Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1977 volume:

gg SS W L. jm •r Memories light the corners of my mind, Misty water-colored memories Of the way we were. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind, Smiles we gave to one another For the way we were. Can it be that it was all so simple then Or has time re-written every line? If we had the chance to do it all again, Tell me would we, could we? Memories may be beautiful, and yet What’s too painful to remember, We simply choose to forget. So it’s the laughter we will remember, Whenever we remember The way we were. Marvin Hamlish 6 7 8 9 V--.;. Those of you, and that means most of you, who spent happy years at Roslindale High are, perhaps a bit sad because of the demise of beloved “Rossie”. But I suggest this: consider “Ole Rossie” as merely having assumed a new identity and that our present “Westie” is merely an extension of “Ole Rossie.” So, congratulations for being the first to receive diplomas with a new masthead. You may be unaware that you are in the forefront of a huge educational transition with change taking place everywhere. Values themselves don’t change, but the direction taken to achiev e sound values and high standards does change. A new, wide range of programs is available to pupils now, programs which your parents never anticipated. Business and industry work closely with the schools in a very healthy relationship. As a result of these changes doors are wide open ready for you to enter. Opportunities for you increase as economic, cultural, and scientific areas change and expand, and we in school are striving to keep abreast. West Roxbury High and you are part of this change. You have shown your parents, teachers, and friends that you can accept change, profit by guidance, and face a challenge with confidence. Indeed, going to school is hard work even under the best conditions. You’ve earned the diplomas you’ll receive today and I’m happy to be part of your experience. Always look up; keep worthy ambition in your hearts. Congratulations and Good Luck !!!!!!!! Donald Burgess Head Master 16 Memories September, 1974, was the month of entering Roslindale High as sophomores, of roaming through its massive structure thinking, “I’m a high school student now.” We can recall the uneasiness of that time. Busing had just gone into effect. Many former classmates were bused to English High while others went to Jamaica Plain and Hyde Park High. We had to make new friends both black and white. Some of us, black and white, resented not being allowed to attend a high school of our own choice with old friends. Our major disturbance that year was the Giant Walk-out. A large number of white students left school soon after first period. It was an act of rebellion. The students didn’t like being pawns to achieve Phase 1. As a result, Roslindale High was closed for the remainder of the day. The tense atmosphere settled down and classes became routine once again after that. As juniors, more of us started to participate in sports, class functions, and cheering our teams on to victory. It was the year when the Varsity Hockey Team made the play-offs and the football team ended its season with an average 8-2. Only two defeats. It was a year for taking college exams and receiving lower scores than expected However, many of us were thinking, ‘ There s always next year.” There was the unexpected vacation that year when the teachers went out on strike for a week. Toward the end of our junior year, several rumors were flying about, stating Roslindale High was to be closed. The rumors became official in May, 1976. Rossie High was to be closed for renovating. The future seniors were to attend the new high school being built. There were several advantages anyone could think of, but we weren’t to graduate with a Rossie High diploma. There would be no more walks to the Square or having lunch at Stevie Dee’s. Arriving at West Roxbury, September 12, 1976, in our assigned buses, we quickly forgot about Rossie and looked forward to our future in the new school. We could become excited talking about the Olympic size pool, the outside tennis courts, the football field and the gym. Of course, everyone agreed that the location of West Roxbury was not in the best area, alongside the “Dump”. Anyway, we were at West Roxbury, and being seniors brought many responsibilities and decisions to make. The first was to name the school mascot. The “Seagulls” won, but after a new election we became the “Raiders”. Our second decision was the school colors. At our disposal we had the history of the original West Roxbury High, whose were green, white, and gold. We decided to have the same, however, without the gold. Spirit was high and the football games were great in our senior year. Our annual Thanksgiving game... Hyde Park verses West Roxbury... was a treasure to remember. WE WON!!! Everyone cheered for the glorious victory. After that, everyone started to look forward to college accep¬ tances, “Highlights”, the Prom, and Graduation. The Prom couldn’t even be described. Everyone was at his or her best. We had a great time and a memorable one. “Second Society” played almost every requested song. The meal and the service at Lantana’s was excellent. The most emotional day was Class Day. Each of us realized that it would be the last time to see each other before graduation. So we wished our “Good Lucks,” “Hope you the best” and other forms of blessings. The Class of 1977 graduated on June 14, 1977, at Hynes Auditorium. It was our last day of being students and the first of becoming adults. And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the will which says to them: “Hold on!” If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings-nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it!
