West Roxbury High School Boston, MA 02132 1979 J._ ife People and Places The Times of Your Life Good morning yesterday, You wake up, and time has slipped away And suddenly it’s hard to find, The memories you’ve left behind Remember ... do you remember . , .? The laughter and the tears The shadows of misty yesteryears The good times and the bad you’ve seen And all the others in between Remember ... do you remember the times of your life? Reach back for the joy and the sorrow Put them away in your mind For memories are times that you borrow, To spend when you get to tomorrow! Here comes the setting sun The seasons, are passing one by one So gather moments while you may Collect the dreams you dream today, Remember . . . will you remember . . . The times of your life, of your life, of your life. Paul Anka We the Senior Class of 1979 dedicate our Yearbook to Mr. Donald Burgess, our former Headmaster. Most of us have known him for all our four years in high school, first at Roslindale High and then here at West Roxbury High. We will remember him and all that he has done in his years as Headmaster. We wish him luck in the future and in his post of District III Area Superinten dent. CO a. o One more brief announcement. 1975-1976 Freshmen at Rossie 8 Say what? Thus, we could assume that West Roxbury High School as yet has not established a tradition of its own. However, such is not the case. Through the hard work, spirit, and determination that you, the Class of 1979 have exhibited in the last three years, West Roxbury High School indeed has already developed a proud and unique character that makes us a credit to the entire City of Boston. Of course, you and I know that this has not been an easy task. History will record that you attended West Roxbury High School during the most difficult time in Boston’s School History. You endured the changes, the uncertainties, and at times the turmoil. Not only did you endure, but you learned, succeeded, and created a better atmosphere for us all. That you succeeded is a credit to your parents, your teachers, and most importantly, you. You have provided the leadership and have laid the foundation of a proud tradition for all the future graduates of West Roxbury High School. So it is with a deep sense of gratitude and honor that I congratulate you and thank you, the Class of 1979. 12 Senior class officers Traci Overton, Vice President; Georgia Tsiakalis, Vice President; James Larkin, President; Cheryl Fisher, Secretary. Perhaps, the often quoted dictum of Charles Dickens best describes our four years, for they were, at least for us, “the best of times and the worst of times.’’ A feeling of growing up was characteristic of us all. The first time that we actually looked forward to returning to school in September was in 1975, when our class would be entering the ninth grade at Roslindale High School and we were impatiently waiting to receive our programs and to go to our classes and see some of our friends. Under the court order, new school district lines were drawn. These lines sent many of our classmates to different schools throughout the city. Some were assigned to Jamaica Plain High, others to Hyde Park and a few to Roslindale High. We were eagerly expecting the opening of the school in order to meet the many students that would become our classmates. School time. As June approached and we were looking forward to our summer vacation, we found out that Roslindale High would be closed, and we would be attending a new building being constructed off the V.F.W. Parkway, to be called West Roxbury High. For our sophomore year we attended W.R. High School. Everyone was happy to be in this new school which had cost the city $21,000,000. When we first arrived we could not believe our eyes. It was a large structure with new and modern facilities Use your own microphone, Mr. Wall. including escalators and elevators, an Olympic size swimming pool, a large and beautiful library, new fully equipped science labs, new furniture, wall-to-wall carpeting, air conditioning and football field and tennis courts, as well as a beautiful 500 seat auditorium! We must state here that besides all of the new and exciting features of W.R.H.S. we did miss the old Roslindale High because it had a certain warmness, an “intimate personality” that is lacking in the W.R.H.S. due to its structure perhaps. The cemetery on the one side and the dump on the other that surround our new school are perhaps indicative of the “feeling” of the planners as to what a modern school ought to be! We saw many new teachers and the absence of several “old” teachers was deeply felt. In spite of this fact life has to go on and although we missed our old friends, we came to know the new stu dents and create new relationships. It was in October of 1976 that the Governor Dukakis visited W.R.H.S. Oct. 1976. Governor of the Commonwealth, Michael Dukakis, officially visited our school. The Greek Club prepared a reception in the library in his honor. Channel 2 accompanied the Governor and filmed the event. That night we saw ourselves on television. In April, the school sponsored the first “Career Exploration Day.” A 104 Career Day. number of industries, services and companies sent representatives ta W.R.H.S. It was a well planned and well organized project. Many of us caught a glimp se of what there is available as we are considering our future plans. Before we even knew it, final examinations time had arrived and with it the summer vacation. Since we were busy trying to adjust to our new school, we did not realize how rapidly time had passed. We were now entering our junior year. This realization brought with it a number of fears and hesitations, for we were reaching the point in our education and in our lives whefe we had to start making decisions about our future. What were we going to do in life? Were we gding to work, or to college? If to college, what would we study? We Our Gong show. had to fill out papers and applications for junior achievements and PSAT’s. We started looking in college catalogues and thinking about summer employment. It was our luck that the bus drivers went on strike on two different occasions, thus giving us an unexpected vacation. We also received an unexpected New Year’s present of three weeks vacation due to the record breaking blizzard of ’78. Ordinarily we would have rejoiced because of these days off from school, but now we were becoming concerned over the education that we were missing, especially those of us with college goals in mind. It was during this year that we years to come will serve as a reminder of the years of student life. The class of 1979 saw its soccer team to victory when it won the city championship. The operation of our Guidance Department was presented on an excellent T.V. show on WNAC. Some of our students were interviewed. We also experienced a great loss when one of our 1:45 School is over. experimented for the first time with a six-perio d day and with a double period gym. Our senior year was the year that made us feel more important as we were at the end of our public school education. Many of us celebrated our 18th birthdays. We said good-bye to our childhoods and commenced our adulthoods. It was an awesome feeling! This year was full of activities. There-were the formidable SAT’s to be taken and the decision making task as to what job or what college to apply to. Filling our those applications, financial aid forms, writing resumes and attending interviews occupied part of our time. Then there was picture taking and the preparation of the Yearbook, which in the Trophy case at Rossi. 105 Eat your heart out Mr. Sybertz. fellow students lost his life, drowning in the Charles River. We witnessed the promotion of our headmaster to Community Superintendent and the appointment of Mr. Donald Pellegrini as our new headmaster. But what dominates our memories are two events that have left permanent impressions. One of these was the senior prom and the other the ceremony itself. The Prom was indescribable. A happy mood prevailed everywhere. Boys and girls dressed formally and were smiling to everyone. The mood was catchy and even the faculty had a jubilant disposition. Rumor had it that W. Roxbury had more substitute teachers the day after Outdoor classes. the Prom than ever before. In June we experienced our most emotional day. As we all assembled in the John Hynes Auditorium our hearts were beating faster than normal. Flashbulbs popped. Amid the applause, we descended the stage, diploma in hand, making the leap into a different world, leaving behind a world of memories and dreams. Now we’ll set out to realize those dreams. The challenge is great, the will is there and the achievement is anticipated. Goodbye W.R. High School. Lunch time. I’ve graduated too 106 Senior Facts Darryl M.
