I A . . . Westie We, the class of 1984, are proud to have been part of this great and not soon to be forgotten school. We shall remember it for its understanding and patient teachers who helped us to move forward, who aided us in expanding our wisdom. Also we will remember the calm atmosphere upheld by sincere students who came here to learn. It was a great experience we want to remember and speak of in the years to come. 3 I 4 AMMNfe 5 Headmaster’s Message to the Class of 1984 Donald Pellegrini I wish to offer my congratulations and best wishes to all of you — the class of 84 — and also assure you that your presence at W.R.H.S. will be missed next year, for you truly made our school a better place. You must, however, move on and begin to experience all that our society has to offer; unfortunately, in some cases, this may be very little. Therefore, I do ask that each one of you utilize, nurture, and take advantage of every talent and ability you possess so that your life and that of your neighbor will be fulfilled and enriched by your ef¬ forts. Take care of yourself and your family first, but do not forget to extend yourself to your fellow man. 6 Ms. B The Class of 1984 affectionately dedicates this yearbook to our dear friend and gentle but firm adviser, Mrs. Bernice Butler. They did it by shutting out the Nan¬ tucket High Whalers for the first time since 1977 before 3000 spec¬ tators at BU’s Nickerson Field. “This was a great day for us and also for our parents, our families. West Roxbury and the entire city of Boston,” said West Roxbury coach Leo Sybertz. “This is the first time I’ve seen my halfback Richard Perry get caught from behind in the backfield,” said Nantucket coach Vito Capizzo. “West Roxbury had tremendous speed. Their linebackers hurt us a lot. We were surprised at that. We really didn’t expect that much speed.” After the Westie defense stopped Nantucket on their first possession, their offense quickly drew blood. From their own 27, the Raiders took eight plays to move 73 yards for their first score. The key plays of the drive were a 34-yard pass from Drayton to split end Patton, a pass interference which put the ball on the 5 yard line and a ramble up the middle by Gardner for the score. A conversion pass from Drayton to John Hall made it 8-0. In the second half, Westie scored again when Drayton dropped a perfect pass to wide open John Hall who went into the end zone un¬ touched on a 34 yard play. The at¬ tempt at a two point conversion failed. But the Raiders led 14-0 and went on to victory. The locker room after the game was total madness with the players screaming “Leo, Leo, Leo, Leo,” for Coach Sybertz. A day to remember. ' Nantucket .. 0 65 A Thrill of Victory for Westies Girls Track Girls track team tops state meet By Darrelle Boyd Friday night, Feb. 10 West Roxbury High Girls Track Team ran the state meet. The girls went in with high hopes of winning this meet though they were favored no more than fourth. The six girls ran their hearts out placing top six to bring home five of our six possible medals and a gold medal in the 4x440 relay setting the state record in this event with a time of three minutes fifty seven seconds flat. Genesia Eddins won a gold medal in the 300 and gained another record for Westie with a time of 35:3.00. Darrelle Boyd was second in the mile run, Donna Bogues second in the 600 yard run, Charlene Byrd third in the two mile run and Donique Dean, sixth in the 100 yard run. The state winning relay was Donique Dean, Donna Bogues, Darrelle Boyd and Genesia Eddins. At the end of the meet most of the team had gone home thinking the girls placed second to Swampscott seeing how the score was so close. The girls were very much surprised to find out they had won the meet by one point for the first time they had won the indoor state Championship. In 1980 a group of girls entered West Roxbury as freshmen. They joined the track and field team just for fun, they had no idea what talent they had. The first year they ran they won the City Championship both in¬ doors and outdoors. This came as a shock to everyone, even them. This was the year of 1980-81. They also won the Falmouth Invitational Novice Division and the Lawrence Relays. In their sophomore year they lost the City Cham¬ pionships both indoors and out but came back to do something no Boston Public School has done in a very long time. They won the State Championship Class C. In 1982-83 the girls team won the indoor and out¬ door City Championships and won the Class B State Championship in the spring. They went to the Falmouth Invitational and won the open division. That year the 4x110 relay won the outdoor states and set a new record. They came back and also won the New England Championships at Boston College. The girls team was not only outstanding outdoors; they were an outstanding team indoors also. They did not win the City Championship the follow¬ ing year, 1983-84 indoors but won the indoor state championship meet. They tied for third in the state coaches relays that year and set two records, the 4x220, Charlene Byrd, Donna Bogues, Donna Jules and Genesia Eddins (1.47.9) and the 4x440; Donique Dean, Donna Bogues, Darrelle Boyd and Genesia Ed¬ dins (3.57.1). Though spring track of 1984 will not be printed in this year’s yearbook, we wish the track team luck in the spring season. We have extreme confidence in them in the state and city meets and are sure they will bring home yet another victory.
