1953 edition of West Rutland High School football completed ono of its most successful campaigns in many years. Coach Prank Hinchey's charges coppoa three victories, tied one contest, and lost two in gaining a second place finish in the Marble Valley League♦ Two Wost Rutland players were namec to the -a11-League first eleven. They were fullback Gene Wasik, and right guard Jim Gallagner. The squad was selected by coaches and officials of the league. In the opening game of the season, superior offensive and defensive play on the part of the Alumni eleven downed the West- siders, II4. to 2. The proceeds of this contest were donated by Coach Hinchey to the Jimmy Fund Cancer Drive. Using a varied passing and running attack, tne Hincheymen scored their first win of the season by upending Fair Haven, 27 to 0, behind the passing of Joe Va carelia and tne running of . Gene Wasik, John Bianchi, and Ronnie Werchenski. Poultney High School quickly dimmed the chances of an MVL title by upsetting TrRHS, 7 to 6. Poor offensive playing, both in the backfield and line, enabled Poultney to win after a hard fight. V est Side notched its third decision with an impressive 26 to 0 triumph over Hidelebury. Sharp passing, hard running and great line play paved the way to victory. A tie with Woodstock erased practically all hopes for a • m'. y. ' ' ■• •• title. After trailing 7 to 0 at the half, KRHS scored in ine third, period, converted the extra point and tied, 7 to 7 In the final game of the season.
