The Class of 1988, and the many Westie graduates who have gone before us, will always appreciate the support, understanding and help we could count on from Mr. Harris. Ever since WRHS first opened its doors in 1976, Mr. Harris was there for us; first in the capacity of teacher, coach and housemaster, and then as Assistant Headmaster. Ms. Linda Nanos joins Mr. Harris at the Shaw with the title of director of instruction. To go from many years as senior class adviser to working with little sixth graders must be quite a change for this former Spanish teacher. Mr. Gerald Anderson has left the school system to serve as a youth minister and we congratulate him on being elected to serve on the Boston School Committee representing the Dorchester-Mattapan area. The Phys. Ed. Department has lost Ms. Carolyn Cohen who has taken the post of athletic coordinator of Madison and Tech.; and Ms. Leslie Crutchfield abandoned us in November of our senior year to accept the position of guidance counselor at South Boston High. Ms. Susan Patterson and Ms. Patricia Thaxton are now teaching at English High School and Jeremiah E. Burke respectively. Their pres¬ ence as well as their worthwhile home economics programs will be missed. Donald Pellegrini We can determine excellence in more than one way. However, in our quest for excellence, we sometimes lose sight of the fact that there are different sets of objectives upon which to judge excellence. Certainly an excellent brain surgeon is evaluated by criteria very different from those of an excellent auto mechanic. None-the-less, each has achieved an optimum status within a select group. Thus, in order not to exclude any individuals or groups from the ranks of excellence, we must not focus on only a single set of objectives which would be reserved for a select group; we must incorporate many and varied criteria in judging excellence so that all individuals will have the opportunity of being judged “EXCELLENT” in their par¬ ticular endeavor. This, we have have done at West Roxbury High School. Each of you has had the opportunity to be recognized in excellence. My hope is that you will take this lesson and apply it in judging your peers, with the knowledge that we are all very different — endowed with varied strengths and interests, and each of us will seek the fulfillment of life in different ways. Whatever you choose to do must be done well, with enthusiasm and interest — YOU WILL THEN ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE!! Raiders Defeat Greater Lawrence 14-0 The Westie Raiders finished a stunning year with an equally stunning victory in the Super Bowl game at Nickerson Field on December 5, 1987. The first points of the game were scored by Galvin Leggett, who made a great 30-yard run in the 1st quarter. The score was later increased with a 2-point conversion by Roselio Fortunato. The final touchdown was made on a spectacular 35-yard pass interception by Ron Fields in the 4th Quarter. Coach Leo Sybertz was very proud of the team, and gave special praise to the de¬ fensive and special teams. “They played an ex¬ cellent game,” he proclaimed, a fact well attested by the team’s 11-0 record. Nine of the eleven victories were shutouts and the team was one in only three teams out of the 200-odd teams in Eastern Massachusetts to be undefeated. Sheron Hinds, the team’s on¬ ly senior, lost her teammates from the previous season when they all gradu¬ ated in ' 87. The new team has already developed into a competitive force and they’re looking forward to an impressive season in ' 88 with the help of outstanding ath¬ letes like Kim Huggins and other prom¬ ising players like Roxanne Greenaway and Shantae Davison. Julie Vacca and Andrea Martonova showed team lead¬ ership skills and Susan Harb is devel¬ oping into a fine player as well. Softball Team Qualifies for Tournament For the third year in a row our team made it to the State Tourna¬ ment. This feat was accomplished against all odds because our home field was undergoing reconstruction during the ’87 season. Under the able coaching of Ms. Crutchfield and Assistant Coach Mr. Sprissler, Westie won second place in Division II behind Latin School. The ’87 season ended with an out¬ standing record of 11 and 3. The younger players are the nu¬ cleus for the ’88 season. This year’s league record was 10 and 2. The spring 1987 season was led by the hitting of Brian Laws (.444 B.A.), Dexter Gibbs (.404 B.A.), and Mike Wiggins (.388 B.A.). The clutch pitching of Wiggins and Gibbs was a tremendous asset. It was a great season with an 11 and 4 record. Other returning players who contrib¬ uted to the team’s success were Gary Conway, Wally Laws, Mark An¬ derson, and Mike Turrilli. Ill | Government Study Trips Close-Up is a program that is offered to students in high school who are interested in the way government operates. Close-Up offers students an opportunity to participate in seminars which are designed to increase the younger generation’s awareness in gov¬ ernment. It also provides sight-seeing tours and workshops where students from different parts of the country come to express concerns that are national and international. Fortunately, the trip is funded in part by the Bank of New England, a very important supporter of education here at West Roxbury High.
