It’s the memories of friends and the days spent together, To us that is something that we’ll always treasure. We’ve been through some good times, some pain and some sorrow, but we were friends yesterday, today, and tomorrow. We’ll think about Westie every once in a while, these memories will leave us with joys, tears and smiles. We’ll always remember times spent with friends; A memory that lives on long after journey’s end MS y. f J , i 7(Jay 7{Je Tifene ' by AnnMarie Walsh Portia Byard West Roxbury High School’s Class of 1987 is proud to dedicate our yearbook to our guidance counselor, Mrs. Portia Byard, who has retired this year after many years of service in the Boston Public School System. Mrs. Byard joined the staff at Westie in 1977 after having been a home economics teacher and guidance counselor at the Jeremiah E. Burke High School. After her retirement Mrs. Byard will take a long, well-deserved vacation. Then she plans to fill her time by participating in additional ac¬ tivities in her c hurch and community. Mrs. Byard says that she will miss everyone at Westie. We know that she will certainly be missed by all of us whom she helped and en¬ couraged through our high school years. Thank you Mrs. Byard and best wishes for a happy retirement. 4 Announcing the recipients of scholarships at graduation: Mrs. Byard’s most gratifying function at W.R.H.S. Donna Bakas assisted by interviewing the coaches for information she needed to write the sports copy. Dina toiled tirelessly in planning and executing the faculty section with its new departmental format. Dina also designed and laid out most of the activities section with help from Maria Bombas. Lan lost sleep trying to decipher the hand- scrawled profile sheets until Roman came on board to help with the tedious task Lan ' s idea for including photos with each profile was not easily implemented, but she and Roman were determined to make it work Cheryl Owens laid out the entire advertising section herself with help and encouragement from senior class advisor, Ms. Nanos When Laz Michaelidis wasn ' t on a special photo assignment or cloistered in the darkroom doing emergency developing and printing, he cheerfully helped other staff members in a variety of tasks. The typing skills of Deyline Jusino and Nora Wanesberry were very useful to the entire staff. Michael did the research, layouts and copy writing for all of the special features. In addition, he lent his assistance to others as the need arose. Through it all, Michael lent an air of stability and reason He kept his head even when all about him were losing theirs. This quote from Rudyard Kipling refers mainly to the yearbook advisor, Ms. Dwyer who, after all was said and done, had to admit: This was a terrific team and it was great fun working with them Claudette Dwyer Yearbook Advisor Laz printing some last-minute shots. If you do, I venture to make the assertion that you are more fortunate than many of you realize, and that you are equipped with the tools necessary to make changes. It should be your firm resolve to do all in your power to assist in readjustments, so that you may take your places in a social order, based on the principles of democracy, which have proven themselves worthy of many generations’ honor and respect. You must meet the challenge to nurture our society which is dedicated to the cause of human liberty overflowing with the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This task will not be easy; thus, I ask God’s blessings and assistance in your future. 31 SENIORS Michael D. McClary President Marco Cenafils Vice President Donna A. The Raiders were paced by a destructive defense that successfully shut out five of its opponents. Westie’s “Zero D” was led by linebackers Rodney Corbitt and Louis Smith, defensive end George Combs and Raiderback Michael McClary. While the “Zero D“ was recording shutouts, the Raider offense was busy overwhelming defenses. With Dennis Wornum and Michael O’Brien leading an offensive line that averaged a hulk¬ ing 6’2”, 265 pounds, runningbacks Fred Coleman and Lorenzo Thompson found it easy to put points on the scoreboard. At the same time, the trio of Jerome Hall, Marco Cenafils and David Valle formed a devastating receiving corps. The highlight of the year was the last game of the season. The Raiders clashed with league rival Hyde Park High for the city championship. The Raiders came out on top with a 12-6 victory and the bragging rights to the city. They gave it their all trying to finish with a winning season, but ended with a respectable record of 7-7. Two exceptionally good players were Ron Durocher and Rolando Espinal. They were both selected for the American Soccer Am¬ bassadors All-Star Team. Captain Ron Durocher is one of the four members of the class of 1987 leaving the team this year along with Lazarus Michaelidis, James Takoulas and Dimitrios Loukos.
